Levain Bakery takes the crown for me, not only because their cookies are the best, but because they donate all the unsold cookies to people in need at the end of the day rather than throwing them away. I wish more businesses would help out those in need

Im from California. I dont know if this is true about all companies but at the time I worked for a grocery store and I worked in the deli. We marked all the salads and meats that we opened and if they did not sell by that date we threw them out. They are not bad at that time they just didnt look as nice. I asked why we threw them out instead of donating them. I was told they did at one time but they kept getting sued. It wasnt worth the hassle. If you recall there was an episode of Sienfeld where they were donating the muffin bottoms and the baker was sued too. It was a joke in the show but much their material came from real life.

Stephanie Santiago sure! The Leviathan bakery is definitely a great stop for giant, warm, delicious cookies. Another tip is that a lot of our litter corner bakery’s are pretty darn good. I’ll also recommend the New York folded ice cream, you can find some really good folded ice cream in china town. There are also really good Italian gelato places in little Italy, which is just a little west of China town. Honestly, there are a lot of things I could recommend but those are some of my favorite

The best chocolate chip cookies so far, in my life, have existed in three places at different times in my life. In my early teens, I took swimming lessons here in L.A. and there was a Winchell's Donuts on the corner and they had a delicious chocolate chip cookie...omg... I miss it. Going by just visuals and ingredients I'd probably pick the Maman cookie too. It depends on the type of cookie you prefer, Maman is a crunchy on the outside chewier and softer on the inside and Levain is definitely a cake like texture cookie. I prefer Mamans texture and flavor profile in general.

I agree. I've made both kinds of chocolate chip cookies for my family using recipes from Joshua Weissman and Anna Olson. My whole family said that they preferred the crispy-on-the-outside-soft-in-the-inside cookies. They said the Levain kind didn't feel like a real cookie, but more like a small piece of cake!

Absolutely agree. The Levain cookie looks more like a meal rather than dessert. I'd probably be so full after eating just one, that I wouldn't want to even look at another cookie for the rest of the day!

I tried the levain cookie and it was kinda underwhelming, it didnt have enough salt and I tried really hard to find flavor or something, it was all just very uniform the Maman one looks insane I really wana try it, its good theyre using a special kind of salt and different nuts bc atleast it seems itll have different flavors that balance out well but not a uniform cookie.

Based on the video, it seems like the full rankings are: 1. Levain 2. Maman. Excellent but almost a little too much going on, with the three kinds of nuts etc, almost more candy bar than cookie, but I'm sure it's incredible. 3. Jacques Torres. I've actually had this one, more than once. Delicious of course but I agree that its thinness keeps it from having the contrast in texture you want between the inside and outside and its relative lack of salt means that it gets a bit cloying by the time you're halfway through the cookie. For that reason I could never finish one in one sitting, and the problem with that is - again, because of its thinness - it was completely stale twelve hours later when you fish the bag out to eat the rest of it. 4. Dominique Ansel. The milk gimmick means you can't really compare it to the other three. Also there's a major conceptual flaw: you start with the milk and end with the cookie? Isn't that backwards? Does that mean you need more milk after you finish it? The whole thing is ridiculous. Anyway, nice video, and it makes me miss New York.

I used to live on the very same street as the original Levain bakery, like I could walk out of my apartment and in less than one minute I was there. And I went there WAAAAYYYYYY too much, lol. Hands down the best thick gooey chocolate chip cookie ever. The double chocolate one is exquisitely decadent as well. I would kinda go back and forth between which cookie I would get. It's also very hard to finish the whole cookie in one sitting because it's so thick and rich. I'd wind up having like a quarter of it left to save for later :p Don't visit NYC without visiting Levain!
