I am often disappointed too, to be honest. Not because of the coins, but when I am in a position in which I'm sure to last a few more minutes, it's disappointing when the rest just dies for seemingly no reason. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's more fun when it gets down to the wire! But certainly it will more and more often, as the noviced players will probably give up, and the advanced players will get better.

The coin system goes as follows: your coins+chest coins if you win , then adds a number based off of your finishing position, then doubles your coin count for starting the match as small Mario (even if you end in 35th, you’ll still get a coin double)

Quick little note: The NES Joycon (and the wireless SNES controller) works with the game, you can cycle targets with the R button on the Joycon rail and use the roulette with L. No clue if it's in stock and if it's anything like when I ordered the SNES controller a few months back by the time it would arrive no one would probably care about the game anymore but if an NES player wants a more natural controller there is that option

As pointed by someone above, the more coins people have, the more likely they'll spend on the roulette. So if it's down to 2v2 and the other guy keep using the item box to stay alive, he'll run out of coins by the time he lost and kosmic got none of it. The trick here is to score KO against people before they managed to empty their pocket (mostly done in the early-mid games by forcing them to fall off a pit via a surprise enemy spawn)
