Also it depends on the grind of your cam to determine what stall you need. I would go with what the manufacturer recommends. Usually on the cam card when you purchase the cam

I have to agree I got a lot of respect for young men and women getting their hands dirty. I have been a welder for thirty five years plus mechanic and electrician, I can build just about anything not to mention it takes money...

Duration helps cam performance over all. Higher duration means the valve is open longer. Les say you have a 230 duration cam, that means the valve is open 230 degrees of a 360 degree circle. Less duration less elapsed the valve is open higher duration more elapsed time valve is open. Think of it as taking short breathes while running and long deep breathes.

That makes a lot of sense when you put it that way!! Does this affect the cams sound and drivability?? And is this the factor that requires you to get a higher stall converter??

So duration will effect sound but it will be so minuscule you won’t be able to tell. Sound really come from the lsa. ( lobe separation angle) a tighter lsa like I 108 or a 105 usually tend to be more choppy and aggressive sounding and preform better in higher rpms. A wider lsa like a 112 or 115 are usually used in turbo, supercharged, or nos applications but the cams are not nearly as choppy and have a much smoother idle and drive ability. Duration will effect drive ability in a sense of you will burn more gas. More duration equals less gas mileage. Lmao but what is gas mileage :)

More duration will generally give choppier idle and lower vacuum. A Comp 268h is on the edge of OKAY with stock stall. Brake vacuum will also suffer.

When cam tells me 1850 i go 2,000 other than that always follow stall recomendations for whatever cam you install !

You may have other issues going on if you need a vacuum booster with that small of cam. You shouldn't have any problems getting close to 20" of vacuum out of that at idle

Yeah I’m thinking the old bottom end had issues I couldn’t pin point. Because someone asked me “is it pushing oil out the valve covers?” And I said no. I thought it had a little leak because I used crappy rubber gaskets. But I think back to that time and I think it was pushing it out. So there were some serious problems going on with the last set up. I know it’s unrelated but this is just an example of another skeleton in this engines closet lol. Hopefully when I tear down that bottom end I’ll see the real problem! And luckily I have a brand new one!!

that cam has a little lope, up grade to vortec heads and it will wake your truck up. I used to run 268energizer in many cars/trucks great all around cam.

Dude those Trick Flow heads will stomp Vortec heads by 25-35 hp that he is using.

I didn't see that. Looked at his other video showing heads you are right. I thought it was just stock and changing out cam. Seen many stuff a 292 cam in otherwise stock motor, springs, 2.73 gears and it was dud. No off the line.

Yeah anything can be fast it’s just definitely not fast right out the factory. I drove mine in stock form for years trust me lol. If I didn’t own one then it would be fighting words haha but I’ve been driving mine for a while I think 4 years now.

Always install new lifters on a flat tappet cam... buy the cam kit with lifters...

Highest powered 454 was 240Hp 73-86 1/2 ton 350s saw no more than 165HP/275ftlbs 87 350s were 210HP/300ftlbs By no means fast, I built a mild 350 that idles like stock, but will walk any stock 454 73-79 C10 (454 was not available in half tons after 79)

For those wondering this is basically a stock 400 rv cam. This is on a 110 lsa and the 400 rv cam is on a 107 lsa. Not much difference between the 2 cams except the stock rv cam idles a tad rougher but also chops more.

@@mikeanchondo8972 id recommend a sum-1785. .450 is the biggest you can go with stock heads and springs without any work. and the short duration tight LSA loses very little low end torque while making a huge difference in the mid range torque and picking up on the top end. i had that cam in my stock 83 350 with long tubes and an edelbrock performer rpm intake and it ran fantastic. the pickup had 3:08 gears and 33s with a 4 speed and i was still able to take off in 2nd with the cam because it still made good low end torque.

I have 112 lobe separation and get 21” vacuum so you should be fine with brakes and stuff. Duration is really the most important spec. Check out my vintage iron vids. He builds motors motors and has a very in depth video on just cam specs

I wish the future me could warn you about gas prices going to hell.... I paid over $5.00 a gallon for fuel .... Your 2.73 ratio rear end will save you gas.... I understand the awesome torque production of a 4.11 but the horrible fuel economy of it..... :)

That cam is fairly choppy, I've run it in a few 355's you will want a 22-2500 stall, it will work but trust me it wont like a 1300 stall at all, whatever you do don't use the comp red liquid cam lube, use a moly lube on the cam and lifters for break in, those xtreme grinds are very sensitive on break in so use ever precaution, i build engines for a living, i actually will not use flat tappet cams anymore, too many failiers, good luck

I ran the red comp cam break in lube on a mopar 318 with this exact same cam with the stock valve springs still in the stock heads and it survived break in perfect. In fact, we didn’t know this at the time but the intake gaskets were leaking coolant into the oil and the oil was a milkshake. It still survived just fine. Make sure you use a non detergent 30 weight oil with the camshaft break in additive and use plenty of comp cams red lube and you should have no issues.

63ImpFX4 well in a huge car like an impala with a presumably stock powerglide, stock rear end, stock stall converter, and stock 283 with stock heads then I would say keep the stock cam. You will be very disappointed when you put in a cam like the one in this video and your car idles like shit in gear, has no torque, and can’t spin a tire in dirt. But if you are looking to keep the 283, I would recommend starting out by putting a pair of 305 HO heads on it, a good aluminum 4 barrel intake, a good 600 CFM carb, and swap the powerglide out with a turbo 350. The low first gear of the turbo 350 will be a huge benefit over the powerglide no matter what the old timers will tell you.

63ImpFX4 I am running basically your same setup in my 66 Chevelle right now which is a 283 powerglide and a 3.08 rear gear but it has the 220hp version of the 283 which comes with a 4 barrel and power pack heads. I swapped the Rochester 4gc out for a Holley 600 and that was a huge advantage. I would never consider putting a bigger cam in this engine because it desperately needs the low-end torque of the stock cam, even in a light car like a Chevelle. Your impala would be even worse.

Not a good idea to reuse the old lifters. You'll do better getting new ones.
