I always watch back the games I lost. It helps me look at my own game and realize my own mistakes better. It still doesn't help me with the general concepts like map awareness or ganks or which objectives should we have taken first but it helps a lot in terms of the little mistakes that might add up.

@@plontschable In the short term it'll feel that way, but over the long term you'll gain thousands of points of MMR. Keep in mind there's people who have played dota for 10 years and are still hardstuck in crusader, it's because those people never bother to reflect on what went wrong and how to get better.

I strongly agree at 5:48. I teach statistics ang probability in college. What is the chance that you will get a heads when you toss a coin? 50% But if you toss 20 times, it's not gonna be 10 heads - 10 tails, instead it'll be 14-7, or 5-15. But toss 300 times, you will have 140-160 or 158-142, etc. Similarly, in the long run, you will be converged to your real mmr. So you gain mmr not by having good teammates, you gain mmr by polishing your skills, learning new skills, and unlearning bad habits.

I remember when I lost like 10 games in a row a few months back, and I decided to check all of those games and see what I could do better, and I started to notice little things, where I should be, where i can get farm, avoiding tfs, putting wards for myself, telling to my hc where was the heroe who would kill him(axe lc), being clear where is the hero who kills me, roshan timings, power runes (dd or arcane), etc and from those replays i started to have all of that in mind since I didn't wanted to lose again for the same reason, guess what more than 30 games after my loss strike and only 5 loses.

Figuring out when you're the 30% contribution or the 13% contribution is something I struggle with because often times teammates/opponents will tell you you're horrible regardless of the truth of it.
@ZQuixotix2 жыл бұрын
For sure, digging through the useless flaming and trying to objectively look at whether it's valid criticism or not is rough. I think that's where replay analysis/coaching is helpful to let you know what you are doing right or wrong. I think until you have a good understanding of the game, it's a little hard to do yourself. Though the way I approached, I would take my best guess of whether I thought I was the 30% or not, and go off of that. If I'm right, if I'm the 30%, then I'll climb. If I don't climb after a bit, I am forced to re-evaluate that perhaps I'm lower down
@JewTube0015 ай бұрын
I don't think you can learn much from most teammates tbh, most of them are either going to be at your level or worse, and even if they're better than you they might be blaming you by default. Ideally you'll have some kind of mentor or coach who's much higher level tell you what's wrong instead of a random peer at your own level.

Best advice I ever heard is 25% of your games are auto loss, 25 auto win, and then the other 50% the way you individually play is the main factor in if you win or lose the game. When you recognize the 1 in 4 that's an auto loss you just have to accept it and not let it get you upset. The games that your play caused the win or loss you have to learn from it. It could easily be 33 33 33 as well. Either way it's the same mentality.

The most PMA video about ranking in DOTA, just to share, I usually play with my friends like we are always a 5 man team but we rarely play ranked because we are afraid of encountering smurfs and those boosters, we now play unranked because there's no pressure that we will lose something, we always enjoy it especially when we win. Honestly, I always have the attitude of blaming a team mate because he cannot do his job properly while I look to myself ( im a support only role ) that I'm doing my best to do my job but then again, we will still lose. That's when I like the point when you talk about focusing on winning is not productive and there are games that are really uncontrollable. Im on guardian rank and I would say that since Im not a hardcore dota player, I will just continue playing unranked with my team mates because I really lost hope in gaining or reaching a higher mmr since I also do not play solo. Thanks for your video, Zach. I miss your streams and I literally miss your streaming since I live on the other side of the earth LOL.

Ok maybe when I win, the above mentioned legends join in my opponent. But then the frequency is still 50%.. basically 50% win rate is fixed. It’s really frustrating, after supporting my safe lane or offlaner for 20-30 mins, they get DCed or even better, they don’t know when to join fight when to push when to farm, HOW to farm. If opponents are dead all 5, my carries run back to our jungle and farm more. If I am carry, my support’s life time saving Gold goes to Scepter/Blink/bot. MMR in team games is not an indication of individual skill. Now, regarding Dota 2 it's pretty obvious that if you have a winning streak you will soon get a big losing streak. Your individual skill will not change but the members of your team will be either beginners, feeders or griefers. Why do you think that sometimes, the queue takes like 5 minutes? If it would be only matchmaking based on mmr, you will get an instant match every time. There are hidden statistics which we don't know and a multi-million company has ways to control and make money out of their systems.

