I feel like a minor footnote was missed here; Paperball managed to get the original announcer to come back and do some of the lines again in one of their updates over the years. Granted, they don't really have the same energy as the originals, but I respect the dev's going through the effort nonetheless.

Nice to remember how solid of an experience this was. Level design and challenge definitely delivered(except expert 21, fuck that one in particular), and the presentation is totally charming. I do think that the slower physics limiting how much you can really do with it is a bit of a downer, but that’s just a part of standing out I guess. If you’re interested in checking out more monkey ball-style games, I found a very interesting one called Venineth. It’s a purely show-don’t-tell experience where you roll a marble through vast otherworldly landscapes, and alternate between puzzle solving and terrain navigation. The level design, controls, and overall vibes are extremely on point, though there’s a few weird sticking points here and there. Would definitely recommend giving it a shot!

As someone else who adores paperball and is not too big on rolled out (as of playing it last around ~March 2023), I'd love to hear any specific thoughts about it. Especially so since it felt that game was specifically marketed as "were making our game to be similar to the OG monkey balls" and it... just didn't hit it for me much?

I tried the demo during Steam Fest years ago and altought I had fun (the sound desing is so crunchy and good) it didn't really click with me, so I left it for later and bought others indies. Now I guess I will have to buy it on my next opportunity

yeah, I came across this game on the eshop in about the same way you did, and I had a blast with it too. I’m probably going to come back to it soon and finally crack open those Champion levels (and try for those Expert Encore levels, but the later Expert stages are still stumping me lmao). Edit: After nearly 250 deaths (80-90 of which were on Slackline alone lmao), champion is done woooo now for Expert Encore (do I even DARE touch Champion Encore??)

Update: Man, Expert Encore is an awesome level set. I had 31 deaths in Expert in my successful run. I noticed something when doing this, too: there are more “problem stages” and they are more spread out than something like SMB1 Expert where E7 and E9 are far harder than just about anything else in the set. Problem Expert stages for me include E10 (Clock Hands), E21 (Serial Jumps), E22 (Gables), E31 (Razor Blades), E46 (Coiled Cable) and E47 (Relay). Then I get to Expert Encore and these levels kinda wrecked me lmao. Over a hundred deaths on this set alone! The ideas are so creative here. And honestly the best part is the soundtrack: both “Moon” and “Void” did NOT need to go this hard! “Void” in particular perfectly conveys that the game is no longer messing around, especially since that theme isn’t in the Encore stages in the earlier difficulties. Much like you said, the music prevents me from normal frustration on this challenging level set. The requirement of 50 deaths or less to get here is much more fair than the three lives of SMB1: I felt disheartened as a kid that I couldn’t get to Expert Extra let alone Master. Here, though? Really, I might just go for Champion Encore! …seriously, Champion 4 is nonsense though lmaooo

I wonder what you think of neverball. It's an open source game that I've played in my early days of using linux, a long time ago, and I loved it. And since then it got a bunch of awesome levels. The style of gameplay and levels is very, very different than in SMB. It's much more about moving around slowly, most of the time. I played with a mouse, and playing with a joystick may give a different feel to it or the difficulty may change.

ive gone and cleared all the novice levels and i'm seriously hooked, buttery smooth gameplay. great level design. as a complete beginner the onboarding process of learning how to play was seriously clean. great game, great video !

this inspired me to buy the game, ya'know, If the whiny monkey ball fans enjoy this one maybe it's worth picking up, and while it is GOOD, it's camera control and physics don't work well with me. Idk, still fun though. Edit: I don't see how modern monkey ball physics feeling different is bad, but paperball with different physics is just fine, I get their different franchises, but it's nice to see each game in a franchise like monkey ball (with a separate story per-game) as completely different games within a genre.

Banana rumble is great. The ex stages are like smb1 and smb2 but you never played those. They are really challenging but you never gave it a fair chance
