I made this tonight, it was awesome!! I cut out a cup of sugar, half a cup of oil and melted the chocolate chips (I don't like my cakes to have any crunch/texture). It was soft and perfectly chocolatey, not bitter not overly sweet. I used the chocolate whipped cream from his chocolate cheesecake recipe instead of the frosting and ganache that this recipe calls for. It was absolutely the right choice!! I made it in a 11x17 inch pan - this recipe makes A LOT of cake, so invite over friends to help you eat it!

Whip the butter longer before adding anything. Then add your icing sugar in at least 2 stages. Use the lower setting to combine first, before beating fast. That way it won't spill out! Same for flour. Lovely recipe, btw :)

I made this cake for my father in law 89th birthday. He is a chocoholic and I wanted him to have his dream cake. With lockdown, we all know old people don’t go out as much and he doesn’t get his usual brownies and sweets nowadays 😝 Well, I messed up the ganache so the cake was less elegant than John’s one, although it was not too bad 😂😂😂 it was a *huge* success. My MIL complimented me, normally she doesn’t like chocolate cakes, and she had a big piece. My boys, ate everything and didn’t detect the zucchini at all, and they loved it. I will make it again, it is amazing! Thank you John, all your recipes are brilliant! 💖

Ik this is years later but congratulations to your son. And I will admit. I use cake strips because of this channel and it works beautifully. No more trimming and dry, crispy edges. You just get a very uniform cake that is fluffy and moist all the way throughout

This cake is absolutely amazing!!!! I made it yesterday & OMG! It is outrageous how yummy it is! The only few changes I made was using a large rectangular cake pan because I did not have three 8-inch round cake pans. I only had two. I am also gluten free, so I used Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten Free Baking Flour instead of regular all-purpose. This is going in my recipe notebook, so I have it when family and friends load me up with lots of zucchini again. Thanks for the video tutorial and recipe! You are awesome!

I made this cake for the 1st time today! OMG - my kitchen smelled like chocolate heaven! My only regret is that I didn't have baking pans that were straight, so straps I bought wouldn't stay on, so I have domes, but plan to flip cakes upside down to frost, so dome not as noticeable! I am a huge fan of urs. You inspired me in baking.... Try this. Take a large paper plate, cut out a hole in the middle so that the paddle attachement can move around from inside, connect the paddle attachement to the standing mixture, placing the paper plate (upside down) in between. While mixing, make sure you hold the paper plate on place(if needed) so that it perfectly covers the top of the bowl. The dry ingredients wont make a mess around again. :) :)

I work at our local grocery store in the bakery and I can tell you that the customers in my small town love your recipes!! I introduced the concept of cooking from scratch there and all I can say is I feel like a hamster in a wheel because they buy the desserts faster than I can make them! Without a doubt - this recipe will fly off the shelves. I do have a question - is there a way to alter the recipe to make it gluten-free so our GF customers can enjoy it too? By far - your channel is in my top 3 favorites!! Thanks for all you do - I truly appreciate it.

I have tried this and it's amazing!!! Zucchini makes the cake moist. I just use a handwhisk and cut the recipe in half and reduced the sugar for my mom. Didn't manage to do the buttercream since it's already 1am by the time i finished the cake and ganache so i just whipped some of the chilled ganache and used it as the filling (?). Will try again and use the buttercream🙏😊

I found your channel recently and i've really been enjoying watching a lot of your videos. Tonight i tried this chocolate zuchinni cake. (The first recipe of yours i've tried) so here is my honest review: 1. My husband knew there was zuchinni in it. He took one bite, said it tasted "funky" and refused to eat any more. He's a chocoholic, so it takes a lot for him to turn down chocolate cake. But i think the mental aspect of it got to him. 2. Then i feed it to two friends who came over for dinner. I refused to tell them what was in it until after they tried it. They both ate their slice and said it was "just ok" ...not BAD at all, but not GREAT either. It was definitely not up to the usual par of baked goods they get from me. They did comment that it had great texture, but didnt feel like a very strong chocolate flavor (even with all that cocoa powder!) 3. The texture of the cake is great! And it looks amazing in pics. Also, the way you decorated made it very striking but still manageable for novice bakers. I DID peel my zuchinni, and grated on a finer cheese grater than you did. The end result felt almost like it had coconut in it, but no coconut taste obviously. 4. The measurements for the butter in the frosting vary in the video and in the blog. I think i chose to follow the wrong one. I'm willing to give the frosting recipe another try, but i did have to fight with it a bit to make it usable. 5. Overall, i'm quite sad to say this recipe doesn't "stay on the menu" for my family. I am still looking forward to trying a couple more of your recipes, and i genuinely hope they turn out a bit better. For those who LIKE zuchinni/chocolate cakes, this may be a great recipe for you! But it just wasnt a big hit for us. And i dont know whether it was a just ok recipe, or whether choco/zucchini cakes just arent for us.

A tip would be to peel the zucchini and blend it so it can be worked into the wet ingredients easier and much harder to taste and spot

Fantastic as a birthday cake thank you. The zucchini or courgette, as we say here in NZ, made it beautifully moist, and as you said was tasteless and unidentifiable in the cake. I reduced the recipe by a third as I only had 2x 8inch cake tins. It worked beautifully, as did your buttercream icing and I will certainly be making this again.
