For a long time I used 100+ octane Av-gas from my local small airport. It was quite expensive, around $4.50 to $5.50 a gallon. It was alcohol free and DID have a low-lead quality so you could NOT use it in your car with cats, but was fine for small engines like outboards, chainsaws, mowers, string trimmers, etc. Now ethanol free is available at a lot of local gas stations and is higher octane and lead free. I was told by an old timer that all High Test gas is ethanol free but have not been able to verify that. Since I have been using it I have had NO failures with carbs and don't have to drain fuel over the winter. The fuel will last for years without deteriorating like the Ethanol fuels which last about 6 months. Especially my outboards, large and small, will start on the first pull or turnover. Great for generators that only get used infrequently. Well worth the extra cost. As far as the mix, I use what the manufacturer suggests . . . . a little extra oil never hurts. Like Jay said . . . "Spark plugs are cheaper than pistons."

I heard that high test is ethanol free but I'm a little skeptical of that! maybe one day it was but with all the modern cars now I doubt 93 oct is ethanol free but who knows! Before watching ill say red armor. My equipment running at 50:1 that i used other oils had carbon. After a season of red armor, carbon is all gone and no smoke. All equipment i started with red armor is as clean as a whistle. Red armor for 16 oz is almost same price as as the gold oil. If you can get non ethanol get it regardless of cost. If you cant get stabil 360 to add and make sure to empty in off season.

I use the highest octane gasoline I can find with an oil ratio according to factory specs. I use a Husqvarna 2 cycle oil for my good saw. But, my cheap saw uses a 25 to one ratio. So, I use a less expensive oil for that. As long as it meets the manufacturer's requirements, which you can usually check on the bottle, that's going to be good enough. The cheap saw burns through fuel faster anyway. So there's no use wasting oil. One thing I will say is to keep a list of equipment and fuel ratios in a very prominent place. Write them on the inside of your storage box or on the wall of the shed. Because, as you accumulate power tools, that information tends to be forgotten and lost. When one saw takes 50/1 another takes 25/1 a weed trimmer takes 40/1 and so on, its very important not to get the ratios confused. As far as I remember, people put extra oil in the fuel for older saws from a long time ago because they had lower compressions and were made of iron. They wore out faster then. Now, I'm not sure it makes any difference as long as you use what the manufacturer specifies. Even 2 cycle oil these days is a lot more consistent in quality then it used to be with most of it being synthetic now. But, to each their own. If that's what works for you, that's what you should do.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob! All good points for sure! Ive heard that before that the older oils didn't have the same lubricating properties of modern stuff so old school rations like 25:1 would prob be now 40:1 on modern oil but like you said to each their own hahah a little extra smoke and mosquito control never hurt no one LOL! Thanks for leaving such a detailed comment! Its much appreciated!

What Jay said. The only reason the older saws called for more oil was because oils and lubricants were much less advanced then. Even the cheap modern oils are better than oil was when those saws came out. Run them at 40:1with quality oil and you'll be absolutely fine. I run Saber at 70:1 in everything no matter what ratio is called for and have zero problems. It's probably the only oil I would trust that lean though

There is a converse argument that extra oil tends to gum things up and makes the saw run hotter. It seems likely that excess oil will increase costs and emissions. The petrol evaporating helps cool the motor. If you are getting obvious smoke you have more than enough lubrication. If the exhaust pipe seems wet with oil you have too much. If you know more than the engineers and technical people at the factory start varying the fuel : oil ratio. it seems likely that this ratio will be conservative because even the most careful person will have variations in how precisely they mix fuel Ethanol in the fuel should be avoided. For those on the metric system this is a lot easier to work out

