Great video. One thing to watch out for if you are putting in a sun like you did at the end is the shadows on the ground. You have to consider the direction of the existing shadows (trees in this particular example) otherwise it will look extremely fake.

Hey Russ! Great idea doing a video about editing stills. I discovered Luminar AI a while back, myself. You can also use it as a plug-in on Lightroom. To really see how great their sky replacement works, take a picture where the sky is visible through trees or something like your railroad trestle. It's amazing how it can find every little piece of sky without affecting anything in the foreground. Now, to be completely blown away, get a shot like that with some reflective surfaces like windows or water in it. I have not purchased the new version, but a very interesting feature it has is the ability to remove power lines. That would be huge to me! Thanks again for all your great content, Russ.

Sky replacement is a tricky thing to pull off believably, especially when it comes to panoramas. As a photographer, I pay attention to the direction of light, and you can clearly see the shadow lines from the trees going in different directions across the image. Clouds look different depending on what angle the sun's rays hit them. Unfortunately, many of the sky/cloud replacement images are much more uniform in direction than what the panorama shows. For the viewer who has been paying attention to light direction, this can lead to a bit of a cognitive disconnect where they can spot the replacement pretty quickly. For those who haven't it may leave the viewer with a sense that something isn't quite right in the final image. So, wherever possible, pay attention to the light direction, and pick sky replacement images that show light coming from the same place. If there are scattered clouds depicted, also look at the field of view of the image and consider whether any spots in the image should be shown in the shadow of some of those clouds that are off-camera. I recently saw some real-estate photos of a friend's house that showed obvious sky replacement -- they were shot on an overcast day, with uniform lighting and no hard shadows anywhere, yet the sky chosen was blue with scattered clouds. The subject doesn't match the sky conditions and it looks fake as a result.

Another way to do this is instead of taking 21 photos you take 42 photos The first 21 are exposed for the ground and the second 21 photos are exposed for the sky. Then when you use either Photoshop or luminar use your 21 images of the sky that are perfectly exposed now you have the original sky but with a much better exposure. You can also take it to a whole new level by shooting a Photorealistic HDR both for the ground shot and the sky shot now you're working with a 42-bit color depth image that can be processed in luminar or Photoshop using the 32-bit HDR for example in Photoshop you choose the option tone in Adobe camera raw. But remember Photoshop automatically defaults every time you turn it on to 8 bit so you have to change the mode to 32 bit before you start. You can now export this 32-bit image as you like it could be a Tiff, DNG, or a JPEG and you'll reap the benefits of Superior dynamic range and color depth.

Perhaps “Sky Replacement” is the easiest way to differentiate Commercial (Part 107) drone pilots from recreational flyers. Commercial pilots will go to great lengths (even replacing half the image) to make “their” photos prettier and more marketable. Recreational flyers, on the other hand, generally want to remember the day as we personally experienced it.
@emillard19762 жыл бұрын
I have mixed feeling on sky replacements. We all like to touch up photos but replacing an entire sky seems like it takes away some of the challenge of nailing a killer shot. I’ve taken so many crap photos over the years but when I’m in the right place at the right time and actually get a good one, I’m super proud of it. To me this is just, meh. I’d rather get fewer good shots the “old” way than take some ho-hum picture and replace the entire sky and make it look stunning. I’m sure you can pass these sky replaced photos off as legit, but you know yourself you didn’t take that shot.
@Paradicted2 жыл бұрын
If you happen to get lucky enough to get that perfect sky shot which is rare than just keep it. Keep in mind that you may be replacing the sky but if you went back to the same spot a few days later or even a few hours later the sky would be totally different than what you shot anyway. Replacing the sky is not one of those dreaded face filters that they use on Facebook, etc. but simply a different ‘time of day’ than what may have been there at a later time anyway.

Luminar is a wonderful software, I use their programs since many years now and there is one big problem that will not be solved in a short time now and that is : the longest side can not be more than 15000 pixels to save or export the picture to a file They are informed since version 3 but until the latest contacts with them it looks that it won't be changed to a higher limit any time soon. Even the new Neo has this limit. I use a workaround to edit in Luminar and be able to have a 15000 px Plus image, but this is by using other software . So until they give us more pixel count on the longest side we have the need of more than Luminari alone. More about this problem can be found in the Luminar users forum.

@@richw4166 well, even going back to Kodak days, not everyone would just push the button. I am sure sky replacement would still be possible using photomontage, although, this would be way beyond the ability of those buying into the classic ad. And hey, i agree, there is no such thing as pure unedited photo, unless you look at the raw file with hex editor, i guess. Vision at the moment i've pressed that shutted button, this is exactly what i want to convey, indeed. Its all about where do i draw the line. Honestly, for me, personally, for the photos i edit with my own hands, pressing the shutter with my drone overlooking a sky without a single cloud, mid day, and replacing it later with a golden hour sunset from a stock collection, no longer counts as conveying that moment. Anyway, just my 2 cents, and again, i do realize, everyone edits. With the tools today making it so easy to make heavy edits (and it isn't just Photoshop, Gimp or Luminar, even phone apps are slowly starting to provide heavy handed editing options only a few taps away), i do often wonder, should i believe a photograph nowadays? When i see a gorgeous landscape, if i actually get there, in person, is it going to look nearly as beautiful? Just thinking about today's world out loud i guess...

“Sky Replacement” seems only a half-step away from “Ground Element Replacement,” in which that railroad viaduct becomes Half Dome with the click of a mouse. I prefer my own photos, thank you.
