The Torium 14HG is the cheap reel that can. In this price point, it can winch in some fish and it is just as powerful, if not more powerful than a Ocea Jigger and it costs less than half of the OJ.
A reel you can use for slow jigging and live baiting, even fast jigging - and one that doesn't break the bank. The Shimano Torium 14 is a great all around reel...but you have to switch out the short handle to a longer after market handle if you want to use it for slow jigging.
I messed on the handle install, but fixed it right after this video and didn't redo that part.

Great reels. Started w the 14 then the 16 for bangin around for rock cod, lings etc. Got the oj 2000 & 3000 & about 12 others up to makairas & stellas. Grown very accustom to this reel for cod & the 14 just feels perfect for trolling/mooching kings. Saving my f customs 1500 2000 & 3000 for slow pitch in less rocky bottoms.

My 1st jigging reel. I now have 6 & its still my favorie & most balanced for jigging. Just feels right. Just respooled w 30 lb braid after 5 yrs? I think I paid 170.00. Like it better than my 16, my abu garcias even my ocea jigger which is a great reel. GREAT 1st reel for jigging (& salmon).

Hey Kit Im having a helluva time trying to find someone who sells a rod clamp kit for the Torium 16 HG. Called shimano who doesnt sell parts anymore. All I needed were the 2 flat head threaded screws but no one sells just those. Any leads greatly appreciated. Bagged 30 pounds of fillets Mon Aug 9 Bodega bay. 12 lbs salmon fillets,18 pounds lingcod/rockcod fillets. The 16 with 50 lb braid handled everything very nicely. November - faralons - big lings.

Thanks for sharing your video, using the Torium 14 HG with a long handle for slow pitch jigging is a great idea! I currently use the Avet SX for my slow pitch and it fits the purpose. I have the Torium 16 for fly lining live bait, which works perfectly for me. Too bad they don't make the 14 HG in lefty. I think the Penn Fathom 15 narrow 2 speed would also be a great option for jigging as well. Just curious. If the Torium 14 HG with long handle equals the price of the Ocea Jigger, wouldn't it be better just to get the Ocea since it's milled and has better parts?

It's actually not the same price. There are other handle options that are cheaper...I just chose the better one. I already have OJs, and i wanted to show an option for people that can't get an OJ, when I made this video, OJs were strictly sold in Japan. The Avets, even two speeds are too slow when you fish deep, if it fits your area and works well for you, then hey, jackpot :D

This is the regular version, not the japanese version - so it is a clicker. The Japanese Toriums have a spool lock instead of a clicker.

Hi dear friend, thank you very much for this video. I am going to get the torium 14. For the longer handle do I need a expensive one like the one you used ? Or one from China Aliexpress would be fine ? What Pe line you gonna use for this reel ? I am also very curious of wat type of soft plastics you are going to use on deep water. you just need the length - so you can get any handle you can get your hands on, just as long as it is longer than 85mm. You can get the stock handle of an Ocea Jigger 2000 if it's easier to get it.

Great video and channel. Would you recommend the Torium 14HG paired with a 6ft 2 100-200g vertical jigging rod fishing in 50-150M of water? It would be good if the reel would also be versatile enough to use for other types of fishing e.g bait fishing. I have an ocea jigger 2000NRHG for my slow jigging rods.

the torium can be used for fast jigging, if you can get the narrow versions and change the handle, it would suit the purpose. if it's wide, it can still be used but a bit cumbersome.

Hello I also took the decision for buying the torium but on my last trip to Fujairah, I faced difficulty while reeling in the line from the big depth as if there was too much resistance so any advice regarding that

what about your Jig? it might be your jig is too heavy. your jig might be spinning on the way up.

If you are fishing deep, there might be cross currents or even just a swift current at the time, so it's really hard to say...could be a lot of factors really. Best way to see if there is something wrong with the reel itself, is to drop it down in shallow water and see if the resistance is there.

The torium 16hg comes with a handle with 2 positions to make it longer. I think the 16 is more versatile than the 14 and you should only buy the 14 if you specifically need the slightly smaller size. The ocea jigger also automatically re-engages the spool when the handle is turned. The torium needs you to flip the freespool lever once you want to start cranking the line back. The torium range are really good quality for the price.

We're talking about this reel for slow jigging right? The handle is too short for slow jigging. The 14 is close to the size of the 1500 OJ, OJ handles are again, too short, you can use them, but they will work better with a longer handle. The JDM toriums automatically re-engages, like the OJs. Toriums are good value for money, for those that can't afford an OJ - that's why I made the video.

