Awesome advice about the EM1/2 card slots. I couldn’t fathom why my camera buffered during pro capture. Disabling the second slot solved the problem. Many thanks Joe.

Thanks for the great info well laid out. I too can’t wait for your setup with 1x. Received my 1x end of February from my local dealer. Using the mark ii as a second for sports. Very pleased, feel I've got the best of both words. The 1x buffer for writing to card is much improved.

Thanks Joe, very clarifying (as always). I got a very good value Prograde II V60 card for my em1-ii about 6 months ago and so far I am super happy with it's speed (when in slot 1 of course). I Only use it as an amateur, so toughness isn't hiper critical to me and the price of Prograde was outstanding, for what that's worth to us (your:) followers. Regards from sunny Barcelona. Spain

Worth noting a mild errata here, the E-M5 II and Pen-F are UHS-II rated. Super helpful video though!
@JosephEllisPhotographer4 жыл бұрын
Yankee Rider I’m fairly certain (confirmed with Olympus) that the EM5.2 and PenF aren’t capable of using UHSII at full speed. Now UHSII cards are backward compatible with UHSI slots albeit at the slower UHSI speeds. Is that what you mean?
@HH60gPaveHawk4 жыл бұрын
Joseph Ellis I can only comment on olympus’ own comparability tables and independent testing. Olympus’ tables list UHS-II cards cs.olympus-imaging.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/compati/media/sd/en_2015_02.cfm , and independent testing shows double write speeds from II cards www.cameramemoryspeed.com/olympus-e-m5-ii/sd-card-comparison/ . Olympus’ manual also shows the II logo in the compatible cards section just like the EM1x and 1.2
@JosephEllisPhotographer4 жыл бұрын
OK so I think this is just a case of being compatible with UHSII cards not having a slot that takes advantage of the second row of contacts. The marketing material isn’t super clear on this but compatible isn’t the same thing as better hardware. Take a look at the max write speed of the EM1.2 on the site you linked which is clearly documented everywhere as having one UHSII slot and one UHSI slot - the max write performance is double anything the EM5.2 can do. Wouldn’t you think they would be close to the same? And just to note it, you can use UHSII cards in both slots of the E-M1.2 but the camera is clearly faster when only the top slot is used. Still to your point, in the speed test link I don’t see any UHSI cards that perform like the UHSII either so that’s curious. Thanks for pointing it out.

Em1mkII has a I and II speed card slots. The write speed is determined for both cards by the slower card. When I shoot HRS 80megpixel I pop the slower SD I card and the writes are faster.to the SD II slot (as long as you have a SD II card) .

Hello Joseph, Thanks for that. You got to the dual card thing right at the end which was most useful. Whether you like it or not, you are now my go to person on the net for all things Olympus (well, you and Chris Eyrie-Walker). Having just bought the EM1-X I am keen to hear your workflow with it and how it has changed from the EM1 MkII. I'd like to know whether you now charge directly, rather than removing the batteries. I'd also be interested if you've any experience with using the camera with an iPad Pro with its new usb c connector. I've been trying to do this to get my rugby shots quickly online after (and hopefully during) a game but not found the ideal method yet. Though you might do something similar posting shots to social during a wedding day. Anyway, keep up the good work. Really glad you are gaining a wider recognition for the great content you provide.

In my Olympus SH-series pocket zooms, Apacer SDHC 1 32 GB cards served me well. That card works in my Olympus E-M10 II, but both S-AF and C-AF are much slower. The E-M10 II has a menu 6x the size of the pocket zoom menus. I got the Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB SDXC1 V30 card ( matches your description of a UHS1 card), and this gives a noticeably better AF response when re--focusing automatically with moving traffic on video. But with the higher video quality, the card filled up halfway through a day with bird videos running in my absence. My presence scares the birds. So 2 weeks ago I bought the Sandisk 128GB Extreme Pro card. Still have to test the 128GB with long videos though.

Hi Joe. Thanks for the info. A small correction about the E-M5 Mk II: apparently it not only supports UHS II in UHS I compatibility mode but it also can use the increased write speed, according to this site: www.cameramemoryspeed.com/olympus-e-m5-ii/sd-card-comparison/ I’ve personnally used the Lexar Professional 1000x UHS-ii in my camera but I haven’t really tested it other than taking a few bursts and everything got recorded just fine.

