Very nice cat. We currently own an earlier version of this vessel and can testify to its awesomeness. We sail her as a young family of four and routinely do double digits conservatively. Light. Fast. Strong. Timeless. Congratulations to all that delivered this Grainger. Edit. I posted my comment before seeing any others. Tough crowd maybe. I note that it is much cheaper, classier and easier to line the inside of a boat, but it adds lots of weight. The man hours to fair one cabin can be mind blowing and comes at a cost ironically. We find it great with young kids as everything wipes off. We have a traditional cockpit/steering thus can’t comment on the forward cockpit.

Amazing design. Forward cockpit with the safety of an interior helm beats the hell out of hanging out in the back of the boat on a night passage. Finally, an improvement over sailboats that all have the same lackluster 19th Century interiors. Sail handling from the front cockpit on this cat will be a huge improvement over running forward to lower sail in bad weather. Kudos to the designers!

This is definitely a debate that will rage on but don't knock it until you sailed it. We've put 35,000 miles on a Chris White Atlantic 48 with a forward cockpit. Sailed from Newport RI, all through the Caribbean, thru the Panama Canal and across the Pacific down to NZ. We sailed in ever type of weather you can imagine. A high bridge deck, light build (not over loaded) and smart seamanship is the key. On the Chris White we have two helms. The primary helm is in the outside cockpit and we have a second helm inside. The forward cockpit is 10 feet from the edge of the boat. Incredibly safe and dry. Up wind in 20 knots true with 6 to 8 foot seas and you are wishing a splash will cool you down. The water does not make it to the cockpit. See video (not professional) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHbPfImclLacrck. Heavy weather - we've seen it. +50kts and seas as big as the boat is long. I spent 8 hours at the inside helm with complete control and totally dry. Sure, waves hit the forward windows in that storm but the cockpit was never close to filling with water. Maybe an inch or less before the scuppers flushed. In fact, access to the mast and headsail was so safe we made several sail adjustments and pushed through the front in active sailing mode. We've owned and sailed many different types of catamarans with all the different helm stations. I just encourage people to try the forward set up.

Great review of this boat! It wasn’t in Annapolis in 2021 so we didn’t see it. We love the forward center helm as well but these hulls are so narrow to the point of claustrophobia. Both the HH and Kinetic have far more usable living space and you still get the wind speed performance you’re looking for. I did a lot of research into electric sail drives and the whole hybrid thing and my own conclusion was that the energy density required in the batteries is not quite there yet - backup generators defeats the purpose. If you followed Jimmy Cornell’s Elcano circumnavigation attempt with a hybrid boat like this he abandoned his attempt and came to the same conclusion. For us, when we’re ready to circumnavigate, this tech does not give us the confidence and safety we are looking for - IMHO. On another note - I like that bamboo interior - gotta show that to the admiral…
@tomriley57902 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Cornell abandoned his circumnavigation because he had a stroke. The whole point of electric performance catamaran is to sail it and use regen to generate power, rather than a generator. I also don't see how having a hybrid generator defeats the point - you have a generator with a fuel based engine....
@secondwindadventures16462 жыл бұрын
@@tomriley5790 This is a direct quote from Cornell's Blog...By the time we reached Tenerife, we had sailed over 2000 miles and despite all efforts, we failed to maintain a sustainable balance between consumption and regeneration of electricity. I knew that Tenerife was the point of no return, as sailing south from there we would be committed to a circumnavigation and I felt that in its present state Aventura Zero would not be able to safely achieve the aim of zero emissions. Fact Check - that was before his stoke. Hybrid is not zero emissions. I'm not in disagreement that electric power is not the future - I'm just saying that for the typical blue water cruiser - it's not prime time and IMHO - i'm not willing to take the risk.

@@dancarter482 Funny you mention this… we were looking at this exact configuration on the HH44. At the time we were spec’ing out a HH50/55 and we asked them what it would cost to upgrade/mod to add inline hybrid but alas… it was quite expensive and we backed off that option as it required a design change from sail drive to shaft drive. They didn’t really share any real world performance as far as how assist or runtime on electric alone - so I wasn’t sure how much cleaner or fuel efficient this was going to be given the huge cost upgrade. The other issue here was that I was going to have to add a bigger battery bank to support this, and this adds significant weight - I was concerned that the performance boat we were going to buy was going to turn out to be not so performance oriented due to weight. Anyway - I was so hopeful that this would work but from my perspective it was back to the issue of energy density/capacity in the batteries. We’ve owned a Tesla for 11 years now and believe in the future of battery electric tech, it’s just too bad there are no superchargers out at sea ;)

