Mahalo! My first trip was for a conference on Oahu, and I extended to the Big Island. My current job “typically” has quarterly meetings in Honolulu. It’s great when I can extend, but usually I have other meetings that limit my opportunity to extend. (And it’s miserable when I can’t extend, 30-35 hours round trip travel, for 2 nights). I’ve gone to Maui twice, and Kauai once. Loved the beauty of Kauai, but there is something special about Maui.

Mahalo for making and publishing the videos. We love Maui, should be there right now but for this blasted virus issue. This would have been our 6th visit, 7 if you count the Big Island when the volcano popped! We had thought about Oahu but one look at the traffic and highrises was enough to make us think Toronto with palm trees.....no thank you, been there, done that! Watching your videos makes us homesick for Maui. After all our visits we have made some really good friends there and miss them dearly. I am surprised that you didn’t mention renting a condo as a self catering option. We have done that for every visit, so what if you have to make your own bed and cook a few meals, it’s far more economical than using hotels and definitely has the advantage of space . Hopefully when things improve we will be back next year. Aloha.

Hi Paul, sorry about your trip being canceled. You made the right move though. Folks are essentially under house arrest who tried to sneak in a corona vacation. Wow! 7 trips is impressive. Crushing the average. Very cool you saw Kilauea erupt. I saw it dumping lava into the ocean in 2010 and I am wishing it would safely erupt again. We are doing a video on condo rentals soon as I agree, it is a good way to visit, meet locals, grocery shop locally as I love Hawaiian brands, and save a lot of money on a Maui vacation. Aloha, Jordan

@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide We've been vacationing on Maui for years. And a couple of years ago we finally did a day trip to visit Molokai. It's a quick flight from Maui... which also offers some great views! You can park at the commuter terminal (for a fee, of course but not too pricey). If you're looking for excitement, Molokai is NOT the place for you. With a population of just over 7000, things are quiet and laid back. No big resorts, no traffic lights (pretty sparse traffic overall) and a grand total of 2 gas stations on the entire island! A couple of small grocery stores. Not much in the way of shopping but some nice small restaurants. On our visit, our plan was to start the day on the east end of the island then work our way west to catch the sunset. Heading east, just keep going until the road ends at Halawa Valley. The road is narrow and twisty but offers beautiful scenery. Kalaupapa National Park is a must... the overlook of the peninsula is amazing. The west end of Molokai is the dry side so the landscape is much more the open, grassy variety. We hung out for a while at the beach but it was quite windy that day, and the idea of driving those unfamiliar roads in the dark wasn't appealing so we didn't make it until sunset but headed back to town. We did find some ice cream and a nice spot to end the day. A nice surprise was our flight back to Maui. There was a total of 4 passengers on our flight and even thought the flight was scheduled for a specific time, once everyone was present and accounted for we took off and headed for "home". So if you get the chance, Molokai is definitely worth a visit.

Aloha Katelyn, good question. We recommend booking flights as early as possible and hotels. Southwest allows booking 6-months in advance and other airlines a year. But with cancellation policies more lenient at hotels and airlines, you can watch prices and shop around more. Sept and Oct have the fewest visitors so you may be able to find some hotel deals.

I disagree on Maui for the first time for one reason...if you go to Maui first, all the other islands will be a let down haha. I did Oahu first and loved it because I had never been somewhere tropical. Going there was awesome and it was all I knew up until then about Hawaii. But going to Maui and seeing more of a blend of traditional Hawaii with some of the modern city life, seeing the amazing beaches, experiencing all the wonder that Maui has to offer really made it clear to me that Maui has all the best that Hawaii has to offer and I had such an appreciation for it because I had already experienced the big city lifestyle of Honolulu. Maui is by far the best island overall and is my absolute favorite! But I'm glad it wasn't first or else the others would have been a bit of let down in overall experience for different reasons, though we love them all for different reasons

Haha, I thought we had a rebuttal! Good point, going to Oahu and then the other islands makes for a different experience (appreciation). We loved living on Oahu but Maui offers a blend of both as you say. Thanks for the comment!

Hello is it better to travel by plane to Honolulu and go to Maui or travel to Maui straight. Because the travel time straight to Maui is 22 hours while in Honolulu is 16 hours

once you arrive in Honolulu, it depends on your connecting flight to Maui. Hawaiian and Southwest have flights that leave about every hour. So, it may be 3 hrs to get from HNL to OGG.

Hi! Question for you. We went to Maui in Oct of 2019 and loved it!!!! We want to come back for our 45th anniversary in 2022. Can you make day trips from Maui to Hawaii? My husband would love to do the volcano tours but we don't want to have to find a second hotel and so forth. Thanks!
@TheHawaiiVacationGuide
@TheHawaiiVacationGuide 3 жыл бұрын
Good question as day-trips are possible. I'm sure there will be more frequent inter-island flights by 2022 once things get back to normal. You could fly into Kailua-Kona with over an hour drive, see the park all day, and drive back. It would be a long and busy day but doable. Volcanoes National Park has a lot to see near the visitor center but you may not have time for Chain of Craters Road.

Why is "Not jungly" a con? And there IS jungle on Maui, just not as much as on Kauai or Molokai. I actually kind of preferred Maui over Kauai for this reason, because it had more varied landscapes. Kauai was TOO jungly in my opinion. But it's not like Kauai doesn't have other habitats, and I probably wouldn't mind so much, if the jungle didn't have an effect on the climate. So I agree with you about the weather on Kauai. This is one thing I didn't like. Waimea Canyon looked so amazing in the pictures, and the island's weather completely ruined our trip there. That being said, Maui was the first island I visited as well, and I think it's a great place to start. It has a little bit of everything, and the beaches, swimming and snorkeling are better than on some of the other islands, but now after visiting Kauai, I feel Maui is too touristy and commercialized. I also felt it was a bit lacking in wildlife. Kauai like you said is much quieter and more authentic and better for nature lovers, but the swimming isn't great, so a week might be a bit too long. And yes, I do recall our package to Maui being quite expensive. I disagree about pairing Maui with Oahu. We ended up taking a ferry to Lanai for a few hours, and I'd personally recommend taking a ferry to Lanai and Molokai. Why go through the hustle of flying, when you have three islands right next to each other. And this way you can experience two completely different sides of Hawaii. But I certainly wouldn't spend more than a night on either. They have some interesting sites, but like you said, they are undeveloped and difficult to get to. Oahu, eh...... Oahu has cool sites, but I feel it's too crowded and modern and too much of a tourist trap. I've heard it feels more like a big city than a relaxing island. We almost went to Oahu, but I'm glad we opted for Kauai instead, as we read afterwards that a lot of the main sites and trails on Oahu require reservations now, at least a month in advance. Plus, I keep reading about conflicts between Native Hawaiians and White people. Oahu used to be cool, but now it's gotten really lame. I think Big Island is also a strong contender. That was the first one my dad went to, and it has a little bit of everything. It has resorts, but also still has that rugged and authentic vibe, and you can drive for mile without seeing a single soul. But most people seem to go to Maui first, and I personally think Maui is fine for an intro island.

Having been to all the islands except Lanai and Molokai we now go mostly to the Big Island. But, we are stupid. Don't go to the Big Island. Really.
