With great train heist, the benefits of it being instant speed are a lot harder to see/kinda niche, but they are massive! Some of the best extra combats decks are ones with powerful attack triggers, like narset, enlightened master, narset, enlightened exile, and velomachus lorehold; who all let you cast spells when they attack, which is an ability that leans into running extra combat and extra turns spells that will let you attack multiple times in a row to get more triggers and chain them together. While those abilities let you break timing restrictions present on the sorcery speed extra combat spells and cast them during combat, a significant portion of them say "after this main phase there is an additional combat" which makes them do nothing at all when cast at a time that isn't a main phase. Even beyond those examples, there are a number of extra combat commanders and/or enablers that will give extra combats without extra main phases, like moraug and najeela, so if you are drawing cards from attack or damage triggers and draw one of the sorcery speed extra combat spells during your moraug extra combat, you wont be able to cast that spell until the next turn, potentially losing a window for a win that this spell could give you.

2:04:34 I think an overlooked aspect of Tower Winder is that 50% of the time, Command Tower is going to come before Tower Winder in your deck’s order. So 50% of the time + the X% of the time you draw both in the same burst (such as the opening hand) mean you won’t be able to get any card advantage off of your Tower Winder. Which means most of the time it’s French vanilla. You can account for this by running effects that sacrifice land like Harrow or Gitrog. But outside of decks that can place Command Tower in the grave consistently, Tower Winder will fail to find more often than not.

I think fblthp is cool in the sense where you can plot away things you don’t want to play yet and dig through your deck. Revealing the cards too also could work as a deterrent or distraction for counters and removal so you can play other things without worrying about the interaction because they are holding it for the plotted card.

This is a really good type of video. To finish off the set with such deep analysis of cards, which are flexible and aren't straight-up commanders, really helps me to understand why I should get and play specific cards from this set. My standard way of playing is upgrading a precon from a set, where the upgrades usually come from past sets rather than the current set. This makes me feel I could have really interesting interactions if I just started playing these cards.

Final showdown is an absolutely awesome piece for white. Something that is starting to become more and more obvious is that versatility trumps lower cost in Commander, and this card is the epitome of versatility. It can be a counter to a targeted removal spell, it can be a board wipe or it can buy a full turn by shutting down an opponent. Honestly, its hard to imagine a board state where you are unhappy to have Final Showdown in your hand.

I think Lively Dirge is a really underrated card from this set. Like a lot of the other spree cards, it is versatile. It can be an entomb or a reanimate spell, or it can basically tutor a 4-cost or less creature to the battlefield for 5 mana. Being able to grab any 4 cost creature and put it on the battlefield for 5 mana is pretty good, and if you run a lot of creatures with different ETB effects, it can essentially turn into anything from removal to card draw to more niche ETB effects Edit: Forgot to mention, I got this card in my prerelease packs and played it, and it seriously put in some work even though my best target was just an Outcaster Greenblade

With Memory Vessel, you could work it with an extra turn effect so you're essentially just exile 7 cards from each player while locking them out of their interaction for a turn. It can help if you know someone has been setting up the top of their deck (Sensei's Top, scry effects, other blue shenanigans), or even if you set your top deck for the combo in hand in the following turn, and then just skip the player's chance to do another turn to build or interact. It can even give you a chance to force them to tap out for interaction with their impulse draw by bluffing, then extra turn it.

What's the interaction between [Fblthp, Lost on the Range] and [Final Showdown]? You're not able to Plot for the lower cost and then cast at the higher values, right?
@therealax69 ай бұрын
- Spree is a mandatory additional cost. You must pay at least one of the additional costs when you cast a spell with spree. - When you cast a plotted spell, you cast it from exile without paying its mana cost. Note that "its mana cost" is just the cost written on the top right corner of the card - you must still pay any additional costs (including spree costs, or any additional costs like Diabolic Intent's creature sacrifice). - Fblthp allows you to plot a card from the top of your library for its mana cost. Again, this is just the cost written on the top right corner. So, the interaction here is that you'd plot Final Showdown for {W}, and on a later turn cast it for just the additional costs for the modes you want. You don't pay for the modes in advance, and you can't use modes without paying for them.
@shadowmyst96619 ай бұрын
I put Smuggler’s Surprise in my Desert Bloom deck because all 3 modes are relevant. Self-milling gets stuff in the grave, it has plenty of high cost creatures to get value for what you cheat onto the board, and who doesn’t love protecting their creatures from most removal.

