There are many genres to choose from when you want to spend the day on the couch with Netflix. But if you really want to detach from reality and take a binge-watch trip into other worlds, nothing beats the fantasy film genre.
Netflix provides a wide selection of great fantasy movies. You can’t go wrong with movies like Pan’s Labyrinth if you want a little bit of horror and suspense in a fantasy movie, but if you want something lighter, Stardust and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World will not disappoint.
But if you want something out of the ordinary you should catch these lesser-known fantasy films on Netflix.

The second Dragon Heart Movie "A New Beginning" Isn't good, but it isn't all bad either. It just comes off cheap and cheesy and tried too hard to be a continuation instead of a stand-alone story. The third movie "The Sorcerer's Curse" was just ok. Not all bad and not all good. The fourth "Battle of the Heartfire" was decent and almost on par with the original in production and acting with a solid story. You can probably skip the movies in between as they aren't memorable, but I found the fourth to be enjoyable. But again all opinions are subjective and you should honestly make the decision for yourself about how good/bad they are.
@memento81

Do yourself a favor and don't rewatch it. I too saw the original as a kid and loved it. Should have left it at that. It really didn't age well. Revisiting it will probably only taint a good memory.

For those who don't know or remember The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus was the last movie from Heat Ledger, they had to finish the movie with Jude Law, Colin Farrel and Johnny Depp instead when Ledger died, and surprisingly they managed to make quite a convincing twist/homage out of that.

Eh. I've tested enough "got bad reviews, but looks interesting" movies to know that most movies get bad reviews because they're bad. And I've watched enough "got great reviews, but looks boring" to know that even if I don't personally like it, I can usually appreciate what the critics found in it. Thus, it's not because I don't acknowledge that a movie COULD be good (yet get bad ratings), or that it COULD be bad (yet get good ratings)...but it's statistically unlikely. As such, I don't bother wasting my time any more. If a specific critic (who lays out what they liked and why they liked it) convinces me that I ought to take a look, I might. Otherwise...nah.

Yeah, the ratings are mediocre, but go check the ratings on some of YOUR favorite movies. They probably aren't much better. I thought I would love Ready Player One based on the previews, reviews, and director. Sadly, no.
@JeantheSecond
@JeantheSecond 6 жыл бұрын
William Phillips I ignore IMDB at my own peril. They are just the regular movie going public. They can’t be trusted on certain things, like Christopher Nolan movies, but not bothering to check the ratings has always resulted in me either wasting my time and getting irritated with a terrible movie, or missing something good that sounds worse than it is. Why wouldn’t I use that resource. Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t work as well for me. You just have to know how to translate the scores. You need a few hundred ratings for a clear idea of the quality. Otherwise, you’ll have to seek out more reviews or take a chance. The worst movies could be rated an 8 with only 17 ratings. Horror movies are almost always rated lower so a 6 is a would be a 7-7.5 for another genre, but use caution for anything under 5. TV shows get high reviews, so under 7 probably isn’t that great. Avoid anything of any genre under 4. Always, no matter how interesting the plot sounds. Boy, have I learned that lesson. With Netflix and Amazon (my streaming servicesof choice) streaming everything from indie gems to no-budget catastrophes with no way to tell them apart, IMDB has become indispensable.

Fantasy is one of my favourite genres, but since Lord of the Rings (and the Hobbit) and Harry Potter. And although fantasy has gone over to TV, it seems like people have no interest in fantasy much anymore when it comes to films. Lord of the Rings is great, but it's not the greatest fantasy out there. At least in Asian countries fantasy is still going strong, thank you.

Off the list, Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned is a very well done fantasy about time and how it affect each individuals. A group of children happened upon an underground egg and by breaking it opened, their lives are ultimately changed. For one child, her world remained the same with the exception of her missing friends until a thirty something years old man has a convincing claim that he was one of the missing children. From the kids to the adults, they gave nuance performances and is one of those rare find gem.

I really enjoyed Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when it was released. Gilliam is a genius. And it has the distinction of being the last film in which Ledger starred. I liked Solomon Kane, too, which I had to watch on a free movie website years ago, because I couldn't find it anywhere else. For a B-movie, it's actually not bad at all--a Robert E. Howard creation (Conan the Barbarian).

I saw Cirque du Freak in cinemas when it came out and wrote a uni essay on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Don't need to watch them on Netflix cause I own both on DVD.