Barracuda. The handle was 750 and the reel was 500 or 600 something like that.

@@harveybeddard5093 the name of the shop is Barracuda. The handle is a Studio Ocean Mark. That brand is not known for being affordable. :) It is the cheaper of two handle sets - the other one costs double since it is carbon fiber.

A lot would argue that is it personal preference Rick, to tell you honestly. However, the Torium is going to be lighter and it will not have a handle backplay that all Avets have. I have a huge collection of Avets that kind of sit on the sidelines these days. Both good brands - just that in my opinion, they [Avet] haven't really changed a lot for a long time.

These reels only came in HG when I made this video - So, its for slow jigging. The spool is also a bit too wide for fast jigging, you need a narrow spool for fast jigging.

Man you asemble it wrong.You must place that square washer underneath handle, you have square undercut in handle where you MUST place that square washer.That is most important part, without it handle will slip under big load.

Fishing in general, especially if you want the better brands isn't cheap unfortunately. However, who knows, down the line, Shimano might decide to give away another reel and you always have a shot if you are a subscriber :)

Good video, The Torium is a fantastic reel. It will work for many applications. It is not a Jigging reel. Will it work absolutely. There are some fundamental differences in a "Jigging" reel. Narrow spool, Lever drag and machined gears covers the most critical. The narrow spool self centers your line, making it the choice for both speed and slow jigging. Lever drag is the standard for jigging for obvious reasons. Machined gears, all of the gears in jigging reels are machined, due to the fact of the amount of stress put on the reel from the combination of the fish, and the longer reel arms that is prevalent in jigging reel. In slow jigging the reel does almost all of the work. You rely heavily on the reel and the line. None of this means that you can not use a Torium for jigging, it is an impressive reel. I have always been a believer that one should buy the best that one can afford. If you have the extra money I would recommend that you look into a reel jigging reel. If not, there are many options out there that do not cost as much, and The Torium fits well.

Brent - Well said. However, you are wrong in a few points. Firstly, let's start from "not a jigging reel". You are correct and incorrect - The Torium you are familiar with is not really a pure jigging reel, and it is. You see, The Toriums sold in Japan ARE made for jigging. I suggest you look them up. Secondly, narrow spools are only beneficial in fast jigging. IT is a disadvantage in slow jigging - There's physics involved. I suggest you watch the spool dynamics video, the jigging reels video I made and if not, go to the facebook of japanese angler's secrets and see what he said about narrow vs wide spools. I made my videos way before he posted and have been talking about this for a few years to help people understand. Lever Drag is not the standard for jigging - star drags are, on ocea jiggers and saltiga, two of the most sold reels for jigging, especially for slow jigging. The Inventor of slow jigging, uses star drag reels for a lot of reasons, I would not argue with this guy with assumptions, one of them - You don't have a spool lock (in place of a clicker) to use on lever drags when you snag.

You do not get defensive and that is rare these days. You are correct that there are a lot of people that do not use lever drag reels for jigging. But if you look at almost all of the "Slow pitch reels" in the US they are almost all lever drag reels. The wider spool for the same diameter reel will hold more line. A slightly larger reel with a narrow spool and you over come that obstacle. I have been slow pitch jigging for about 14 years and the trend has going to narrow reels with long arm handles. I like learning about how others view, and do things. It gives me a chance to pick up some info that my help me down the road. Since I can not afford reels in the price range of a Studio Ocean Mark. I have only a few options in a lever arm drag. Most reel manufactures only make right handed reels in lever drags. Accurate's new jigging narrow spools and Avet has a few. Shimano does not offer left handed, except in the star drag. It seems like you have some great knowledge on the subject, wish I could pick your brain a little. Thanks for the info and making videos. @@brenterwin99611 Thanks Brent, I think people who get defensive when asked "why" have a limit to their understanding and don't want to be exposed, so they get defensive - to discourage people from asking. Anyway, Slow jigging didn't start from the US, it started from Japan. So I think when you say "standard" It's a Japanese standard, not US. If it's something like...say a Mustang, then ok, the rest of the world doesn't know about the car, so that's a US standard. But This is something like Sushi...you know what I mean? The rest of Asia is way more advanced in Slow jigging than the US. The "other" standard for Slow Jigging Rods comes from there. On a narrow reel, your line stack/arbor diminishes faster than on a wider reel. this means your drag will spike up faster than on a wider reel. This is a huge disadvantage since slow jigging is a light line system.