Thanks Jay, I appreciate your follow up - hope I didn’t start the old oil/fuel debate for 2 cycle engines. I run Echo Red Armor oil in 91 octane (gas station) fuel with an appropriate amount of Ethanol Shield. After I’ve completed break-in I mix my fuel at 45:1 for my 50:1 equipment and 36:1 for my 40:1 equipment. Essentially running a 10% “fat” oil/fuel mix and then tune accordingly. I wish I could get 91 non-ethanol fuel but the closet station is over 90 miles away from where I live in the Rockies so it’s not much of an option. I like the idea of the 93 octane Echo Red Armor pre-mix as well, just can’t get past spending almost 30 bucks a gallon as I usually go through 4 or 5 gallons per season. Mixing Echo Red Armor oil and ethanol shield with the 91 octane (albeit 10% ethanol) fuel has worked very well for me over the years. With the exception of my newer CS-501P most of my equipment is between 5 and 15 years old, I even have a 16 year old Poulan Wild Thing and a 20+ year old craftsman 50cc cultivator. I tune all of my equipment myself and it’s rare that it takes more than 3 or 4 pulls (dead cold) to start any of them.

Jay you may be interested to know! That most if not all these premix’s use alkylate fuels.these are highly refined and much cleaner burning than pump gas. Avgas (airplane) gas is alkylate, LL100 low lead 100 octane I mix mine from ll100 and Stihl 2 stroke oil. There is now UL 90 I believe without the lead. Low lead may eventually foul spark plugs but pilots I know don’t worry about that. Try doing the sniff test. Put samples of different fuels on a small plate and you can tell by the smell pump gas from the premix’s and pump gas. Or watch Tyrell dactals video burn testing several different fuels.

Ok Im 70 and can well remember the high octaine leaded fuel from the 1960's . and my chain saws would regularly foul the spark plugs. Vehicles cars & trucks would be burning oil at 70,000 miles. very rare to see a car engine that has 100,000 miles. We would get frozen gas lines in the winter from the water in the gas. Ok im still using two 1960,s Xl 12 homelites. We used regular gas and outboard motor two cycle oil back then. Fast forward today I have vehicles that are still running strong with 2 and 3 hundred thousand miles. very fewspark plug changes. nothing but oil and filter changes. And now my old saws they have chrome lined cyls. Still the originals from the 60,s. I use ethanol unleaded and wal mart super tech two cycle oil. I mix 1/2 pint with each gallon of gas. I dont have spark plug fouling. Only thing I done was install ethanol combatable carb kits and fuel hose. I use my saws plenty. I keep the cooling fins clean. But I think the long life is the muffler. Its a stack. No baffels or restrictions. Lets that exhaust heat excape. The restrictive spark arresting muffler is a hear sink holding the heat to the cyl. and the ethanol absorbs any water making it harmless. if todays ethanol gas is so harmfull why are car engines lasting longer. Even the carbed engines last longer. Also dont use Champion spark Plugs that are not any good.

Hey Randall! Thanks for watching! I know the new stuff is ethanol compatable im just advocating for using non ethanol fuel so you dont have storage or dried up fuel diaphram in the carbs! My echo says right on the box they are compatible with ethanol fuel. Fuel has also changed but so has engine technology I.E. fuel injectiong, ECM, roller cams, better oils etc... so fuel and motors themselves have changed to last longer its not just the fuel issue. Thank you for taking the time to watch and glad you are still rocking those homelites! I got one XL12 I rebuilt but still have issues with it but will eventually straighten it out! Ethanol attracts water 200 times more readily than gas and that water mix will grow algae that plugs the carb. Keep your tanks stored full, minimizes water absorption. temp changes winter, summer, fall will exchange out any air in tank from temp change, like cool in morning warm in afternoon and a full tank wont have airspace so less moisture to absorb if full. Don't use ethanol fuel on watercraft. To much moisture at the lake. Also ethanol eats aluminum parts. Personally I prefer ethanol free in my snow blower and chainsaws that sit most of the year. You can find good lawnmowers and snow blowers in trash by the road if your willing to clean a carb and replace fuel lines. I got a free snow blower in April sitting by the road. Had the green snot in the carb and tank. Ethanol is not a problem in your vehicle unless it sits for months on end.