i personally think Tai Wakeen, Perfect shot is the best commander. not in the unbeatable sense, but i think its the most consistent commander for its cost, infinite draw and a finish button in 1 card. i wonder if its a commander that is socially unacceptable or turns it into a 3v1 where the player just plays their commander taii wakeen,, and the other three take turns removing it and then take that player out first. its a "youre not allowed to have nice things" type of commander
@therealax69 ай бұрын
It's only a finish button in a deck that makes infinite mana (or very large amounts of it), and at those power levels, I doubt it's playable. If you're running a Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth combo in your deck, you're probably quite close to CEDH (although not _at_ CEDH levels).
@trixmtll13939 ай бұрын
@@therealax6 it doesnt really need to go for an infinite mana or OTK to be useful. chip damage and board clearing while drawing, all of a sudden your opponent is at 14 health, you got 7 mana and a shock and play with fire in hand. you tap Tai for 5 mana. shock and play with fire end up doing 7 damage each. the math with Tai is very dangerous. opponent has to use resources to remove her, or you gain card advantage removing anything they can play you keep replaying her, and that in itself is a card advantage mechanism. the build up can be quite big with her as commander.
@Negative_NBG9 ай бұрын
I think Josh is very wrong about the reflection card. You wouldn't cut a counter spell for it, you'd replace a bounce spell or another protection spell. You don't even have to use it to stop someone else's spell you can use it to clone your own big flyer or something spicy on another person's board
@jorgegarciaroman99049 ай бұрын
Is mana cost and mana value the same thing? For plotting purposes, and how Fblthp puts it, you plot apecifically off of the cost. So if cost ≠ value than a split card might be plotted by one of the costs and not the sum of both costs. Does this sound right?
@therealax69 ай бұрын
Mana cost is the exact cost, including all the pips. Mana value is just the number. But flip cards have the combined mana _cost_ of both halves - the combined mana _value_ is just a result of the mana cost being combined. For instance, Expansion//Explosion's mana cost (while not on the stack) is {X}{U}{U}{R}{R}{U/R}{U/R} - and as a result it has a mana value of 6. (On the stack, a split card only has the characteristics of the chosen half, including mana cost.) Split cards are particularly bad with Fblthp because they have the combined mana cost while on top of your library (because they're not on the stack), so you have to pay for _both_ halves when plotting them, but you can only cast one of the halves (unless the split card has fuse, in which case you _are_ allowed to cast both halves without paying their mana cost).

The floor of the new kambal is honestly still respectable. A 2/4 for 3 is a decent rate and a decent chump blocker if you need it with the chance to ping if you incidentally make a token. If we say on average your deck makes two tokens a turn, very reasonable with stuff like Storm Kiln or Black Market Connections, that life drain helps out. And in the right deck you could be just firing off pings left, right, and center. That's all before you might snag some free mana or a spare spare creature or even getting something decently useful.

Angel of Indemnity is in the Desert precon because Deserts are permanents with mana value 4 or less that like to be put from the battlefield into the graveyard, so it can bring back Deserts. Aven Interrupter also notably doesn't have to target only spells an opponent casts, but can also let you plot your own spells, and your own plotted spell won't cost more since its 2 mana tax is only on opponents' spells. I do wish Final Showdown said "Choose target creature you control" for the second mode, just for Feather decks. Fleeting Reflection - correct me if I'm wrong, but because resolving things are done in the order they are on the card, it will give a creature hexproof, untap it, but then immediately make that creature lose hexproof if you have it become a copy of another creature? Shouldn't the giving hexproof part have been the last sentence, not the first?

Becoming a copy of a creature and gaining hexproof are two continuous effects that apply to the same permanent - they don't cancel one another. (The layers system will tell you that they're respectively layer 1 and layer 6, so the copy applies first.) This is the same as a clone entering the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter - the counter still applies a stat bonus; it's not cancelled by the copy overwriting the stats.

One of the cards that I think you missed that just makes Kambal a greater engine is Fractured Identity. Just the fact that it makes 3 tokens of any non-land permanent can make Kambal go off heavily. Heck, target your own permanent, give your opponents one while you get 3 copies. Sure it's giving your opponents 1 but you are still profiting!

Do it on a Dockside Extortionist and remember that all the triggers resolve in reverse turn order :)

Isochron Scepter with the spree cards is gonna be something I think is gonna be very popular. Return the Favor is a threat that makes it so people are really not gonna target you much.

Fleeting reflection goes in Orvar. Because it’s flexible and is another way to give me access to other people creatures. Mirage mirror is good (and will stay in the deck) but this has the up side of protecting orvar some times. But also let’s me target my creatures to copy them. Also in response to someone trying to kill orvar I can hexproof him and then target another creature to turn orvar into, copying it and protecting orvar at the same time.

Course orvar is super unique.

For Fblthp, I'm basically using it as a reverse impulse draw (a patient draw if you will) in my Saruman of the Many Colors deck. The plan is to use Fblthp as set up to be able to cast two cards in the same turn without needing all the mana at once. I'm also testing that one guy that gives spells in hand foretell along with One with the Multiverse for similar reasons. Decided against As Foretold; it looks promising but without intentionally tutoring for it early it's a feels bad draw in the mid and late game.