@robertfrederick90612 жыл бұрын
To make the "electric propulsion" actually reliable this cat needs 2+ times the present solar array otherwise all it is is a big while elephant coastal cruiser that needs larger diesel fuel tankage for running the diesel genset. Jordan, to say that the electric propulsion will have limited use is just unrealistic unless the vessel will only be used under ideal wind forecasts. If that is the case what will be its use. The only offset for that is employing a full time wind charting service & following those prevailing winds. Electric propulsion is great for relatively calm conditions where either maneuvering in squall conditions is not required or where the vessel is not becalmed. The vessel's solar array has a limited generation potential so its appliannce use needs to be sized accordingly. The position of the mast step has already limited the available sail area when compared to a more conventional rig. The price point is "jaw dropping" given the footprint.
@LoanwordEggcorn2 жыл бұрын
I really dislike this particular design, the more I review it. That said, there's nothing wrong with electric drive, with a diesel backup. And it keeps improving as battery costs fall, etc.

@@LoanwordEggcorn Twelve years ago I began learning solar with a 600W residential solar install. I had the foresight to mount the panels on arrays that articulated both horizontally & angled for the earth's seasonal tilt to the sun. By doing this I am able to attain approximately 35 - 40% more energy capture compared to flat mounted panels that only get full perpendicular sun exposure 2 -3 hours /day. Most sailboats are not large enough to have sufficient flat mounted panels to generate the power needed for an "ELECTRIC DRIVE" & the "domestic" needs of the vessel. If the vessel owner had very deep pockets the vessel might be equipped with massive LiFePO4 battery banks but they would need to be recharged under all conditions; for example, cloudy/overcast skies = low solar potential; vessel becalmed = no sail power or wind turbine power=utilizing the electric drive & then the big diesel Genset to recharge the batteries/as well as power the electric propulsion motors. Most electric motors installed in sailing vessels are intended to be used for AUXILIARY propulsion & generally are not powerful enough for inclement weather conditions that are sometimes encountered. I could be mistaken but the current technology slots "ELECTRIC" sailboats in the "Niche" category of "Coastal Cruisers" in ideal atmospheric conditions. If the diesel Genset has to be employed more than 15% of the vessel's operated time then don't annoint the craft with the "ALTERNATE ENERGY" moniker. Have a nice day, cheers

@@robertfrederick9061 Agree with most of your points, and think you have a pretty clear picture of some of the current situation, BUT: 1. There are already both DIY and commercial electric drive sailboats that have more than enough solar and battery to power all house loads, including air conditioning in the tropics. It's already been done. Most of those are performance-oriented boats that, due to their very good sailing performance, only rare ly need to motor. (The same is true whether the drive is electric or diesel.) I don't have references handy, but it's definitely already been done. Being performance boats, they're generally lighter and more efficient than condomarans and therefore have lighter energy needs. 2. I would never consider an electric drive for global cruising without a diesel backup or generator. Electric drive can work without diesel for coastal cruising, day sails, etc., as you already noted. 3. Conventional diesel generators are poor:. The better way to do it is to either use a parallel hybrid where both the marine Diesel and Electric motor are connected to the prop, or a serial hybrid using a conventional marine propulsion diesel like a Yanmar connected directly to an AC electric motor used as a generator. (Use the same motor as the electric drive for spare parts commonality.) You can run all at cruising power for the same equivalent performance as diesels through a gearbox to the prop. (The losses from a gearbox are similar to the losses from an electric motor and generator. Modern electric motors are very highly efficient, including when used as a generator.) 4. Electric motors needn't be small. There are readily available 35kW (50 hp equivalent) AC induction motors for 1/2 the price of a 10 hp Yanmar. Electric motors for performance per cost are already very low and getting lower. One could fairly easily put 2 x 300 hp Tesla motors on a catamaran. 5. With a serial or parallel hybrid, a smaller battery bank can be used, since the Diesel can be use for long becalmed passages. The battery bank would probably be sized for house loads at anchor. Given that most people anchor in mostly sunny places, the backup generator probably would not need to be used often. Etc. So I think a hybrid drive is already a lot more practical than you seemed to indicate, AND, it's already been done successfully. Keep in mind things in the solar and electric drive/battery space are improving very rapidly, pulled along by millions of land EVs (and solar installations) being built every year, and accelerating.

Some interesting ideas, particularly the variation of a forward cockpit, but lots of details that seem less than great. Chris White designs are much better.

