The chap who best fit me in my current cycling shoes measured my foot, chose the shoe, then had we wear the shoe around the store, (whilst we discussed the new fad of 1x drive trains) for about 45 minutes to let my feet swell (if they were going to) then re-checked the fit. They were two sizes down from the last pair I had bought from a different store, (same brand shoes, [Sidi] ). This fellow, Mike Wood of Team Active, Battle Creek, did me a huge favor that day. He fitted me like a bike store employee should. They still feel great.

Franciiiiiiiiis! I've got a question I'd love to propose for next Monday/Tuesday if I may? Basically.. handlebars/bar tape & hand numbness. I had a questionable "bike fit" done on a turbo and simply by eye a few years back which, to be fair, fixed many problems and probably saved my knees from turning to dust. I haven't moved my position since as I don't really feel the need to and I've stayed almost pain free. However, numb hands after 2+ hours of riding is a recurrent issue. The last time I changed bar tape to a softer, thicker than usual set was brilliant initially, but as it started to wear down I noticed the numbness returning. I'd love to know whether that's just my hand/vessel physiology or whether it's likely to be a fitting issue? My saddle and bars are completely level with the hoods obviously sticking up for a comfy grip. I don't find that I'm forced forwards onto the bars to support much weight. It's a confusing one! Thanks in advance, much appreciating the content!

This is a huge problem where I live. All of the local shops don't bother with shoes, so you have to either travel hundreds of miles or order online. That means you have to do that distance twice, because your size won't be in stock and you just can't trust online ordering for something as critical as shoes.

The more I listen to what James says about Bike Fit, the more I want to get a Professional one done. Cost be Damn! ✊
@chriszanf7 жыл бұрын
But why would you spent x amount on a bike, x amount on shoes, x amount on clothing, x amount on a helmet and not spent x amount of making sure it all f'king fits? You dont just walk into a tailors, point at a £1000 suit and say "I'll have that one". You get measured and then fitted. Now, the other side of the coin is exactly what James said: lots of 'bike fitters' emerging that have watched a youtube video on how to use a particular fitting system with motion capture and suddenly theyre an expert charging you £150 - £300 a fit. Find people who have been fitted. Find out if they got a good fit or were 'fitted up' then pick the one who has the best reviews. Remember that some people travel miles just to go to a specific shop (whatever the business) because of the quality service. Why wouldnt you do the same?
@johnnydoe667 жыл бұрын
chriszanf I have been riding a long time and I have read and watched numerous things on bike fit. I don't suffer from any discomforts or pains, even after riding my longest ride of 201.38 miles. I am more curious as to how closely I have my bike dialed in..,but a really good bike fit is expensive. On the other hand, I get your point. We spend exorbitant amounts of money to ride, why not a bit more to get fitted the best you can

Yup, fit is the #1 most important thing. If it doesn't fit, one doesn't balance on the bike naturally, and it's just a waste of money. There are a couple of approaches, but check out how Vanilla does it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5ymk62saZmFjdk

This may sound weird but from many years of not riding clipless and then going clipless and a pair of specialized mountain biking shoes it felt like I almost had to retrain my pedal stroke because of the advantages of being clipped in. And in doing that retraining my brain the numbness has gotten way my feet feel more stable my pedal stroke is certainly more stable and the power down put is even better especially climbing. I wonder if James might have some input on that theory of somebody that's not used to being clipped in having to retrain their mind on what their feet are doing, like that's spatial awareness that you talked about

Question/statement: Hand numbness and the hoods! Can you hold the hoods in the 'wrong' position, which contributes to numbness? I wondered if my fit was bad and/or weak core muscles - as my hands went numb. But I played around with different positions and seemed to have solved it. The hand position I saw James use in this video is what I settled on. Is there an area of the hand you want to keep pressure free?

Hi, I changed from my old shimano plastic sole to new Giro Empire (laces) last april due to foot pain (arch). The pain was exacerbated with the carbon sole of the Giro. So I got orthotics insole made. Then the pain in my arch went away, but I got acute pain on the outside of my foot (near the small toe). I found out that my shoes were too tight, so the podiatrist stretched my shoes and I relaxed the fit of the laces near my toes and tight the laces closer to my ankle and this seems to solve the last foot problem. I am now slowly recovering (as I am still riding a lot) from these foot injuries.