@dianakillens99994 жыл бұрын
SO Joseph, what card would you suggest for an EM 5 mark III ?
@JosephEllisPhotographer4 жыл бұрын
I would buy a UHS II card, the best prices seem to be 64GB and 128GB and that's a pretty good amount of space overkill for most people. Now if you use ProCapture a lot or shoot a lot of long sequences I would opt for the v90 card otherwise I'd save by going with the v60 version. Both are very fast and to be honest the v90 is overkill unless you're filling the camera's buffer with still images and having to wait as they write. I really like Sony cards and Hoodman cards and their SD cards come in both the v90 and v60 varieties. So to re-cap 128GB UHS II v60 is my recommendation most of the time. I hope that helps!

What does the new OMD E1 Miii require in the second slot? Thank you in advance.
@JosephEllisPhotographer4 жыл бұрын
Linda Stevenson Hi Linda, the second slot can only take advantage of the slower UHS I speed cards (single row of pins). The only OMD camera to have two of the faster UHS II slots is the EM1X.
@Roz-Inspire-Video5 жыл бұрын
I’m bombarding you on SD questions as I commented earlier on another video. On my EM1 ii best to have 2 v90s for shooting Cinema 4k video (if writing to both cards simultaneously) or does the write speed matter on video?
@JosephEllisPhotographer5 жыл бұрын
It won't matter, those high speed cards are really only taxed to their limit for things like ProCap and high speed bursts of stills. Although it's never bad to future proof yourself a little... I think the v60 cards are a steal in comparison to the v90s and give you some headroom for almost any application.

Did they quit making the XD memory card? Is there a substitute in an SD card that would fit my old Olympus C 770? Having a hard time finding the XD card, and what does it mean refurbished, found one that’s refurbished.

Some Om camera can take a micro SD to XD converter. You wont find new anymore.

There is little or no point in going to a UHS II card unless you want to have the flashiest or fastest card. I got one because I thought I'd like one, not because I needed to have one. Buy good quality cards and look at the transfer speed (write not read) when judging value.

I have an older Olympus XD Picture cards 256 to M1GB. These cards don't have any speeds written on them. They work in Olympus 50-50c or Olympus FE 2.10 cameras. Are they not good anymore? Should I discard them? Thanx. M.
@danc20147 ай бұрын
Never toss them XD cards are not made anymore. but the new OM cameras do not use them either. A old 5 Mp camera will still use them as they made a return.

Good stuff but, how can I tell how fast my camera write speed really is? I have many cameras and I do plan on buying some more (all are Olympus) but how do I know what speed to get if I don't know how fast my camera is?
@JosephEllisPhotographer5 жыл бұрын
If you’re only talking about Olympus every model except the EM1.2 and EM1X are UHS I type slots so they max out their write speeds with good UHS I, v30 cards which can get around a max of 40 mb/sec write. If you have a EM1.2 card slot one is UHS II card slot 2 is UHS I so max write speed can be much faster if you’re not using both slots. The fastest UHS II v90 cards will write at around max 150 mb/second. EM1x has two UHS II slots so you can get that fast performance writing to both cars at the same time instead of being limited by the slower slot of the EM1.2 using dual cards.

"... 10 with a circle around it..." That's not a circle, it's a letter "C" which stands for Class, so that's a Class 10 card. You should also reference Olympus' card compatibility page for the E-M1 Mark II: cs [DOT] olympus-imaging.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/compati/media/sd/en_2016_04.cfm I have had multiple card errors with Lexar 128GB UHS-II 1000x cards in both of my E-M1 Mark II bodies (which are only 2 months old). I'm not using those cards any more, and I've switched to SanDisk 64GB UHS-I Extreme cards. I'll see how that goes...

I'd flip that lock switch on my SD card if I'm plugging that into a PC lying around in a print shop because it might be infected! Lifetime means the designed lifetime of the product. Suppose the product is designed to function for 2 years, the warranty is 2 years long. For SanDisk's lifetime warranty it's for 7-10 years.

Why not use the cable from the camera to computer to download photos ?
@JosephEllisPhotographer5 жыл бұрын
Mark Frohn Well depending on your camera model it can be much slower, USB 2.0 speeds for example, your also putting extra wear on your cameras card slot and wasting some battery to power the camera during transfer. These things may or may not be a concern for you of course and if going directly from the camera works for you I’d say go for it.
