I got the Mustang GTX 100 when they came out so I could gig with the Princeton sim on it at 100 Watts. But now that Im doing more cover band things, I like downloading the patches. Less time tone matching, more time practicing. I never had the original Mustang to compare it to. I enjoyed the spontaneity of this format, Shane! Thumbs Up. Always hit the slides!

Been regularly gigging my Twin Tone Master and it’s still going strong. I’ve run into a few touring musicians that use the TM amps in more abusive situations than mine is subjected to and they have no problems either. Everything is repairable, or you could use the chassis to hand wire it into a tube amp. You could also make these into speaker cabs if you don’t want to repair or mod it. There are options.

I had 3 of the modelers mentionned here and several others through the years including 2 different line 6 series, Vypyrs and Voxs. To my experience the best tone was from Peavey Vypyrs and Voxs. The Peavey vypyrs had very good tone experience, but the 2 different versions i had both had issues and glitches + you need their big footswitch to get the best of them and they almost cost as much as the amps themselves. My favorite and the one i kept is the Vox VTX150 with a single EL84 tube in the poweramp section instead if the common single 12ax7 in the preamp section like others and it has a 12" celestion neodynium speaker + effect loop + an extension speaker output of a crazy 150Watts 8 ohms that can be use at the same time . If available in your area, the current Vox VTX modelers with a single 12ax7 tube are also very good. A single 12ax7 does'nt make them less reliable, nor heavier, nor more expensive and should be included in modelers list reviews. If you come accross Vox VTX amps, they're definitely worth checking out.

Yep. Agree. I've got a VOX Valvetronix and it is great. There is an "Original Clean Tone" offered as one of the presets - so I have that loaded twice onto the Footswitch. One as totally clean and the other has Centaur Overdrive with Room Reverb added. My own pedalboard is loaded through the front end. Works a treat.

I have a Boss Katana 50. It is true you need the Tone Studio software to send patches to it and the like, but for a home practice amp that's not an issue. I think I paid $220 US for it 5-6 years ago, so really good value as well.

I’ve had the Mustang, the ToneMaster Twin Reverb, and a Katana, but my favorite combination are the UAFX amp pedals with a ToneMaster FR-10. Yes, that setup is considerably more expensive than a single combo, but for $1200, I have an outstanding sounding Deluxe Reverb, Vox, and tweed options that act like the real things.

By the way, does the UAFX 'Tweed' pedal sound like a Bassman?
@ThatWhatIsNot

I’ve never actually tried that. I usually just use it to get clean to edge of breakup tones for 50s style rock. That said, one of the cabinet options offered is a “Fender 4x10 Bassman cab with Jensen P10R speakers, mic'd with a 57 dynamic mic.” According to UA, this gives a “great scooped, high fidelity sound when used clean. Use with the KP-3K boost and low gain for clean, somewhat pristine sound.”

Saw Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders this summer - she was rocking the Tonemasters (two of them, Reverb Deluxe, both mic'd on stage). Sounded great. My Blonde version is the best gigging amp I've ever had - you get the tone with light weight, attenuation to create "natural" overdrive at much lower stage volumes (I play small joints), and added reliability. No tube tech or maintenance needed. Oh yeah, sounds fantastic. A game changer.

Hi Shane really great Vid. Impressed you took on the Slide. Totally agree, as with all Music Gear, it's Horses for Courses. As I am 68, I have arrived at "My Sounds" I want to get, weight is another big issue and budget really focuses the mind. When i picked up Electric Guitar in 2018, I decided early to go with Pedals to get my sounds, so that was another Amp priority. For me I first got a Fender Champion 50XL as I did not like the Boss Katana 50 (still don't get on with it simply because it is not what i need). Then I did a Jensen speaker upgrade in the Champ and I had a nice budget Deluxe Reverb pedal platform. Eventually I wanted to move up and went with a Tone Master Super Reverb. It works perfectly as my High Headroom Fender Clean Amp with attenuation and without the weight. But most important it is exactly what I want as my Pedal Platform for my Mk1 Tone Bender Fuzz, Dirty Surf Jangle, Klon and Blues Driver OD tones I use for everything else. Cheers Pete

Thanks for another good review. Biggest thing I’d like to see on a digital amp, like the Katana, is a 10 (ish) band eq. That’s the biggest reason I and many others need to use the computer hookup. An eq like that on the face of the amp when you run it direct to a PA would be a huge plus. And as long as I’m wishing… a built in tuner. Shane, and btw… men suffer from skin cancer most commonly on the tips of their ears. While I dig baseball caps, a full brimmed hat is more protective.

I have the Fender Mustang V v.2 half stack. It moves a lot of air when playing it through the speaker cab and you can just hook up headphones and quietly practice without having to bring the speaker cab out. Far as I know it's pretty much the same as the III v.2 just more power. Just bought a Mustang GTX 100 haven't unboxed it yet, but prices have definitely gone up, the half stack was only about $100 more than the combo. I'm biased to that Fender spring box reverb, and agree that these amps do a good job of recreating the sound of old Fender tube amps and for the most part take pedals good and give a good bang for the buck.

