Love these hooks, G Carp specialist was the first carp hook I ever got and I have never changed to a different one! For me the qualities that sold me were the thickness so I don't rip apart the carp's mouth, and the micro barb since I fish barbless and can easily push the barb down flush with the point.

It was the second cut of the ending. The first cut of this video was 28 minutes. What size hook do you think would work for sweet corn on a hair rig? Also are the European sizes different than the American sizes?
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 3 жыл бұрын
It makes no sense to put corn on hair rig. You will catch a lot less fish. Put it on the hook. #4 is perfect. Gamakatsu sizes are the same everywhere. But if you buy a european brand, like Carp Spirit or Fox or Korda.. those can vary. Fox and Korda are reliable though

Geez that side by side of the korda and gcarp gets me thinking. I have a bunch of korda fox etc hooks for carping, including gcarp though hard to find in canada. Looking over carp stuff in the uk for years you dont see the Gammy gcarp hooks, maybe they are same as korda, maybe Korea made a deal to keep gcarp hard to find over there. Anyhow, great video as always, just getting caught up on your library, just found the playlist section, real cool

I'm curious, if you use size 6 of the gamakatsu specialist hooks for boilies (I'm assuming you are using hair rigs for boilies), what bait or how are you fishing when using say size 4 and size 2 hooks?
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 2 жыл бұрын
i use size 4 in almost ever video on this channel that is not a boilie video. For me this hook is perfect for carp from 2 to 30 pounds. Size 2 i bought just to have them. There was one lake in Illinois where you could consistently catch 30 lb carp, and I got all the 30+ carp in my video from that lake, and i got them particularly for that lake, but then DNR decided to poison all the carp in that lake or someone else did, and carp suddenly vanished from the lake. So I haven't used those hooks in years now. But i have no regrets buying them at those prices as they cost much more now, and these hooks can be used for just about anything in united states

@@ifishcatfish Gammies as they are Nick named here, damn auto correct. What rig set up would you recommend for a lake with lots of weeds?
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 3 жыл бұрын
I would never fish weeds. Waste of time. People who don't like u will tell u some stupid rigs like zig-rig and pop up rigs but those rigs are stupid and people only give them to you because they hate you and want you to waste your day. Get a rod with braid so u have good sensitivity and tie a lead with no hooks or rigs. Then cast it and drag it on the bottom until you find a nice patch of bottom with no weeds and no sand and no rocks. You need clean and soft bottom. Fishing in weeds its a waste of time. Maybe you can still catch some fish here and there but i have better things to do than waste my time on that

my favorite hook is eagle claw L042 size 2. goes all the way through the jaw, turns over and a lot of times creates a second hook hold. some people don't like it because of the mouth damage.. but this is america and i am catching wild fish so i do not care. having said all of this.. i believe i will at least try the g-carp hooks.

@wespeacock793
@wespeacock793 3 жыл бұрын
Worthy of a view and a like but I'll stick cheap Eagle Claws for carp. As for big cats I do tend to run Gamakatsu octopus hooks but I always keep the door open with other brands and styles of hooks. Same goes for all available fish in my area. Most are universal really. One of my largest recent carp wasn't my target species but I reeled her in on cut carp and a 4/0 Kahle hook. I didn't see that coming but I got a good hook up and fantastic fight in heavy current. Had I been targeting carp both bait and hook as well as line would have been entirely different but good accidents happen. Time on the water matters most.

I have hooked 3 big carp but have never managed to land them. they have either come of the hook, broken my line or taken my hook and line. I will take your advice , get the right hook, increase the line size and let you know next time how I go.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 3 жыл бұрын
I am not a big fan of increasing the line size. Makes fishing nasty. 0.30mm line is enough for carp. More important than line is inspect your line at the beginning of the trip for nicks and damage from transportation or from prior trips. Then check your drag to make sure it is ready to pay line. When people say the fish broke their line it always means one of two things: 1. their line was damaged, 2. their drag was too tight. Maybe a musky can cut your line with teeth, but not carp...

Its called a spade, spaded hooks are designed for mono and do you really use 50lb braid? I use 7LB for carp up to 15LB and 12LB for anything bigger.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 2 жыл бұрын
Spade! Right! Forgot that. I use 0.30 or 0.32 mono on all my carp reels, i don't care what pound the line happens to be. For me that is the perfect diameter. I use 50 lb braid just to tie my hook. I like the softness/stiffness of 50 lb. Thinner is too soft for me. It's not like it matters how thick it is, because it is perfect green color.
