I tried most popular fast food meals to see how they impact my blood sugar. If you live with diabetes and would like to know what meal to have and/or if it's even OK to eat fast food as a diabetic this might be an interesting video for you to watch. It will help you decide what meal to order and what else to do next time you are in for a quick bite.

This video was really challenging to make for me. As I was testing these fast food meals, I was asking myself if I'm doing the right thing. My body can't handle eating like this regularly. So I'm really looking forward to getting back to normal which in my case is having fast food only on “special occasions”. @@TypeOneTalks Hay TypeOneTalks Not really a reply to your post or specifically related to this video but im not sure how to reach out. I am Insulin Dependent Type 2 and In my country there is only 2 official CGMs they are the Dexcom G6 and Abbott Libre 2 CGMs however for type 2 they are incredibly expensive as in prohibitively expensive. I have come across a Chinese branded CGM called an AiDEX these can be purchased in the UK under the the name GlucoRX by memory and in NZ they are called AiDEX lite. from what i can see they are a hybrid type with similarities of abbott and dexcom g6 they have a transmitter that lasts 4 years and the sensor component comes in 2 models one lasts 10days the other lasts 14 days. the sensor portion comes with a patch and the battery is in the sensor unit not the receiver. these sensors from my experience seem to have far greater accuracy than the Libra. Now i am not affiliated with them just came across them on my own and i was wondering if i could get your opinion on them or perhaps do a video about them with your thoughts?

Your videos have helped me a great deal. I was ignoring fat and did not understand why my levels stayed high for so long. My doctor said the level should come down 2 hours after a meal (I am type 2), and when I got my CGM I could see that was not what was happening. Your graphs over several videos show patterns more like mine and I now see that I also have to manage fat. Diabetes is so complicated and involves so many aspects of your life. These videos are really helpful for me at this stage in my dance with diabetes. Type 2 for 25 years with gastroparesis. I've been diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer and i am being treated with a medication that raises my glucose. Before, following a routine of light exercise and diet allong with multiple injections throughout the day did the trick. Now, it's totally different. The guilt and inadequacy I feel with high blood sugar only adds to the stress. Watching your videos about the glycemic index and hearing you talk about trial and error has really lifted my spirits and encourages me to keep fighting till I get right.

T2D, Just got my A1C down to 5.8 (down from 7.1, 12.8 before that). Strategy is huge, and having a go-to option at any restaurant can be a big help. Always gotta pay attention to how your body reacts to different things, and at different times. Something as simple as shifting the bulk of my carb intake earlier in my day I was able to lower my overall glucose levels. But everyone's body will react differently. Isolate variables, test, measure, and document.

I’ll bring my own low carb bread and change out the buns or bread at restaurants, I have brought my own keto tortillas to change out the ones on burritos at Taco Bell and the breakfast burrito at Burger King. No love lost. McDonald’s will even put the Mac sauce on the side if you ask them, so you don’t have to use it, but it is quintessential Big Mac!

As always, a very nice and helpful video. Whenever you drop another video it's invaluable to my health journey. However, I'm confused about the question of saturated fat raising your blood sugar. One of the hot things going on these days for many people in including my wife :-) for blood sugar control is the keto diet - high saturated fat and low carb. Many of the influencers even say as a means of blunting blood sugar spikes is to add things like a full fat dressing e.g. olive oil, avocado oil, etc. to salads, meals, etc. Yet, your take is that saturated fats are specifically raising your blood sugar. Is there a consistent ethic in these recommendations? Or is it just how your body after years of analysis and experience responds to it?
@TypeOneTalks
@TypeOneTalks 3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment. I believe there is truth in both of these arguments and maybe we all make a mistake of simplifying our argument and not sharing the other half. It is correct that fat slows down blood sugar spike caused by carbs. But it is also true that high amounts of saturated lead to reduced insulin sensitivity and increased insulin resistance in a longer time frame. Insulin resistance is a problem in all forms of diabetes because it negatively impact our body's ability to move glucose from bloodstream to cells where it is needed.

