I'm really happy to hear you're enjoying the videos. One correction: I am not a garden guru. Not by a long shot. I'm an electrical and civil engineer, so I just like experimenting and building projects to keep my mind busy, and I'm also an Italian from NJ, so I love playing in the dirt and growing plants. I still have a lot to learn, but I love sharing my experiments, successes and failures with everyone to inspire them!

@@TheMillennialGardener Nah, I'm going with garden guru. You and I are a lot alike. We research everything to death to know every possible way of doing something until there's basically not much left to learn besides experimentation. Hence the engineer. That then qualifies you as a guru after a while. Just FYI. lol

WOW. One of the best teaching/explanation videos I have seen. You are an amazing teacher. You speak slowly and clearly, your camera work is excellent leaving the shot long enough to understand what you are describing. Sometimes a 3 minute video can take 10 minutes to understand as you rewind, rewind, rewind and comment, "How did they get from this point to this point. Did I miss it? Did you see it?" You progress through a process in a clear deliberate manner. Again excellent job. You have a new subscriber.

Dear Millennial Gardner, I'm working in AK but live in TX. We purchased land a few years back and we should start developing our garden plot this fall. It has to get high fenced because of the deer issue. One very appealing quality of this string trellis is that for many gardners, their backs aren't what they use to be. This is a great method to assist the aged in continuing the art of gardening. Thank you

This will make things far easier than pounding stakes into the ground, bending down to tie them and managing the suckers all year as the stakes become overwhelmed by the vines. I will never use staking again for indeterminates as long as I have room on my extensive trellis system. Setting up these trellises was worth every amount of effort! Thanks for watching!

@@TheMillennialGardener It was a great season last year. Unfortunately, we live in an apartment complex and it got out of control but they had great mercy on me and let it all grow seeing as it was producing food. This year I had to limit to determinate tomatoes but we are house shopping. One of my first crops for our new house I will do it again and on a much larger scale! For now I just need to turn my waiting room into a class room. Doing a lot more peppers this year as they don't generally grow very big, perfect for an apartment patio.

I've recently seen the string trellis concept and love the idea. I've been growing tomatoes for decades and use various good support/cages. Lately I've been using tree poles to support my supports because my plants get so big and heavy. I've been trying to figure out how to use my tree poles to create the frame for the string trellis. This video is fabulous and I'm thinking I can modify your system a bit by using the tree poles (drill a small hole in the top center for the airplane wire) and mostly use the rest of your system. Thanks so much for this great video.

Thank you for a craftsman approach. One important feature to add would be to run a copper wire which has been integrated into the overhead cable system into ground. Perhaps at this point another crimp connector from the original on the short slack piece from the loop and down your post to an underground metal stake. Don't want lightning strikes to smoke the posts and make fried green tomatoes! Nice work!

5:27 Tip: the best way to tighten a turnbuckle is to literally turn the buckle itself (hence the name), not the eye at one end ... it's twice as fast because it tightens both ends simultaneously, and doesnt twist the guide wire. if it's snug, you can stick a screwdriver crosswise into the buckle for extra torque. Anyway, great lookin setup ... this will be my 1st year trying vertical trellising, so i'll probably start off easy with 7' t-posts, and top or slide as needed. cheers.

That is going to be a great system for a first year garden. It will work so much better than staking. These string trellises are amazing and revolutionize growing indeterminate tomatoes. Cucumbers germinate in 2-3 days on a heat mat. So do squash and watermelon. I haven't even started my seeds yet because I won't plant them out until mid-April because they hate any nights cooler than 50. They can be started last minute because they grow so fast. It's very different than tomatoes and peppers, which should be started 6-8 weeks in advance.

I fell down the Millennial Gardener rabbit hole when I came across one of your trellising videos and ultimately ended up watching many until I came to this one. I have gained much information from doing so and have a renewed hope this year will be a success because of it so thank you! One question - is there a reason for the hook and additional string at the top or would simply tying a string to the horizonal wire suffice?

you're onto it :) those bookshelf brackets might hold, or not. they're soft/cheap steel. you might want to get the brown clips instead of the clear, as the clear ones dont last long. Really enjoying this podcast as it's not fake enthusiasm, as in many other channels. I prefer to remove all suckers and only have single stem. Cheers.

