To be fair, being a tourist with minor knowledge of a local language can sometimes be worse than being a tourist with no knowledge of the local language. I know low-to-mid level Japanese (basically 3 years of high school), but struggle with complex vocab. When I go to Japan, I actually find opening conversations with Japanese gets me into worse situations than just opening with "English okay?" If they seemed bothered by English, I would _then_ segue into Japanese "a~ daijoubu. Nihongo mo ii desu" - which would cue them into my status as "knows Japanese, but not fluent" and properly set expectations, allowing us to mostly pantomime and use simple words to navigate our way through a conversation. On the other hand, the first time I went to Japan, I tried to politely meet them at their level and cold-opened my first interaction with "Sumimasen~ toire wa doko desu ka?" (excuse me for interrupting, where is the nearest toilet?), which got me a fluent Japanese response equivalent to "If you head down this concourse and hug the right wall, you'll eventually pass a lavender-colored ticket machine. Take the escalator near that ticket machine down to the basement and you'll take a slight left (not the hard left) at the 5-way intersection once you're down there. It will be kitty-corner to the pet shop." to which I only understood "uhh... I think I heard the word right, then she said a bunch of stuff, then left twice... Something about the number 5 and maybe something about an animal store?"

I will say for the coffee cake one that here in the US coffee cake actually doesn’t have coffee in it, it is instead a type of cake that is meant to go with coffee, so if that customer was American, that may have been the cause of the confusion.

It's the same in Canada. My cousin, he is English, didn't get any that he was offered because he thought it had coffee in it. I hear the dad yelling in the lobby and go to see what happened he comes up to the counter all pissed off going, "there's sour cream on here!" I go, "yup, I told you that it came with sour cream." He goes, "oh, alright," and then sits back down. Customers are weird.

AMERICAN buttercream in a traditional Irish bakery?!
@katiemadden94138 ай бұрын
I’m not entirely certain, but I’ve heard American buttercream is often easier to use for professional cake decorating (because of its firmness) when compared to other more smooth, rich buttercreams; they just don’t hold up structurally in the same way. Irish buttercream sounds like it’d be absolutely divine on a cupcake though-sounds heavenly😋