I quit playing dota2 in 2016 because all of my games near 4500mmr were stomps, totally one-sided matches, easy win or crushing loss, nothing in between. I got back a month ago and first 20-25 matches were great, nice back and forth games but then the stomps returned. The next ~50 matches I played were sad pictures when one team had zero chances. I dont know what and who to blame, but I think there is some sort of PBMM (performance-based MM) sprinkled into SBMM (skill-based MM), to give some players pity-wins/dragdown-losses.
@ItsPhilH2 жыл бұрын
As someone who came to Dota 2 last year (after a hiatus from being a HoN player like 10 years ago) and has climbed from literally 10 MMR up into the 600 - 700 range my thoughts on this are as follows: - Expecting every player to make their 20% contribution and not actively and consistently picking up their slack is an act of griefing yourself out of wins. I will consistently have the highest support gold spend regardless of whether I am pos 4 or 5, as so often the other support player simply won't buy support items until the cores have cried for 15 minutes straight about no vision etc. - You have to hard counter your biggest issue on the enemy team. Every single time. Unless you're partied, you can't rely on your cores to get the necessary items to shut down the smurf/pubstomp hero etc. It's one of the reasons I've started maining Hoodwink as her kit is so effective on it's own that items only enhance my impact, rather than defining it. For that reason, I can be the one who gets Orchid when we're against a mid Invoker or QoP that has started running away with the game, or I can rush an Ethereal Blade in order to solo kill the aggressively roaming Windranger whose constantly out of position; or scurry into the backlines and insta burst the glass cannon Sniper or Drow that is standing way in the back melting my whole team. - The majority of my deaths in any given game are unnecessary. I'm sure we've all made the correlation that fewer deaths = more wins, but this is more about the lessons that each of our deaths teach us. Is it as simple as positioning? (Not playing behind wards or creep vision) Or is our inability to apply a basic dispel through a neutral item or Euls/Lotus Orb/BKB etc. the reason we're dying (Skywrath + Atos or Storm Spirit + Orchid etc.) When I started framing my thoughts around a game through this lens, I found I was kiting powerful cores during key team fights which my team in turn were winning, due to me not being insta gimped and the fight quickly turning into a 4v5. - Look at the minimap as often as possible. As a pos 4 or 5, I have so often been freely given objectives or one of my cores have because the enemy is too busy trying to force a teamfight on the opposite side of the map while I or a core are pushing out what was a dead lane at the time. Through a combination of decent warding and an awareness of how many enemies are showing on the minimap - you're freely given information as to whether you or a core can safely continue to claim an objective or whether you need to back off. When it's a teammate, you just need to keep open lines of communication as to who is showing, when you see someone teleporting etc. - Dota+ is a net positive MMR investment. Being able to avoid players who are huge ragers or obvious throwers/item breakers etc. in the short term raises your MMR, as for the game they're on your team and you lose, you're likely to get at least one game against them to win and offset it (and often I've gotten 3 or 4 games against them that's boosted my own rank) in the same session. This quickly puts the forced 50/50 fallacy to bed, as it's obvious they're the ones majorly impacting the game (just not in their favour) and you're simply playing the system with the advantage you're given to raise your rank. - When playing core roles in low ELO, Lotus Orb is ridiculously high value. Spell casters just continue to fire single target spells at you regardless of the activation state of Lotus. My favourite is playing pos 3 Clockwerk and ulting onto a pos 2 Zeus, popping cogs and Lotus and watching him panic burst himself to death. I'm by no means perfect and still have a long way to go in my own game (consistent rotation timing early game, exploiting core item power spikes etc.) but it's a journey and these are the things I've found that have chalked up more wins in the match feed lately. Love your work Zach, conversations like this are really important to keep us all accountable for how we're playing the game, rather than focussing on others.