Johnny Cab - cycling shoes are not complicated, but they are specific to the wearer. I just spent a whole day trying on the majority of brands and have found the correct shoe for me -Sidi - as they are the only ones that fit my foot shape. Now the real question - White or black? White is right, but black is easier to keep clean and durable for all conditions - not to mention traditional...

What’s the basis on James’ opinion that ‘everyone needs orthotics in their shoes’? Why is it relevant that the person can feel an orthotic in their shoes whilst riding, if they’re not having any foot or lower limb issues? If the cleats are attached under the forefoot (metatarsal heads) for maximum force during the down phase of the pedal stroke, what good is having mid or rearfoot support - there is no heel or midfoot ground reaction force? Can you please elaborate?
@adammiller74357 жыл бұрын
from what I think he's said in a previous video is that it's a proprioceptive thing. But you are right if there is no ground reaction force then the support in a shoe is less important. and if someone is having issues in their legs it is likely resulting from a muscle imbalance rather than having no support in their shoes. of course, there would be exceptions to this.
@brettsmith32617 жыл бұрын
If that's the case, simply add a pre-fabricated innersole. However, as he states; wearing shoes with a much firmer outsole, such as carbon fibre is much better at reducing flexion through the foot and absorbing into the shoe itself and minimising through the foot (which is what occurs when walking/running, etc). I appreciate everything that he's said in the 'bike fit tuesday' videos regarding various aspects on bike fit and position. I was just curious to know his rationale behind his statement is all.

Great video. I wish shoe manufactures would be more consistent within their own model line. I bought my SWorks a couple years ago and they fit like a dream, wear and tear has me looking to replace them, but the current SWorks is much narrower and finding something that hits the same sweet spot is hard. Also finding shops that carry a wide enough selection of manufactures is nearly impossible.

Great content here. Indeed persuaded me to sign up for a bike fit with James in a few weeks. Does Francis get a commission! :) I always found shoes a "problem" as I have very long (48 or 49) but narrow feet. If I find something long enough they are usually then too wide. Currently in S Works 6 with the green max arch support inserts (I don't wear inserts in my running shoes so tend to agree with the comments about probably needing them in bike shoes) which aren't perfect but better than other ones have had which included the "narrow" version of the Bont Vaypors which did not find that narrow actually. Interesting to see in other comments there is a narrow version of the S Works. No more impulse buys though until been checked out :)

Why doesn't Sigma sport stock the Specialized S-Works 6 in wide and narrow fit? They are widely available in mainland Europe and the states, so why doesn't any Specialized stores carry them in the UK????
@TimGrose7 жыл бұрын
Good to know they exist. I have also found lack of availability in the wide and especially narrow (as I would need) options (assuming they actually exist of course) in any cycle or running shoes in the UK is very common. Presume lack of demand. Sigma do (or did) stock all the width options in Bont shoes however.

It's really is funny how many riders uncomfortably ride bling bikes. Spend your money on your contact points 1st...it'll keep you riding longer. I wonder the statistic of used bikes sold for no other reason than uncomfortable ride quality, on their CARBON DI2 pain machine with crappy thin bartape and shit factory saddle. Why not drop back to a 105 bike let's say and get good tape , seat, bibs and shoes and upgrade your group later. If you're not comfortable you won't be riding enuff to make the upgrade worth while anyway. See ya tomorrow. ...CHEERS

i was getting a bit of hotfoot towards the end of my 6 -9 hr rides in the peaks....i sorted it by doing up the shoes tighter and getting fitter, which is weird because when I use to do ironman races I'd undo the shoe a bit to alleviate the ache. Both issues I think are a process of getting fitter to the task in hand in a specific landscape, climate and intensity.

I've decided I hate clipless cycling shoes. They are more efficient for climbing, but... I've gone through several brands, including $1000 custom fit shoes with custom orthotics on custom-fit, custom built bikes. I rode 25k miles with touring shoes on off-the-shelf bikes, not even the right size, with not a single joint issue. But click-in shoes f'd my knees up in short order. Some are better than others, but I think the lack of pronation and paucity of cushion is just unnatural, and is a bad thing. No one I have ever known with touring shoes has ever had an issue, but they *all* have trouble off-and-on since going clipless. They just figure it's aging, but I know 70 year olds in touring shoes that are fine. I'm glad it works for some people, but it sucks for me.