Austraya... bonza walk around Shane. I lived there for 40 yrs, but now I'm back across the ditch. I don’t miss the flies. I hope you try the VOX Valvetronix in 2025. In the Andertons Blind Amp Test, their VT40X was the standout winner - based on the valve-influenced clean tone. The VT100X has a few more goodies. There's a 12" speaker and an Aux-in jack (might be able to run a FX Loop into that). I got the VT40X with the Footswitch because it fitted my budget better. That Footswitch gives me an 8 piece peddle board to work from. I only selected 4 of the available amp options for that - with 2 settings each (Clean, and Centaur Overdrive with Room Reverb). I run my own pedal board through the front with some BOSS classics and Caline/Joyo additives. Nice. I still have a vintage Laney 65w amp with 2 input channels, a XRL mic-in and a FX Loop out back. Vocals through ambience pedals is way cool. That dual amp rig works for me. My LP clone with p90s kills it. Anyway, Shane. Love your work. Best wishes for 2025 mate.

Sadly i one of the poor guys who own a Mustang 3.....MK1.....nice amp, but i miss a orange modeling. Mine doesnt has the hiss, and i use it occasionally. My secret tip for home use: Vox VT40. Sounds awesome. Bit oldschool and the 100 Watt Version isnt availabe anymore, but i use it all the time in my living room because the sound is so "Tubelike" with the pre amp tube in it. The orange, soldano and vox emulation is even in 2024 top notch. Sadly it has not a effects loop on the 40w version and the power adaptor is awful. And you can only use it with usb (there is a app) and the effect chain is very minimal. But it works very well with pedals. I love it and you get it even new from thomann for 200 to 250 bucks, on ebay for 100 to 150 (euro). Thought the Nux M60 Mk2 would be a thing, but i heard bad things about it, constructionwise. Will test it. But i tend to buy a used Mustang 3 Mk2 on ebay in red. It has everything. Works good with pedals. There is a third party app and you can adjust everything on the amp, effects loop and enough power for live gigs. And i never liked the boss katana. The look is awful and its good for metal. Thats it. And i dont like extra dlc for bluetooth. The only thing people wanted for the mk2 was bluetooth and they sell it extra with the mk3? I mean wtf?

@@doctorskull8197 The TMs do have some features I like. XLR DI out with IR, power scaling, and the light weight. If I were to get one I'd wait for a good used example in a a few years when the price drops to what it should have been new. The only reason Fender can get away with the price tag is because of the vintage aesthetic. Put the TM in different style enclosure and the price tag would be a tough sell. I'm adopting a wait-and-see attitude for the longevity issue and service/repair issues before I buy.

Except they weigh more, don’t have attenuation, etc.. I get the point, but tonemaster is more than just a digital version of the real thing, so you can’t really compare fairly by price.

Fender Tome Master is an evolution of the Mustang Amps. Fender really is monetizing the Tone Master series, by making one dedicated patch per cab, where the Mustang put em all in the one amp.

My mustang v is crazy loud, with a preamp in front (or loop) its could hold its own in a very big crowded room. I run a 15 and 4x12 cab stereo. combo amps are louder if they are elevated crucial if you play with a loud drummer!

@intheblues - Nice comparison of top modeling amps! I have the Katana head on my list of potential new amps, and perhaps be finally free of having to buy new tubes. Since you've mentioned the Kemper profiler, how would you compare it with the HX Stomp / XL? Both would need a power amp section, though the HX is typically not thought of as an amp per se, rather it's sort of a swiss army knife that also does pedalboard stuff quite well.

12:54 2x the volume is 10x the power, so…400 watts? I don’t remember what the original put out. Agreed on the FX loop, though. I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t add that.

Nice Vid Shane! Very Informative. I have both the Fender Tone Master Deluxe and Twin Gen 1. I still Gig 2 to 3 times a week and depending on the Venue determines which one I take. According to Sweetwater and Fender the Tone Master Amps are built in Modules thus any certified Fender Tech or other Tech can repair them if needed. Both told me the Cost of parts was not bad and labor would be the only concern if they're out of warranty. But that's Always the highest Cost and God only knows what the parts cost now days? But that was a Big concern of mine before I purchased them. Please keep up the Good Work and Cheers from Salem, Oh. US. Merry Christmas to you and yours also!

@intheblues Thanks for the video, but would like to add my take..... I really wanted the Tone Master. But have you tried the Champion amps. You can get a Champion II, put a better speaker in it, and it can be setup to sound almost identical with a Tone Master. That is the only reason I have not bought one. I like the fact the amp caters to old skool players that just want a simple amp with knobs. But that is what you are paying for. For me, I have a Princeton Stereo Chorus from 30+ years ago that I still gig with today. Should I replace it with a Tone Master? Only time will tell. As far as the Mustang V.1 and V.2?, they are masterpieces. I have a Mustang V.2 II and III. The fact that Fender made killer models of their own tube amps was genius. When I bought my Mustang III, I was looking at the Hotrod Deluxe and the George Benson Signature HRD. I had the opportunity to try them side by side with the Mustang III. They let me load up the patches for the HRD and GB-HRD. The Mustang sounded so close to the HRDs, I wound up buying the Mustang. Not to mention the features like the built in USB soundcard and the balanced direct output. The downside for me is the FUSE Software. The new Mustang GT(X)s are trash. But looking back, the older Mustangs are so good at modeling the tube amps, I am sure it put a dent in higher end amp sales. Hence the creation of the Tone Master.