I completely disagree the first sentence, that your team holds you back, but I don't disagree completely with the second one, but I think valve's system forces you to not win more than 70% of your games, once I think I'm just not good enough to beat the enemy team when they got a guy that is much better than me, and when I'm in a winstreak the matchmaking system does that, and we all know. It's not impossible to get better though, just valve things; couter strike is a good example how valve does not do well with matchmaking

edit: nvm he addressed some of this issue, typed all these 3 minutes in Here's what I believe 40% of the games you lose no matter what 40% of the games you win no matter what and 20% boils down to your skill. Once you accept that you'll be able to climb. Just to name a few random pro players, ponlo has 53.18% WR & Pablo has 52.81% WR as of this post. Factoring that in, let's just say you're averaging 60% WR and that's still 4 LOSSES every 10 games. And a 60% WR would give you only +30/20 PER 10 games. So it's really a grind, just get your mental right and not play tilted or give up easily & that 20% will favor you more so. Also the timing you're queue'ing matters too. Some timing you just tend to win more games eg. evening time on weekdays and some timing you tend to lose more eg. after 2AM of your region. I've friends who thinks that queue'ing when there's less kids eg. midnight would give them better games but no, not taking a shot at any but those that plays at like 2AM tend to be weirdos. It's like trading/poker, sometimes you just gotta fold. Felt like going for more games despite having a lose streak and slightly tilted? Plus it's like wee hours where all the normal humans goes to bed already? Just go play some custom or unranked! Also similarly to poker/trading, you must accept the spread. Sometimes your year to date profit and loss is like $7,500 and then a bad week it went down to $5,400, there will be swings. A normal week and you'll be back. Just remember probability has no memory. Think from their perspective, those people are still playing at 2am maybe because they were losing since 8PM and they're telling themselves (I'll stop when I win or breakeven). TL;DR, yeah luck is a huge factor but when both side's even (that 20% of games). Playing well actually will be a factor for that juicy +30/20.

@pt83064 ай бұрын
This isn't really a roast, but one of the most important things you should read into when it comes to bias is Negativity Bias, which has been studied in-depth by psychologists for decades. Basically, humans are more emotionally affected by negative experiences compared to positive ones. This is why negative news headlines are so common. Have you ever gone through a day where people compliment you multiple times, but someone says something mean to you, and you spend the rest of the day upset about the mean thing, despite receiving more praise than criticism over the course of the day? We might have 15 games where we make mistakes, but a good teammate carries us, and then 1 game where our carry feeds constantly and the enemy Pudge gets fat, lands every hook, and they win at the 20 minute mark. Because of negativity bias, we will very often forget the 15 good games and remember the 1 horrible game. If this pattern of negative emotional experiences continues for a long time (maybe a few months), it's easy to get into a mindset where all we can remember is bad games ruined by stupid teammates because we have forgotten the good ones, which gives us a false perception that we are actually being constantly dragged down by bad teammates and that the whole MMR system is completely rigged. The best way to combat this is probably to regain perspective by looking at our actual statistics. Look over your previous games, look how many actual wins you have gotten, and watch replays of some of them to understand why you won. Did your teammates contribute? Most likely yes! Also, you say that a streak of wins followed by a streak of losses is a sign of inconsistency, like someone will play well and then play badly, etc. I disagree. It makes a lot more sense for inconsistency to result in a more random Win/Loss distribution, because if someone is inconsistent it is usually far more random when they do well or not, especially in a game like Dota where the hero match ups are different per game, and playing well requires good fundamentals in a wide variety of situations, rather than repeating bad habits which will mostly only pay off at random depending on opponents (ward placements come to mind). If you're hitting a streak of wins then a streak of losses, most likely you're at your correct MMR level already - you're winning, so you're getting better opponents, then those better opponents beat you consistently because of your bad habits, so you go back down. This is a textbook example of "bouncing" around your true skill level. MMR systems have no real mechanism for maintaining a steady skill level, you can only go up or down, so everyone, at every level, will naturally "bounce" around their actual skill level as they win games, then go up, then lose games, and go back down.

