Your 1 of the only prep stedders I watch, not just because you know your stuff, but i love your scriptures...Freeze dryers are so expensive. I wish I could afford one I'm in a small apartment, so it's really hard, my family when I started saving and preserving food a yr ago my family thought i was crazy. I know that dollar tree has freeze dried bananas, strawberries, nuts friuts, ECT. They taste amazing and they r organic nothing added. I'm just freezing right now. I don't have a car or dresser right now..i try to sell all my antiques & boutique items, designer clothes heels ECT. I use a bucket to catch as much rain water as possible, because the hard water & the chlorine they e added taste so gross..ty for everything u share..

If you haven't already, look into a dehydrator, it's not as good as a freezer dryer but you can get one so much cheaper and it works to preserve just as well with less space used than canning :)

It's been a minute girl!!! Glad to see you back. Freeze drying is something I've been interested in for a while, not so much after the SHTF scenario but as a really good approach for filling the homesteading pantry in general. It just hasn't been fitting in the recent budget. Try drying heavy cream. It's amazing and not discernable from fresh at all, plus shelf stable forever! Again, happy to see your smiling face :-) and hope you've been healthy....blessings!

I bit the bullet and bought our freeze dryer earlier this year - it was a pricey spend, but definitely worth it. I calculated out if I were to buy commercially freeze dried food (quality stuff, not the cheap stuff since I'm picky) how many loads would I need to do to break even on cost of the machine, the food, oil, bags, and the O2 absorbers. It worked out to 45 loads, and everything I'm freeze drying is local, and organic and/or pastured. I just wrapped up our 31st load and will be putting in our next batch before I go to bed tonight. By end of November, the machine will have paid for itself!

First,,,thanks for all your videos. I've been freeze drying for almost two years. Garden produce, fruit trees, raw meats, eggs from our chickens, and also cooked foods like casseroles, soups, stews, and chili are being processed and stored. We have nearly a full year of food for two stored and stacked in covered bins and we keep adding to it. The freeze dryer has now paid for itself. While we still can foods, I STRONGLY recommend this food storage process.

Mine is 5 years old and I can't get parts and very little help. So if you get one be sure to invest in parts for the machine. I love it and have saved so much money with being able to freeze dry my foods and leftovers to use later.

Not to dissuade anyone, but if you are considering this, a new medium Harvest Right freeze dryer with Premiere pump (like the one pictured here) will cost more like $4,000 when you add in the sturdy table, and accessories like extra Mylar bags, extra pump oil, silicone mats or parchment for the trays, extra trays so you can prep one batch while freezing another, tray dividers, food scale, moisture meter, etc. I know this because I just took delivery of one a couple of weeks ago. I still believe it is a worthwhile investment, but only if you use it constantly and wisely. Try to find foods with the same approximate moisture content, try to buy food on sale when it is about to expire, and then freeze dry it to lock in the freshness and the low cost.

We have gone through all these steps and now I’m not very confident placing these meats into Plastic or Mylar storage bags for long term storage. Pros and cons on moisture packs and/ or oxygen absorbers etc is also HUGE! Please do a video showing the packaging of oily food like Beef roasts, Boston butt roast, Beef tenderloin, Chicken, fish, etc.

I Christa, glad to see you back. I love my Freeze Dryer I finally bought earlier this summer and have been preserving all garden veggies (tomato canned into sauce), eggs, cheeses, yogurt, sour cream, fruits, herbs. I can't believe I didn't buy it before. Typically 2-3 batches per week. Freeze drying maintains 97% all enzymes, nutrients and lasts 15-30 yrs depending on food. The heat from canning loses 30-20% of nutrients (if fresh and processed quickly) and then continues to loose nutrients 5 to 20 percent per year. Now that I have a freeze dryer I no longer dehydrate as it loses the most nutrients compared to freeze dried, canned or frozen.

You have a great video and good advice. It seems to me that freeze dried foods are more suitable for backpacking than a stable home environment. The cost of the machine, electricity, and the supplies would be cost prohibitive. You can buy (or make)an awful lot of canned food for $5000 or $6000. After all, if a disaster last for more than a year or two, you should start growing your own food.

Hey there- Love the video- we got a FD at the beginning of this year LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Definitely a smart investment the ways things are heading. Highly recommend the investment- no more waste of leftovers, taking advantage of meat mark downs and sales is an awesome way to say money. We do also pressure can and dehydrate, however the FD has been a GAME CHANGER for sure. QUESTION- i noticed you had artichoke hearts in the FD- were they marinated? If yes, did you rinse or pour hot water over to remove as much oil as possible? Do they FD well? TY Christa

Got ours about a month ago and LOVE IT. We've had it pretty much running non stop since. We've now got bags and jars everywhere. We got a large size and even with those many 5 tray loads We've only had 2 or 3 trays that messed up and I think that was inexperience. And we've done everything from chicken broth to peas and corn to roast beef and shrimp. Including pasta sauce and sliced tomatoes which are incredible. And if you have extra eggs you can whip up whole eggs and just pour them into a tray and shove them into the Freeze Dryer. They rehydrate perfectly and make lovely scrambled eggs and omelets or use them in your baking. You can make your own powdered milk and powdered broth, stock, or bone broth. Freeze dryers are a fantastic investment if you are tired of paying the store bought price for Freeze dryed food. I've even Freeze dried left overs and chili that just needs water added.
