I was advised to diversify my portfolio among several assets such as stocks and bonds since this can protect my inherited portfolio of about $2.5m. I’m used to just buying and holding assets which doesn’t seem applicable to the current rollercoaster market plus inflation is catching up with my portfolio. I would think that a major benefit of dividend investing is that calculating portfolio size needed is not relevant. We don't care about the value of the portfolio. We care about the sustainable income it pays. As you invest you can gradually see the income rise as you invest more and pull the retirement trigger when it's high enough regardless of the market sentiment.
@jcurdrayeric2438 ай бұрын
Calculating the portfolio size needed is very relevant. - How else do you know how much to contribute?
@rogerwheelers43228 ай бұрын
By calculating how much additional income the contributions produce and estimating how that income rises. the capital value will fluctuate up and down over time so the amount of income new additions give you varies. so capital value being high with a market yielding 2% is no worse for retirement than the same portfolio at a different timepoints where the capital value is half and so the yield is 4%. so long as the yield is sustainable in real terms the capital value being half does not matter. its the same income stream at a different moment of low market sentiment vs high market sentiment.

Although there are many of chances in the financial markets, I've learnt enough over the previous few years to be sceptical about that. Knowing where to focus is crucial. Without the right coaching, people are more likely to make errors and lose money.

Dividends are a great thing, but they’re only really effective for passive income when you either have somewheres over 20 to 25 thousand shares of a high yielding stock. Meaning you likely need to have a few hundred thousand if not more invested in it. Re-investing dividends back into the same stock certainly does snowball with compound interest, but you only really start seeing it after 20 years of never stopping and likely needing to add additional money of your own with it….so it’ll be time consuming and costly. The way I see it if you have a million dollars at some point, that’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between 50 to 70 thousand in dividend income
@martingiavarini7 ай бұрын
Like Warren Buffet said, dividends are only good if the business you’re investing into can’t make good use of that capital. So if you’re trying to invest into businesses with actual growth, looking at dividends is a waste of time. Why are you investing into a company if they’re returning capital to you because they think you can make better use if it than they can. There’s only one reason, and it is a place to park your capital to pay you a small return with large established businesses because you aren’t trying to grow your portfolio anymore, but to live off of it. It’s not much different from bond investing.

I like investing in close-end funds that pay monthly dividends. The trick is to hold long term and reinvest the monthly dividends plus buy more shares on a monthly basis or when ever you can afford to. This can be easily done because close-end funds are bought and sold on the stock market just like regular stock. That’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between $50k to $70k in dividend income

Retail and home improvement were some of the hardest-hit sectors during the 2008 crash. We are many years over due for a crash and the country's economic situation is much, much worse than it was in 2007. So, it is reasonable to expect the next crash to be worse, with banks and consumer discretionary (home improvement, retail, entertainment, automobile, cruise lines, airlines, casinos, hotels...) to be some of the hardest-hit sectors. With the inflation we are facing and likely to continue to have in the future, discount places like McDonalds, Burger King, Dollar Store, Dollar Tree...are also being hit hard. Banking is a train wreck. There is huge amount of commercial real estate loans resetting this year. Their interest rates will be increasing, if not more than doubling. There is a massive commercial realestate crash on the horizon. Precious metals and mining, oil and energy, auto parts MIGHT be the right sectors to be in. Although, with a recession, people's energy use might decrease, but it will not stop and many of these companies often pay dividends.

Hi Dividend Bull, I'd love to see a video with your thoughts on some of the Canadian bank stocks BNS and CM. Both have a yield around 7% and have dropped to very fair valuations recently. I've been reading up on them through seeking alpha and most analysts say they are excellent choices right now for many years of income and growth. Would be curious to get your thoughts on this. Dividend Sensei on seeking alpha said this about BNS: "What about BNS dividend's safety? BNS will sometimes freeze its dividend under the command of regulators. But those regulators aren't going to force it to cut its dividend. How can we know? Because BNS was founded in 1832, 191 years ago. It began paying a dividend one year later, in 1833. In 190 years, how often has it missed a dividend payment or cut its dividend? Zero. Not even in the Great Depression, when 9,000 US banks collapsed and our stock market fell 87%, did BNS cut its dividend. Not in the Great Recession, Pandemic, WWI, WWII, a global flu pandemic that wiped out 5% of humanity. Not even in the 1840 Canadian banking panic, the last financial crisis in Canada."

I stopped listening and taking financial advise from these KZbinrs, because at the end of the day, I end up with a bunch of confusing stocks without knowing when to take profit, In reality, all I needed was professional advice to take advantage and make profits.

Is this a good time to buy stocks? I know everyone is saying stocks are at a discount and all, but just how long will It take for us to recover, obviously there are strategies to maneuver in this present market but these strategies doesn't come common to the average folk, or am I better off putting my money elsewhere?

@allenconnor9039 there is no truth to the rumor that "Lisa" was a student of Bernie Madoff 😋 Only a very naive person would believe the apparently fake testimonial and conversation on this thread. Like they say "a fool and their money are soon parted".

Scammers usually make the same set of fatal flaws with their attempts. But they are not intelligent enough to realize it. This thread just screams *scammer alert* BTW...if I can spot the potential scammers this easily then why can't KZbin? Does Google really have such an inferior AI model? Or are they in cahoots?

If I have 100k and it’s a monthly dividend for 10% I make 10k? Doesn’t sound right?
@codyjones25406 ай бұрын
That 10% number is your annual yield. So you’ll get a 10k return over the whole year but it will be distributed monthly in smaller increments

IMO, I feel the recession is here, although mortgage rates are gradually falling and the Fed just paused but with higher imports and lower exports. Where do investors look at now for wealth gains? something will eventually break if they keep raising interests and quantitative tightening.

Putting well-earned money into the stock market can be over emphasized for first-time investors, unlike a bank where interest is sure thing! Well, basically times are uncertain, the market is out of control, and banks are gradually failing. I am working on a ballpark estimate of $5M for retirement, and I have a good 6-figure loaded up for this, could there be any opportunity for a boomer like me? I'm nearly 60.

I've never understood this obsession with monthly paying dividend stocks. Unless you've actually already retired they're really not necessary, and even then, if you haven't learned how to manage your income by the time you;re retired, you have bigger problems. Total return, that's what is important. I couldn't care less how often they pay me a dividend; I only care whether it's a good invetment with a reasonable yield.

Pretty much. What you should see is that the higher the yield, the more volatile, the lower the yield, the less volatile. If you learn these rules, you will be on your way.