I believe there might be a system in place that determines the skill level of players based on their account data. This system could classify players as good, really good, bad, really bad, or average. The matchmaking process would then create balanced matches. For instance, it might assemble a team with one really good player, three really bad players, and one average player to play against a team with four average players and one bad player. However, when a team ends up with three really bad players, they face a significant disadvantage. These players often lack a proper understanding of how to play Dota, focusing solely on powering up their heroes rather than engaging in team dynamics.

And as a Pos 4/5 my Impact is Limited. I get a lot of Games where my Carrey does nothing. Or my Pos 5 will not put out a single ward.... its just frustrating. My behavior Score is Always 10000. I think the only Chance to get Out of Herold is to find a group and Always Play together. Communication is Key in this Game. And you got almost none communication in random ranked Matches.

It's on you for not adding good players you played with. I have dozens of unknown friends I added from guardian up to ancient that I added this way. If I felt they are good and we won the game, I add them. They usually accept if they think you also played well.

in lower bracket your team have little to no knowledge of the game , you have to pick core whether offlane,mid or carry and start from there .

Stayed away from dota for 2 years...... Was at 3.6 k And this year I got back to the game and recalibrated and I fell down to 2.3k ... And the thing that makes me sad about this is.... My old mmr I didn't actually push it.... I was straight Calibrated to 3.5 k .... So falling down to 2.3 makes me sad 😂

I highly disagree with you. I noticed a pattern. When I get 3 winstreak I tend to get at least 5 losing streak. I do get 2 back to back wins here and there so that my winrate does not move. But if somehow I manage 3 winrate, bammm 5 losing streak incoming.

Why do people focus on MMR so much? "Lets win back that MMR" why? I like the game and i enjoy getting better and learning something. The MMR is just the indicator if i did learn something or unlearned something else. I think the main problem is that the "feedback" from the game comes with such a delay that its hard to learn something with the reward actually happening. Example: A lot of games get thrown under the enemy offlane T2. Your team wins a fight, pushes in and gets obliterated at the worst possible spot. Happens every second game. I started to beg my team to not push 4v5 into dark map into a insigificant objective. I cross it out on the miimap with the paint option. How many games does that stop me from losing? IDK, the reward is not there. But deep down i am sure that this "move" it is probably worth 500mmr.

50% system is very real in solo que under about 6k mmr or so . Climbed my self from 3k to 7k. And yeah i noticed smurfs in my team, wins in 15 mins are worse than loses. This what makes you quit cause one sided games are trash. If you want to gain mmr dominate 1-3 pos and focus on your game. If you re low rank support change your role now, you will never gain mmr.
@ZQuixotix2 жыл бұрын
Why would a forced 50% system only exist for a certain range though? I mean it could be true, I don't think there's any information from Valve about how matchmaking works. But what would the benefit of only putting it on for a certain range? My own explanation for something like that could be that by 6k, you have a threshold of skill for most players, so you are less likely to notice anything extremely bad about them (skill wise). Whereas below that, people may have really bad laning, but good teamfighting, etc. The skills are super varied but still average to 2k or 4k or whatever. So players are more likely to notice the gaps in another player's skill, or those gaps are going to be punished more heavily when the bad laner goes against the good laner.

@@ZQuixotix Sir without being rude to you, why don't you try to create a low rank account and try to play in SEA server as a support. If you manage to raise your mmr to immortal then people will believe and validate you and your guides. Many players have spoken that the quality of the games we experience nowadays are too toxic and not competitive. It's all about 1-hour neuron-busting won games and/or rigged 15-minute losing games helplessly because you have the griefers.malders. and cancers. It's all about LUCK/RNG nowadays.

