In his book _The Golden Age of Chess,_ William Ewart Napier includes both this game and the 1904 follow-up in which Pillsbury, who was greatly irked by the 1895 loss, introduced an opening innovation that swung the game his way. But most fascinating was Napier's narration of his relationship with Pillsbury. Apparently Pillsbury used him as a stand-in for Lasker, playing the semi-Tarrasch variation above over and over again at every encounter between them! Napier described it as "The life of a canal horse," which seems appropriate.

Lasker escaped from the clutches of Pillsbury, Rubinstein, Tarrasch and survived the aging lion Steinitz before finally abdicating the throne for Capablanca.

One of the best attacking games ever, for sure. I wish you could cover more games by Pillsbury, he's such an underrated player, often neglected because of his short career.

Pillsbury lost because he received the devastating news he was dying of syphilis the day before they played this game. Up until then he was crushing Lasker.

Dear Sir, the present game of Dr. Lasker is truely the best of all games of QGD. In the supreme test of playing the uphill games requiring steady nerve under fire, quick piercing thoughts, resourcefulness, ever calmness, Dr. Lasker is without equal throughout the history of chess. The most qualified world champion has carried out such outstanding combinations out of seemingly harmless position. The double took sacrifice at once exposing and cornering of white king has an excellent claim of originality. Every chess player will surely recognise and will comment that Dr.Lasker's combination s is one of the greatest feats of human imagination. In addition, you had beautifully explained every attacking and defensive prospects from white and black. Your soft tongued lucid analytical commentary is all ways excellent. Thanks for releasing this nice video. Looking forward for such sessions. Thanks and regards. Dmbhangaonkar

Please do more on Pillsbury... Did you know his lifetime record versus Lasker was 5 wins each with 4 draws ? Pillsbury was an incredible player and a genius , no doubt, he didn't learn chess until 16, yet 7 years later he won hastings ahead of Lasker, Steinitz ,Tarrasch , Schlechter and Chigorin. Strongest tournament EVER until Avro 1938... More Pillsbury please Mato and Keep up the GREAT JOB !

Lasker met his match in Pillsbury. He has troubled other leading lights in chess as well (Chigorin, Tarrasch, Burn). A worthy successor to his antecedant Paul Morphy. He was excellent at blindfold chess too.

I completely agree. Lasker still regained the number 1 spot from Capablanca when he was 58 and the Cuban in his prime. He was not as flashy of course, but Lasker in my book will always be a greater player than Capablanca and indeed one of the top 3 ever.

Well choosing between Lasker and Capablanca is like choosing between Bach and Mozart. Depth and resourcefulness here, harmony and beauty there. I don’t think we have to chose, they are both unique and among the most significant chess champions that ever lived.

THIS COMBO IS NOT WINNING!! When Lasker played Ra3 , instead of exf7+ there is bxa3 which saves the game. Qb6+ the only move and White plays Bb5!! To connect rooks and Black does not have a win.
