Fell down a rabbit hole of your videos. You do such a great job of presenting all the information in an easy to understand way with out all the fluff some others do. Thanks again for a great video.

Just found your channel, have mostly been a street photographer using a 50 and a 28, and am now looking to get into shooting my friends' bands. This is awesome, thank you.

Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I'm so glad you're here! Having both a 50 and 28 prime is going to be perfect for getting started with your friends' bands!! Can't wait to see what you create!! Feel free to share your IG in a link - I'd love to see your work!

I agree with you on the 50mm. I see so many people all saying a 70-200 2.8 is their go to concert lens but a fast 50 gives me more light and in most venues it is a very workable range.

My 50mm is always in my bag as a fool proof, catch all, easy fix lens - if that makes sense. I bring it everywhere with me because it'll help me out if all my other lenses are struggling. I shoot the majority of my concerts with my 24-70 2.8 but every time I use the 50mm I still absolutely love it. 📸💖

My kit is the 16-35,35,50,85,70-200 f/1.4 - 2.8 that's all I will ever need. Your advice is spot on, take your time and get into things before committing lots of money, your lenses are the most important thing, but so many folk get wrapped up in the best camera without researching lenses.

What a beautiful range!! You're right - that's all you're ever gonna need (unless you start shooting wildlife or stadium sports, haha). Thank you for your kind words - I think you nailed what I was hoping my best tip that I shared would be: hold up and buy what you NEED, not what you WANT. I love gear, getting new gear, unboxing new gear...but it's so unnecessary for the most part...and then it stacks up and gets dusty and goes unused. Wouldn't it be nice if lenses were cheap and we could just buy whatever we want?? 😏😂

I think i just fell in love 😍(respectfully), where have I been?! I wish I could have listened to you before dumping all my savings on gear i barely use 😅but it is good to learn from mistakes as well. Great video, looking fwd to watch more!

85mm are great & affordable! If you're shooting a tiny venue where you're 2 feet from the performer a wide and fast lens, 35mm or wider is ideal. But ultimately, the best lens for concerts is a 135mm f/1.8. It has the length and the speed. Yes they can be heavy and expensive but SO worth it! It's what I mostly use now and am upset with myself it took me so long to finally get one.

good advice though I wouldn't be afraid to use the kit lens starting out especially at the wider end as most are only about half a stop slower than a 28 2.8

That's very true! But I tend to have a lot of individuals showing me "zoomed" photos and wondering why they're so dark, and it's because they're using the longest distance on their kit zoom lens (which often is around f6ish). Personally, I just think it's harder to learn and practice your eye in concert photography if you're constantly changing your aperture and don't have that fast of a lens. Definitely doable and not a problem for a lot of people, but maybe I'm just picky and love my primes haha. Love your insight, Neil! Thank you for the comment!!

Timeless advice for any photographer! Going straight for a "nifty fifty" is the best shortcut ever when money is tight. And upgrading to an 85mm later on is very sound advice! Thank you for getting straight to the info and for the caution about getting DX lenses if you might buy an FX body in the future. P.S. Missing the cat!

Thank you so much!! I appreciate your kind & supportive comment!!! P.S. About the cat, I'm sure she'll pop in the next video. The birds weren't out and about in the backyard so she had no interest being in the window the day I recorded this. 😹

I got into photography in the last great years of film (late '90s) and feel a bit of nostalgia when I only had 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 and 80-200 f/4-5.6 kit lenses, a few rolls of Fuji Velvia and a decent tripod. As I acquired more gear the decision making about what to take out for the day (I used to be a cruise ship musician so I'd explore the ports all day, every day) started to get in the way. Sometimes fewer choices leads to better creativity or problem solving.
@BostonSchulz7 ай бұрын
Ah! I love this perspective so much, Eric!! I completely agree. Having primes can limit you and force you to be MORE creative. And when I travel, I only bring one lens with me so I have to capture as-is and create a unique shot, vs swap out lenses, zoom, set up, focus etc. Having limited lenses will make you focus more on the composition and be much less daunting overall. I love it - thank you so much for sharing & commenting!!

Shooting on Nikon, my kit for concerts is… Nikkor 50mm 1.8 S Nikkor 20mm 1.8 S Tamron 35-150mm 2-2.8 In the past, I shot on Fujifilm and used: XF 18mm f1.4 XF 33mm f1.4 XF 90mm f2

I love prime and really miss shooting with them (I'll have to bring them back out!!). You got a good range and variety!
@sonderbassАй бұрын
@ I prefer primes personally, and they suit the venues I shoot in! Obviously not ideal to switch lenses constantly, but I have the opportunity to capture the entire event at most venues I shoot... So I don’t mind taking my time and making a lens switch here and there. That said, the tamron is a freaking work horse of a lens. The only time I take the 50 out now is when the room is very dark or I’m taking an artist portraits
@BostonSchulzАй бұрын
@@sonderbass That's how I feel about my 70-200, it's a workhorse and I can practically use it anywhere. And if I'm too close, I can run farther back as needed. :)

Such a useful video thank you so much! I'm just starting out and lucky enough to be shooting some gigs on a tour soon. The venues are pretty small so will be quite close to the singer / band. So you recommend the fixed 50mm? I'm worried fixed won't give me options to change things up. Or do you recommend a smaller mm? I'll be touring with the artist possibly again end of November if all goes well and she'll be supporting a band at much larger venues so would need a second lens perhaps? Sorry for all the questions. Ps love your work :)
@BostonSchulz3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for watching & commenting - and your kind words!!! I worked with the 50mm 1.8 for roughly two years before I invested in other lenses. Having a prime forces you to really work on your eye/vision and getting creative with your images. It is definitely more difficult, but I recommend it due to it forces you to learn with a boundary. If you have a crop sensor camera, I actually love the 35 1.8 and that might be a better choice! Both are fairly low cost, so you could potentially get both and it gives you opportunity to switch. Depends on your budget, honestly!!