The best fast food for diabetics is none at all. I've found the ketogenic diet to be the best diabetic lifestyle change out there. If you want a hamburger, make a large lettuce, tomato, bacon avocado salad and grill/bbq your patty, set it on the salad and top with cheese. Make your own mayo, use a keto ketchup , mix them together to make a burger sauce and use that as the salad dressing. There are also many different recipes to make several types of pizza crusts and ground pork rinds and almond flour to make fried chicken. You'll never see another spike in your life.

Good video, and glad you pointed out how terrible most foods are for glucose control. The nutritional values are an estimation to what should be in the food you are eating, but will hardly ever be accurate to what you get when eating out. Healthy options are very limited at most places, so it can be frustrating as a diabetic. You can always request to remove or replace items in the meal to make it a better option. Exercising before or after eating while out and about isn't convenient, but it's certainly possible. Basically: if it's less than three grams of fiber per serving, don't eat it. Avoid fried foods since the fat will make glucose control difficult. Also, excessive protein will convert to glucose, which can be a problem there or more hours later for your glucose. As for coffee, decaffeinated is the way to go or at least an option with less caffeine (since it will spike BS). Low fat, no sweetener options are the best, because even "sugar-free" will still raise BS. Be careful out there and enjoy your life.

@@ProudCanadian-vv6bk The release of glycogen can happen with any exercise, but it's more common with resistance training. Glycogen is made in the liver, and stored in muscle. I usually exercise when I still have insulin on board, but if I don't, I need to take some while lifting. I am still learning about this, so don't take my word for it.

Try not to eat heavy carbs like bread from cheeseburgers and thick crust pizza. I love fast food and I’ve found that I can get away with eating fried chicken or chicken nuggets without raising my blood sugar significantly. Make sure to count carbs if you can, keeping them at a max of 60 g per meal- that’s usually a safe number to avoid a significant rise. I rarely eat bread that isn’t whole grain whole wheat and avoid sugary drinks unless I need them.

Honestly? Junk food doesn't really taste all that great. That's not why people eat it. People eat it due to lack of TIME (clue in the name), not indiscipline, and lack of money. And also lack of opportunity. What happens if you are not anywhere near a place where you can cook?

@@manidipamandal451 Nice try. "not near a place where you can cook"? Uh, what???? Time management skills. Need to improve your time management skills. Plan on the weekend what you will eat for lunch and dinner the first few work days of the week.

@@gsr4535 what world do you live in? Where I am, there aren't kitchens and pantries in offices, for the most part, far less on say construction sites and in marketplaces. And most adults do go out to work. Are they supposed to not eat the whole day? like say from 6 am to 8 pm. Do quit being absurd and condescending. Oh yeah, not everyone has a 5-day or 4-day week, and one can only cook so much, and time management means for SOME people, having to prioritise other responsibilities (say, caregiving), or work that requires extensive travel. Just because you can do it because of certain privileges, does not mean everyone else is free to. Stop constantly deriding people's circumstances as their own fault. Develop some empathy skills yourself, might be useful in day to day life as well. Gosh! Great you can live a nice, tidy, black-and-white, all-or-nothing life with your privileges, but maybe don't try to dismiss the experiences of strangers whose lives you have no idea of? It's nothing worth being so sanctimonious and rude about for sure. Sometimes, people have to eat out. And that is the RESOURCE (time and others) management this video was about.

Being type 2 diabetic with young onset alzheimer's, diagnosed 7 years ago, remembering to take my medications, two different diabetic oral medications and insulin (despite sticky note reminders), I ended up in hospital and admitted to hospital with sugars of 35, yup 35! Coming out of hospital one of my visiting nurses at home suggested I watch you. Since my discharge, my sugars have been 5.9 to 7.9, but mostly in the 6's. The first thing I do every morning is watch you. You have virtually saved my life. I've lost 18 pounds (mostly water I know), but what a gift you are. There is nothing like hearing from someone with lived experience.

In nutrition for health, failure is not only an option, but its a great tactic and tool. I allow cheat days per month and cheat weeks per year. Else, trying to never make a mistake will guarantee failure, frustration and quitting. Don't let the perfect get in the way of the good.

McD has an à la carte option. On rare occasions when I'm there, I order 3 or 4 Quarter pounder patties with some mustard. Not much spike this way although they must put some carbs in the burgar as this much ground beef at home has less to no spike. Other fast food places typically do this too. Anyway, stay away from carbs as much as possible. Humans did not evolve eating carbs over the 1+M years. Carbs were/are only for short term survival. You don't see fruit pictures on the cave walls. It is only in the last 10k years that carbs have been consummed, i.e. too short of a time for evolution.

