Mettelhorn and Platthorn are hidden gems as a one-day out-and-back hiking/mountaineering trip from Zermatt. It's a route that I'll be using again to help me acclimatise to bigger mountains in the area.
The route starts from the northern outskirts of Zermatt, Switzerland's picturesque ski resort town, taking paths that zig-zag up the mountain and take you to some stunning Alpine views of famous mountains like the Matterhorn, Zinalrothorn, and Weisshorn.
The journey to Mettelhorn was a unique Alpine experience that doesn't pack the same effort punch that lies in most Mountaineering routes while still delivering spectacular mountain views

@@TraintoSummit How did you learn the rope skills and mountaineering safety? I'd love to have a go at climbing some of the bigger mountains in the world but have no idea where to start regarding equipment and how to use it etc!

@@dan_mills__791Thanks for watching mate. The 2 best ways to learn would be to do a mountaineering course over 4-5 days. During these courses you end up meeting people that are also starting out and can buddy-up with them. I also reccomend booking a trip soon after the course so you get to practice them. The second way is to find a mountain you want to climb and hire a guide, you can learn skills from them as you're going along (Option 1 is more thorough though). I learned the hard way, mainly because I was broke and stubborn. I learned by reading from books and then applying in the mountains (how to use crampons, Ice axe/self arrest), this leads to a lot of guess work and can be very dangerous. The crevasse rescue course and Trad climbing courses we then learnt later down the line and were invaluable. Hope this helps!

I left the camp site at 11 am just to make sure I would be completely alone, and I was ! arrived at the last col at 7 pm realizing it was too late to climb the mountain 🥺so I turned around in the almost darkness (still epic) but without a headlamp I slipped, twisted my ankle and had to hop and crawl all the way down. Still made the trip in 12 hours 🤣it was a classic case of being arrogant and thinking I didn't need all that climbing crap (I should have known better I've been climbing for nearly 30 years)

Thanks for watching! Anywhere from mid-June to mid-September without encountering too much snow. I'm sure it's also possible in May and October but with the chance of some snow higher up. Hope you go for it!
