idk if you really can count pokemon as a card game, but the analogy really does shine the light on how Pokemon Showdown's game basis might actually be the greatest of all time. If pokemon were designed with strategy as its core, it could be the single greatest game ever (and i really do mean game in general, not only one of the best video game)

yugioh got me into cards way back when. recently i've gotten back into pokemon cards with Pocket. something that always bugged me was the financial side. it feels scummy. people talk about investing in cards or sets. that side of it is like NFTs

You can also make the same argument for completive beyblade (x specify),and it's super fun You bring 3 beys,comboes(deck building different combos can make different beys do different things( execution is your launch and want order you but your beys in but also how to play into different macth up(luck it mean it beyblade there will always be luck,but it's surprisingly less there as you may think at 1st specially on the competitive level While a stadium is a bit expensive they usally come with 2 beys(3 beys in a typical deck) and the recent one has 2 very comptive beys one even on stock,the other needs parts not to hard to get ahold of

Truly Immaculate taste. Pokemon is in the running for the most beautiful battle systems ever. It always has some balancing issues, but the system itself is just art. I spent too many nights as a high schooler just cranking out Showdown games. The lack of the physical elements killed it for me though, I would rather play another game in person than queue Showdown online alone. VGC was out of the picture too, because even though you are 100% right that Showdown is as cheap as it gets, VGC is super expensive.

Good video. Definitely an interesting read on pokemon game as analogous to card games. Obviously the advantage pokemon has is that they are digital games and can be played anywhere with internet once tou have your team. They also get to add those percentage variants and changes that a physical TCG would get overloaded with of they tried to port them over. I do also think it's interesting to be able to compare the video game to the tcg. We can see what they cut and what they saved to create the card game versions. I'm forced to wonder what aspects of the game that aren't there could be ported to the tcg.

Oh there's also Exceed, that's one of my personal favourites. Pocket Paragons and Unmatched are also great. There's also a ton of games I've been meaning to play, like Sakura Arms. There's also a myriad of Smash Bros fan games ranging from reskins of other games like Coup and Pixel Tactics to fully original games like Table Smash and Smash Tactics.

Hey! Love the videos I do enjoy pokemon showdown and should maybe get back to playing it again but I don't think I'd class it as a card game To me card games are built around not having guarenteed access to all your resources. But in Pokemon if you have built your team well and you can pilot it well you are very heavily advantaged. In say magic, you can certainly be advantaged but never as much because what if you never draw your revelant cards on time I think the autobattler genre is much closer to card games for this reason. You never know for sure what you'll get access to
