Nutrition is discussed by most people, but it is not clear that many people really know what it means. However, nutrition has more power to create and restore health than all the pills and
procedures put together. Professional medical institutions must take this science seriously, offer it in medical school training and participate in helping medical professionals and clinics establish programs and strategies to deliver this message. Anything less is unacceptable.
T. Colin Campbell, PhD, is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University, and the author (with son and co-author Thomas Campbell II, MD) of The China Study, the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted with startling implications for diet, weight loss, and long-term health. He was trained at Cornell (MS, Ph.D) and MIT (Research Associate) in nutrition, biochemistry, and toxicology. Since 1983, he has been the director of the Nutrition and Cancer Program Project (Collaborative Project with Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences China Cancer Institute, and the University of Oxford). He has authored over 300 research papers, and is the recipient of a number of awards, both in research and citizenship.
Spoiler alert: technical problems (camera malfunction) intervened in the second half of this video.

What a Strong voice for a 80 year old man~ I didn't stop eating meat for health reason, I just saw a mother deer shot in leg still trying to cross the road with her off spring- Lost my appetite for meat on that day, about 50yrs ago. Happens, however, I have out lived my relatives and friends, I'm the only one remaining, don't know if that is a reward or punishment

+S Robin My son was eating deer sausage in front of me on Thanksgiving, telling me it is good for you and lean. I disagree with him and he thinks I am nuts. It may be lean but it is still meat. He hunts every year and is teaching his stepdaughter to hunt. She is 15 and has gotten two deer already. It is NOT for me. I love animals and can no longer eat them. When my husband cooks meat, the smell makes me sick. I know I am healthier because I am a vegan. I sure feel better. I just got started but I am following the Starch Solution, by Dr. John McDougall and I feel good. Your story is compelling and I can see how that would turn you off meat forever. So sad to see that.

I feel the same Bernie. It hurts me so bad to see animals suffering. They suffer so much in the factory farms. I can no longer be a part of it by eating meat. Now I need to figure out how to feed my rescued pets. They have to eat meat. Not sure what to do there.

I don't feel disgust for people who eat meat; my whole family eats meat. But I do feel nauseated when my husband cooks it. It smells so bad to me now. Everyone has to find their own path. Of course, I wish everyone would become vegan, it would save the planet. But from what I have read, the vegan movement is slowly catching on. Even some fast food restaurants are starting to serve a vegan or vegetarian choice.

+petmom ful Recently saw a tweet link to an article ,a couple took their ailing cat to the vet for diagnoses. They were veg. and was feeding the cat the same diet. The vet told them to get the animal on a protein/fat etc diet. Anyone can search and see the requirements for animals to be healthy. I 'm not a rescue person, just have restored stray cats that show up at my place over the years, from repairing tears to getting them back to health, but the humane society takes them, so they get their shots, wormed, and fixed, which I can't afford. I have a stray on the property now, she was thin as a blade, now she is a muscle machine and about ready for the next step. I feed boiled, chicken, brewer's yeast, along with store food with minerals and vits for cats. Like you, petmom, I can't stand the smell of meat cooking, but, gotta do what needs to be done to get meat on the bones fast as possible, and protein, and a bit of fat, is getting the job done.

+Calvin Leman I started eating the McDougall plan about 3 weeks ago, and I feel very energetic. I am 60. However, I have chronic pain in my neck after 2 fusions and I am hoping this diet will ease my pain. It may be arthritis, doctors don't seem to know. I don't know if it will help my pain, but I know I have to stay on this plan to be healthy. I also love these guys and the diet they promote. My family thinks I am nuts, but I don't care. My husband has been very supportive and takes me to the store to get anything I need. He is also enjoying some of the vegan food I make.

My energy has also increased greatly.

Funny how after I gave up dairy and meat that I used to love, now it is very unpleasant looking and the smell of it cooking is very unpleasant. My doctor when I told him that I was switching to a plant based diet rather than poison therapy$$$ became literally enraged-$$$$$$-. I got my purse and drove away. I am really feeling good now. His level of rage really made me frightened of the future because he did not care for me one way or another I pictured a world of police enforcing pouring arsenic into peoples' veins for $250,000 a pop plus the doctors' kickback.