Depends how few games you are playing I guess. You do want to play your best, but you probably also need to practice as you go too. You could play unranked for practice when you aren't feeling your best for ranked. Plus, I don't think you need your absolute best performance every game, mainly just need to be good.

Riddle me this batman. This is for LoL but its same MMR system. I was Diamond 3, and I stopped playing for 4 months. (forgot about elo decay) My account got put in platinum 1. Now, my elo should be around Diamond 4-3 I don't have an ego I just play and focus. I got into Promos to Diamond right away 2 times in a row and lost them. Now I lost 7 games in a row. Bad mental? I don't think so. Maybe incredible bad luck. Still, this feels so rigged when it happens to you.

i think most games are decided by mid players losing an impact in the game example afk farming mid and watching mid players gank first 15mins its like a 30% chance to win, add to an offlaner that doesnt play as a tank and exposes a carry which is most of SEA its like a 10% chance to win.
@AnonKar982 жыл бұрын
TRUEEEE, if u have a good mid and a avarege off to tank, and someone to ward and smoke u probably will win
@manongslifestylepassion85392 жыл бұрын
If all players have that WE NEED A TANK mentality then better play CSGO not Dota 2. That's exactly the problem with the majority of the players. They think offlane is a sacrificial core. It's utterly disappointing everytime I see players asking oh WE NEED A BEEFY OFFLANE CORE then they proceed to picking zeus and mirana support heroes. I consider those kind of players as SOCIOPATHS or could be WORST as PSYCHOPATHS.

u dont hear many complaints?dude i have accepted and embraced the broken system so much at the beginning of every game i shout out loud, "is there any smurfs or pros here that can lift this team to victory??" people do go up and down thats why its not rigged, u lose and u win all the time in casinos too does it mean the casino isnt rigged?thats just variance, and variance is the most insidious thing as it convinces players more that its "random" but in truth, and the probabilities is always in the house's favour even if its just a 50.4 % to 49.6% advantage, that 0.8 house edge will destroy u in the end.....even if u go on a super unbelievable hot streak, the extreme of outliers, eventually the power of reversal to the mean will eradicate ur massive run good and advantage at the beginning and

I used to not believe the forced 50% winrate, but I feel it's just too much of a coincidence that you get paired with "not so good" teammates repeatedly after a long winning streak. I agree with the video though that at the end of the day you need to focus on yourself.
@ZQuixotix2 жыл бұрын
I think if a game is going poorly, you're more likely to see such bad teammates though. Whereas when you were winning, their poor choices worked out because you were ahead (or they just had better games so they looked better). Mix that in with the random times you do genuinely get bad teammates, and it makes it seem like it always happens. Not that I can prove it either way, but I think some opportunities are lost to bad luck/matchmaking and some are lost because of ourselves. And it's much easier to see the former, or maybe we don't like to believe the latter. Like you said though, at the end of the day, we just focus on ourselves and then it doesn't even matter if it's rigged or us

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but it doesn’t apply to everyone. Low rank is a swamp that you need to be REALLY talented to get out of. I can hold my own mid against people ranked much higher than me when I play with friends yet can’t coral the toxic nubs I get in herald or guardian. I’m only as good as the lowest skilled member of my team. They bring you down to their level even if you mute them. Spend more time there you’ll see.
@DrVanNostrand012 жыл бұрын
I mean I feel it’s rigged, every time I go on a winning streak a losing streak follows. Win 9 in a row, then win 2 out of ten lol happens too often for it to be a coincidence. Valve needs to match make off of skill and hours.

Hello, I think that your math abouth the equal probability of smurf in your team and in your enemy team is not correct. The game is about 2 teams of 5 players each, your team is you + 4 more guys, you know you are not smurfing so, the probability of smurf in your team is that 1 of the 4 extra guys in your team is smurfing. You don't have this information on the other team, so there are 5 guys who can be smurfing in the other team. Doing the math, is 25% more possible that the smurf is in the enemy team.