The best fuel for my two stroke engines is the fuel I mix. I have two blends, one summer and one winter. In warm weather I replace octane booster with Marvel Mystery Oil at the rate of one ounce per gallon. I run nothing but Premium Non- ethanol gas at a 90 octane.. I run Echo Red Armor at 50:1 and I use only 2.6 ounces of Red Armor in every gallon of gas. I fill my 5 gallon No- Spill gas tank with five gallons of PNE gas and use it to replenish my 1.25 gallon No- Spill gas container. I have it marked at the one gallon mark. Fat mixtures are OK but in reality you would get the same results with Red Armor at 50:1. @@georgedavall9449 a quick way to see if you are getting Ethanol is to wipe some on the paint or decals on your saw and if the paint comes off it is ethanol. I made a mistake on my saws one time - I used it to clean the sprocket covers of them. It took the husky decal off of a Husqvarna and the Stihllogo off the side of a Stihl sprocket cover. Non ethanol gas does not do that but I clean them, now, in the kitchen sink with soap and hot water. It gets the oil and sawdust off real good. @@HomesteadJay Hey Jay, always go with the highest Octane possible. Gas loses it’s Octane Value over time, and deteriorates from moisture absorption, if it is a pump gas mix. Higher octane is not all about performance gains, as much as the prevention of pre mature detonation, or a catastrophic explosion of the fuel. I was told long ago, before the age of this Ethanol, gas crap, by a Man that owned and operated a small engine shop, to use ‘high test’ gas, when mixing two stroke gas & oil. Guessing you bought the mogas at the Hampton Airfield? Surprised there isn't a place down by the harbor that sells ethanol-free gas for boats. I don't fly, but many newer engines for ultralights and small planes are actually designed to run best on ethanol-free mogas (unleaded), not 100LL, so more and more airports are carrying that. The Rotax 912 series of engines is very popular, and I believe that Rotax specifies mogas, with the option to run 100LL at the cost of much more frequent cleaning, spark plugs replacement, etc.

It had a peculiar smell to it but it would still burn. This crap today, even premium, does not last from winter to summer. I have to put every saw I have in “storage condition”, unless I am running them weekly. The only stabilizer I have found that will stabilize gas for a year is Brigg’s AFT or 5 in 1, but Walmart does not carry it, anymore.

You would really be afraid of my mix at 100:1, I was to at at 1st but I’m on my 3rd season running it in everything from hedge trimmers, weed eater, blower and chainsaws. Amsoil proved itself to me, and I don’t sell the stuff either. It’s Sabre 2 cycle oil, pure synthetic. Recommended to be ran at 100:1 with engine warranty guarantee. Like I said I’m on my 3rd season very little smoke, smooth running, revs faster, my exhaust screens haven’t been cleaned once, they stay clean. I also run 90 octane ethanol free from a local Country Mark oil and fuel station

Extra smoke is a non-issue with synthetic oils. I run Motul 800 off-road 33:1 in my big saw and there's not a hair more smoke than at any other leaner ratio. Long gone are the days of smoky dino oils. Why I run that ratio? Because I've seen crank bearings ran at 50:1, and bearings ran at 33:1.