Wow! Good thing you found out that he is not the doctor for you! I was sent to a horrible pain management doctor who wanted me to do all kinds of painful things. When I refused, he got very angry, said I was listening to the wrong people, told me I needed a shrink, I had an anger problem, and had cut myself off from further treatment. He was so rude and angry, I came home and had a panic attack. I quit going to him and wrote him a letter eventually, telling him how horrible he had been to me, and how I was so very much better on my whole foods, plant based diet.

T. Colin Campbell has made a career of challenging the conventional wisdom around nutrition, and The China Study is the culmination of his work. His integrity, brilliance, and unflinching courage shine through every page. The main point of this book is that most nutritional studies that we hear about in the media are poorly constructed because of what the author terms "scientific reductionism." That is, they attempt to pin down the effects of a single nutrient in isolation from all other aspects of diet and lifestyle. Campbell's research, which he describes in a very accessible and engaging fashion, has two tremendous advantages over the typical nutritional study. First, there is the China Study itself - a massive series of snapshots of the relationship between diet and disease in over 100 villages all over China. The rates of disease differ greatly from region to region, and Campbell and his research partners (including some of the most distinguished scholars and epidemiologists in the world) carefully correlated these differences with the varying diets of the communities. The second amazing part of Campbell's research method is his refusal to accept any finding without taking it back to his lab and finding out how exactly it works. In other words, we discover in The China Study not only in what way, but precisely how, the foods we eat can either promote or compromise our health. The final section leaves no sacred cow standing, and names names! From the food industry, to the government, to academia, Campbell calmly reports on a cover-up of nutritional truth so widespread and insidious that all citizens should be enraged.
@sdushdiu
@sdushdiu 9 жыл бұрын
Actually, as Campbell himself says, the China Study was not an 'end point' but simply a very substantial step in a larger process that enabled substantial subsequent advancements insofar as it verified various suspicions and reinforced further avenues for investigation.

I don't think eating vegetarian is any better than meat. What matters to me is the variety and how the plants are grown. If I were a farmer I wouldn't even consider anything other than forest farming. The variety of plants and aggregate effect of self-fertilization from the biomass that is not eaten, as well as the genetic diversity that deters pests and diseases, cannot be done with conventional farming. Who said food has to be sold in separate packages, just give me a combo of forest farmed food and I'm happy. It's just food, I'm not so picky.

I admire T. Colin Campbell, and I was touched about the support received from the society in Hawaii. But one thing I want to clear up- Dr. Campbell said he thought most vegans have a 30% fat ratio and eat lots of processed food, but I don't know where he got this information- most vegans I know including me are either 80-10-10 with 10% max calories from fat, or they are mostly raw except for some potatoes and rice. i.e. mostly whole food and mostly raw. Also, vegetarians have just as many processed food options as vegans and in fact more (including the ones with cheese), and they eat cheese outright, so how does this make them more likely to have a lower percentage of calories from fat? Also, the National Cancer Institute just reported a study that shows that vegans have lower rates of cancer than vegetarians and of course meat eaters too.

Allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment. The fact remains that many, if not most, of those you mention have adopted some faddist variation of the larger message promulgated by folks like C. Esselstyn, T.Colin Campbell, J. McDougall or the research summaries presented by M. Greger at Nuritionfactsdotorg. Instead they follow various faddist vegan regimens like those you mention. And unfortunately there is little (or No) focus focus on a COMPLETE and BALANCED whole plant food regimen. Instead the majority of the diet regimens you mention are pushed by self-annointed online gurus pushing isolated nutrients, delivery methods, and/or attitude - be it the banana or fruit diet, or the 'it must be raw' fallacy, smoothies, or even juicing, or the this or that superfood fad, etc. Simply adopting the label "vegetarian" or "vegan" is NO assurance that the various food choices are complete and balanced (or even whole! - witness juicing and other processed junk food sold at the mis-named so called 'health food stores!), and are thus optimal or even healthier except that they are not eating as much animal based food. Instead, many adopt a label and then think they can eat whatever it is they imagine is healthy as long as it conforms to the constraints of the label. The problem is that the practical solution is not simply adapting a label as they remain focused on isolated nutrients or 'superfoods' or cleanses or some new fad de jour. There is more to optimal health then simply adopting a make it up as you go regimen with a fancy marketing label. And UNfortunately, the 'vegan' community is as subject to make it up as you go emotionally based incomplete, unbalanced fads as are the the folks following various Atkins approaches and other trendy omnivore approaches. IMO, its a shame more seem to be attracted to personality based online marketing gurus than to the message of folks like C. Esselstyn, T. Colin Campbell, J. McDougall and the research summaries of M. Greger at Nutitionfactsdotorg.

Plant-based Christian I hope their reason for adopting the 'philosophy' is one of socio-religio-political philosophy, as their nutritional benefit will be anything but optimal.. We really need a new term that distinguishes between those advocating a complete balanced whole plant low sugar low fat no meat, dairy, egg or oil optimal nutritional regimen and those myriad folks for whom faddist belief and politics take precedence over vetted science.

The animals you're consuming for nutrition are simply a middleman with all the bad side effects. Essentially, we need the nutrition from the plants that the animals are eating. Cut the middleman out and get your nutrition directly from the source, the plants. Look at what nutrients are in that plants based foods you're consuming for endurance and get it directly from plants. IMO, you'll gain endurance.

@vshvideo What Dr Campbell claims is that too much protein kickstarts cancer, yet DrJoel Wallach says you should eat between 6-12 eggs per day,which is lots of protein. So who is right and who is right,they both contradict each other, what shoule we do?, avoid protein or increase it

Please go to Dr. Michael Greger who wrote How Not to Die and has thousands of videos on you tube. He supports a plant protein based diet with much scientific data. Look up his video on eggs and you will have your answer.

Thanks for your answer,i since learnt all about it,protein is essential to build veins arteries muscles etc,its the way the eggs are cooked that causes problems,like frying them.Raw or poached is great.

Sound quality very poor. Also VSH needs to use better camera to film in HD.

Yes but getting these videos produced to professional standards is expensive. Most community groups like VSH simply can't afford it. I am just grateful that they have made these lectures available to the rest of us, free of charge.

***** Tom, a suggestion that VSH should improve the video quality is not a slight at VSH, or a show of ingratitude for the great information they are providing. I think it is safe to assume that VSH posts these videos to help distribute information on the benefits of a plant-based diet. It is not offensive to point out that videos wherein one cannot hear large portions of the lectures is not furthering their goal of disseminating this vital information.

MissPalmtree2012 No, I wasn't attacking Sudh or suggesting that he was offensive - I was just pointing out that we should be mindful of the challenges faced by bodies like VSH .

Spoiler alert: technical problems (camera malfunction) intervened in the second half of this video. I apologize for this but the last half of the video was recorded by a zoomed camera in the back of the room and a wireless mike that picked up RF and room noise. The alternative here was no video at all.

@@azmrhaze yea they say we used to get it from water but a study i seen on vegan indians showed that although they got some b12 they werent getting anywhere enough to modulate there homocysteine and methamalonic acid levels and theres no studies on b12 on organic unwashed food, also if you eat alot of fruit which is hydrating you drink half as much water, so its all kinda debunked and it seems like naturally we get our b12 from animal products, im onto iodine atm, the more i research, the less faith i have in veganism

Even if I ignore all the evidence that it is optimal for health and athletic performance, I would still be so proud of not being a contributor to animal suffering and environment damage caused by animals farming. Not just so proud but way more satisfied about living...

Campbell's vegan bible has long been successfully debunked by Denise Minger (ex-vegan) and others but vegans live in perceptual denial of anything that contradicts their beliefs.