If I liked it, it's a Coll catamaran, it's not bad but honestly I don't think it's worth that money, but it's just my opinion 😉👍🙌, also it's not very clear to me where all the water would drain that surely falls on the deck forward, in that type of configuration, cordial greetings from Havana 😀🇨🇺✌️🙌⛵🌬️

I understand that this is a performance cat, but hey... What a horrible cockpit, with that awkward placement of the seating positions. Why a single spreader? No grabrails on coachroof. No extraction for the cooktop. Appears to have no rear vision - must be tricky to dock. And also: shared head in a 54'? Other than that, is a really beautiful vessel and probably a lot of fun to sail. Thanks for the review
@svshootingstar2 жыл бұрын
I would absolutely HATE the cockpit forward. The lousy Fischer Panda generator on a $2+million boat is INSANE. The unsupported glass in the aft cockpit is pretty and STUPID. Might be your idea of a great design. Not mine.
@AnthroCryptoDoc2 жыл бұрын
Give it a 5 out of 10. Electric boats under sea trial never perform like they do on paper. Warm weather boat only, batteries and solar less effective the farther north you go. Front cockpits and no rake on front windows of yacht will be a hazard in high seas. not much space for a 54 foot yacht and for over $2M. For price performance design and layout not a contender against a Seawind or other similar class. I am in the market for a 50 to 56 footer, would not consider this a blue water boat. Nice to put around the Caribbean, but not a serious boat.

I saw this boat in St Petersburg, I was surprised at the poor build quality. The fairing around every radius edge was uneven and fit and finish was not great. For over 2 million dollars I was shocked to see what looked like a home built boat. Also the use of flexible solar panels was surprising as they don't last very long, for a boat capable of remote cruising. Generally I was disappointed, I kind of liked the layout. But no fixed helm seat? I think walk through head is good as there is no need for three heads. I can understand why she has not sold for 2 years. It is trying to compete with Gun Boat but is way off the mark.

Sailboats are slow but they always want to go fast. Why ? I just dont get it
@testicool0132 жыл бұрын
It’s not just about going fast it’s about being able to still sail in light winds while other boats have to motor
@tomriley57902 жыл бұрын
Sailboats aren't that slow when you consider what they take with them and how little fuel they use. The other points about being able to sail fast - enables you to avoid or make port before a storm. Means that going at a reasonable speed you're carrying less sail and so less stress on the boat if it's caught by a gust - and in that gust the boat will potentially accelerate rather than simply be overpowered.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see the forward cockpit as being “very protected”. In heavy weather with waves crashing over the bows and through the trampoline netting that cockpit would be a miserable place to be. It might be safe, but certainly not pleasant. And do I really want to be opening up the forward doors to the cockpit while charging into heavy weather? All the potential water entry into the cabin? No thanks!
@omer-kinali2 жыл бұрын
Bad finish jobs everywhere. I can't imagine the build quality is any better. Zero elegance in furniture design. Honorable mention: the engine throttle console looks horrendous. Dining area is relatively too small compared to the rest of the boat. Location of the helm would make it rather difficult to dock. $2.1M is far too expensive.
@pauljm592 жыл бұрын
Yeah no that’s stupid $. It’s too basic for a $2m boat in my opinion it’s too much of a compromise. I get the construction & the all electric but over $2m even with lots of carbon is ott.
@rayray51952 жыл бұрын
Do not like the layout on this boat you will experience a lot of spray through the tramps in rough seas in that cockpit. Not a fan of the forward cockpit on a cat. Fly bridge helm is mush more desirable in my opinion and safer with better vision.

Nice cat - but.... has anyone of you forward-cockpit fans ever been in bad weather with waves even going over the saloon roof? Plus not everything is in the front - the traveler is not. Not a great setup IMO. And who builds a boat without hand rails on the saloon roof? Meh. Does not really seem all that thought through.

Horrible design !! How can a cat be that big and have so little room?? A protected cockpit ?? Are you serious?? That is the most unprotective cockpit I've ever seen and the wind gets trapped which is the last thing you want on any sailboat especially an electric one. I guess the designers missed the whole aerodynamics semester in college.
@rwhunt992 жыл бұрын
Not my cup of tea, it leaves me with a lot of disappointments, basically because I don't know exactly what you're gaining in speed for the sacrifices you made with the narrow hulls. I did like the longer sugar scoops. and the bamboo but I would question how good those solar panels are and how long they last. I would prefer more electric power wind gen instead of diesel, but i get what you're saying about it. I feel the layout leaves some wasted space but again there's different opinions on that also. The price is laughable, but right now it's a sellers market.