I also use this system but I wind the string around the stem. I have not used the wire at the top yet but will change that soon. The winding means I don’t need that many clips. Thanks for sharing your setup!
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 4 жыл бұрын
I tried doing that, but I found when the wind blew, it rubbed the strings against the stems and it was cutting into the stems and damaging them. Using the clips, I'm not having this problem. Cutting the stems creates an entry point for disease, so I want to try and keep them healthy.

The whole point of a turnbuckle is to be able to tighten the line when you can’t, or don’t want to, twist the lines. You don’t want to do what you did bc the line will untwist and create slack again. You thigten the line by turning the middle part. One of the hooks is reverse threaded so that when you spin the middle, both hooks are drawn together or pushed apart. Thanks for the sourcing🙂

So the end of the twine is not fastened to the ground at all? It seems the first clip (bottom) is near the end of the twine, correct?

For the T-post method, you can put them 5ft apart, and use 10 ft lengths of 1/2 inch metal EMT conduit. Use PVC t's, I think it has to be the 2 inch, to cap the T post. Slide the conduit into the T's and connect multiple conduit using the conduit connectors, so the pipes don't come out of the t's. This will hold a lot of weight with little sag. Good big tomato plants will cause plenty of sag in a cable, and can cause T post to lean.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 4 жыл бұрын
Problem is EMT conduit is very expensive by comparison. The airplane cable was $40 for a 300 ft spool. It is plenty strong. I harvested hundreds of pounds of tomatoes this season and I had no issues with sag. It's strong stuff.

Hi MG, when you have a long vine that you are going to coil on the ground, do you prune off the leave first? Seems like you might have problem if you you didn't with disease, but I have never previously heard of removing all leaves from a vine and am not sure how many leaves are needed to sustain the plant and support the fruit. Thanks!

If you skip to 2:58, you can copy that setup with some 7 or 8 ft t-posts and a piece of airplane cable or wire. That should give you plenty of height when paired with the double tomato hooks. You don't need to have something as complicated as my setup. You can certainly keep it simple. Anything you can run above to stick the tomato hooks onto will work as long as it gives you enough height.

I use corner posts with tposts in between and tie string to 9 Guage wire. This gives me about a 6 foot high trellis. I basically adapted electric fencing and grape trellis ideas because I already had those items on hand. I plan to get in some of the tomato hooks and plant clips to give them a try.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're going to like the results. If you've never string trellised before, it's a revelation. It's going to surprise you how wind-resistant they are, too, since they bend with the wind.

It's the best way to grow tomatoes that I've found and tried four other methods: staking, caging, tying to a physical trellis and Florida Weave. This is, by far, the best for indeterminates. Great airflow, control and no restrictions on height.

Very interesting. Thanks. But can't figure out what's going on at the top of your 4x4s? Why what looks like shorter pieces of 4x4 coming off the top instead of just mounting your hooks directly into the top of the main, vertical 4x4?

How do you keep the hooks from sliding together to the low point of the aircraft cable? I used this method last year and as my cable sagged (turnbuckle maxed out), the hooks would slide together. Thanks.

@@TheMillennialGardener it would not work for my application. I overwinter my tomatoes. They are already 12-14 ft tall, and fruiting like mad. Like I said I have tried stringing, and it is awesome.... but for two to three year old plants, and for some more than one stem, the way I am now using is way more permanant. Even though I have seen strining done in a green house where the plant was 40 ft, just by lowering the string. The stem looked like ropes on the ground....

I built a trellis from a trampoline cage . When tomatoes out grow their tower I'll hang ropes and tie the tomato main stem to it .I plan on letting the ropes hang and not secure the bottom . I think that will work, if not I'll use some tent stakes .