What about after 24 or 48 hours? The immediate impact is pretty obvious within 1 to 3 hours (digestion, absorption, etc) however, in my 50 years as a T1D, I noticed some carb heavier foods, regardless of fiber, can be corrected on the same day then see an impact the day after and have to correct more than usual the next day, sometimes 2 days after. I realize everyone is different - just curious if this is something you experienced as well. I do want to offer a suggestion, if you happen to be in the US, try Pita Jungle. I usually get the "Keto Tofu Platter" which has griddled marinated organic tofu, broccoli, cabbage-kale super greens, and turmeric cauliflower rice. I order this without the tahini though. It's pretty tasty, impact is very minimal (for me) and the turmeric cauliflower rice is a nice addition. Thanks for sharing!

I always drink a pint of water with a tablespoon of white wine vinegar, about 10 mins before a high carb meal, which works really well for my pre diabetic state. Will often have a packet of walnuts with me during the day, find a handful before a highcarb meal also helps reduce the spike.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! I had pizza this evening, always a challenge! Interesting finding on the wrap! I have swapped over to wraps this year, though always homemade and wholewheat wraps, because i can stuff them full of veggies and get more fibre in, compared to a sandwich. As you mention, its about the whole meal composition, rather than a single component. I’m always learning! So thanks again as always for sharing.

What I don’t understand is portion size. I have been diagnosed type 2 recently and I’m still grappling with the change in diet(60 years of eating whatever I like is hard to change over night). Also I think the biggest ‘crime’ you can accuse fast food chains with is the amount of sugar in almost every step of their recipes.

I used to get the Chipotle burrito bowl as a salad, but I found out they _always_ put disgusting seed oils in the food, so I stopped going there altogether. If you check it out, you'll find that the saturated fat _in the natural food_ doesn't have the same effect that the seed oils and trans fats you're consuming have. As a bonus, they come with proteins that (in type 2) help lower blood sugar by prompting a healthy insulin response. Physical activity literally pushes blood sugar into the muscles, which is what you're experiencing, since you don't really _have_ a significant insulin response, as a type 1 observer. Similarly, fiber doesn't lower blood sugar. It delays the rise in blood sugar caused by the other ingredients. PS: The best fast food for diabetes is the McDonald's 1/4 pound burger patty, x 3 or 4. PPS: As for balsamic vinaigrette, I make my own with the least sugary balsamic I can find and I also cut that with apple cider vinegar. I adjust for the lack of sweetness with liquid stevia. I'm planning to cut all the sweeteners out with the exception of allulose, because of its blood-sugar _lowering_ properties. Allulose is actually a sugar molecule that your body only absorbs by about 1/10, but it causes a liver response that has a net negative glucose effect. I'm type 2, so your mileage may vary.

When I goto McDonald's, I get two double cheeseburgers hold the ketchup. Both get extra lettuce and tomato. One of them I order with no bun. When I get them, I throw away half the roll from the burger and I make an open face stack of 4 burgers, lettuce and tomato. The half roll is 15 grams of carbs. The meat and cheese have minimal carbs. So I get lots of protein and fat from the cheese! No blood sugar spike!

really enjoying your commitment to this topic! have you heard or seen the data around how the order in which you eat your food can dramatically reduce your blood sugar spike (like by 50-60%)? I apologize if you're previously done a video on this cuz I am a relatively new sub to your channel...but the basic premise is you can take 2 identical meals (e.g. steak, mashed potatoes, and broccoli) and if you at meal #1 like normal (bites of everything throughout the meal) and then eat meal #2 the following way, broccoli first, then steak, then potatoes, you glucose spike is dramatically different? I started doing this in general and noticed a big difference in how little spiking I get...anyways, I'd be glad to find the videos on this and share...with your approach to these fun concepts, would love to see you do it in your style and approach...anyways, keep up the great work, I appreciate you!

Blood sugar doesn't cause progression of type 2 diabetes, high insulin levels do. Slow acting, high carb+fat meals can triple insulin levels for 12 hours but never spike glucose.