Good video Jay. You have a 2-stroke dirt bike, now we need a video of that, and you will need to fire it up in the video too, please 😃. I run 40:1 in all my saws and 2-strokes. If you have the small bottles of mix for one gallon(2.6oz) it easy to calculate different mix ratios by changing the amount of fuel. So for 50:1 its 2.6oz to 1 gallon, for 45:1 it's 2.6oz to .9 gallons, 40:1 is 2.6oz to .8 gallons, and so on. I run maxima k2(full synthetic ester based) in all my equipment and I buy larger bottles(64oz) off eBay as its priced well and it last me a couple months, I also don't see it in any of the places I buy saw parts. When I mix I also use ethanol free fuel as you suggested and I tell everyone to do the same. I like to refill the bigger oil bottles that are for 2.5 gallons with my maxima oil and then I use one of those bottles to make up 2 gallons of mix. One correction in your video if you don't mind. Fatter is typically refers to the air to fuel ratio, not to the oil to gas ratio. If you add more oil to your fuel you actually lower the amount of gas to air because you have oil taking its place as it blends the air/fuel in the carb. Adding more oil to your fuel may lean your saw out and cause problems with the tune which is opposite of what you said about adding less oil "that the engine will scream". So adding more oil will lean the saw out and may require fattening the carb up to get a proper air fuel ratio. Hope this helps someone, and if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask here, my channel, or on the forums(I'm chipper1 there). Hope you're staying cool up there.

Does using a higher ratio of oil for your chainsaw also work for engines like weed eaters, etc.? I plan on buying some ethanol free 92 octane that I can get locally and making my own. Those premixed gas/ oils are quite expensive. The Husqvarna brand is about 35 bucks a gallon at Lowes right now with tax. The one you showed is over 13 bucks a quart I think. I never had to do this in the past but my current Husqvarna weed eater just won't run on 87 octane with or without ethanol.

iv work on engine for years, when ETHANOL came out we saw so many 2 strokes hit the shop , pistons melted in the cylinders, lawnboys , chainsaw weed eater every 2 stroke , then even when the 5% was added to the fuel came out,, i took the tester to where the guy said he bought his fuel , checked it , it was 10% ETHANOL in his mix and at the pump, i tell everyone DO NOT BUY any fuel that has ETHANOL in it and run that in your 2 strokes , we used in everything, ''lawnboy oil, 8 oz's to 2 gallons '', remember that'' and your fine on everything'', never buy gas with ETHANOL in it, for your 2 strokes, i dont care what %tage it says, unless you want to melt your piston to the cylinder , you know you messed up when the engine comes to a stop, and stuck, ''2 strokes'' no ETHANOL at all, ''4 oz of oil to 1 gallon'', this is what i do and i have no problems, at all,

Ethanol burns differently than straight gas for lack of better terms. Ethanol is an alcohol and alcohol will dry up fuel lines/carb diaphragms/ etc... If you can get non ethanol it will burn better, store better, and will not dry out all the rubbers in your equipment. Yes new stuff can run off it but non ethanol is simply better.

The big problem with Ethanol fuel is short shelf life and is hydroscopic and the water phases out in fuel, the alcohol dries out the fuel lines and gums up faster , non ethanol doesn't phase out and has longer shelf life 2 years open 5 years closed, the engines today last longer today due to tighter better tolerance of machinery making them and better oil today, Ethanol fuel is OK in cars for every day driving but not good for small engines that are parked for some time

I believe that most if not all gasoline engines manufactured in recent years (maybe last 20 years) are designed for 10% ethanol 89 octane gasoline. I have been using 10% ethanol 87 octane (regular gas) in my yard equipment ever since we could only buy gas with ethanol at local gas stations (e.g. in my 2003 Toro Lawn Mower with B&S Engine and my 2004 RedMax Backpack Blower and my 1999 Honda Generator). However, you need to be sure the gas does not have more than 10% ethanol. In addition I was told by the RedMax dealer never to put higher octane gas in the equipment as it makes the engines run hotter and causes damage. See these links: www.echo-usa.com/Warranty/Learn-About-Ethanol www.opei.org/programs/ethanolwarning/ I also never drain the gasoline at the end of the season. My brother believed that if you drained equipment, when the last bit of gas evaporated that started the buildup of shellac in the carburetor. And everyone knows older brothers are always right and it works for me.

Hey Will! Very interesting facts there for sure I will have to check the links out! I agree with not draining the fuel, the non ethanol fuel I use fires right up after 6 months of sitting no problem!
