when i used to get nuln oil and agarax earthshade, i would also get a bottle of lahmian medium for each and cut them 50/50. it resulted in exactly the effect you are getting from these new shades. so it looks like they are just selling you 50% of the pigment at 25% less volume for the same cost.

As for the effect of the new Nuln, I have a pot of 50/50 normal and gloss mix which apply the same as the New, including slight satin finish. If i thin it down with Contrast Medium, i get less shine.. if i thin with Lahmian Medium, i get the same thinned look as new Nuln. Conclusion: Ripoff.

Nice, fair review of these paints. I hope you know how much it helps to see you using them. There's tons of videos from folks who also attended the event that are applying them one by one on a model or test piece. As much as that helps to see the individual color, it doesn't put the paints into a real world scenario. You mixed, layered, and have great examples of how to push these paints to another level. You didn't demonstrate just the colors, but how to use them as a new tool. I'm impressed with your use of shade over contrast. Especially Ballz Deep on the shield. Well done.

I enjoy the thought of the shades working more like contrasts to stain less but you hit the nail on the head with the fact we lose the tinting capabilities with the new shades, maybe they we launch a new Glaze line in the future for that hole in their paint line now? But I'm not getting rid of my home made oil washes any time soon for these. When the announcent of "new revolution in painting" came out my guess was GW branded oils or enamels due to how most people are now phasing into them versus acrylic washes.

So less paint but still same price... Yeah, no, I'm switching shade brands. And for how it covers, I actually like how the current, old (?), shades give it an overall tint of black, brown, red, and so on. For me it helped bring the tone I wanted to fit with my bases and how the colors would feel. Agrax gave a nice dirty feel to it while Nuln Oil darkened down the armor or guns to help bring down the brightness of the colors used, something I really enjoyed since I'm not a fan of too bright colors. Agrax on lighter colors really give it a feel that the item has been out and about for some time. Really not sure the new ones will do the same thing for me, seeing how master Ninjon's examples turned out. Will probably turn to Army Painter's washes, hear good things about their soft, dark, and strong tones. Or Vallejo Game color washes, though I haven't heard much about them but their paints are good. Or some other brand my friendly local gaming store recommends.
@Tannhauser422 жыл бұрын
You can also make your own washes with a few items from a local hobby/crafts store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby with a sale or coupon. I use Les Bursley's wash recipe, which uses matte medium, flow aid (a good thing to have anyway), distilled water, and acrylic artist inks.

The (sadly soon to be discontinued) line of four gloss shades behaves a lot like this new formulation of shades. It flows into the recesses almost too well, to the point that you REALLY need to watch for pooling. A great way to use them is to get a nice wash done (since they don't stain or leave tidemarks) and then matte varnish the model. I think some form of gloss medium, like you mention, is the key to this property--same for all the contrast paints. It's a little harder to see on raised surfaces, but if you look at parts where contrast paint pools, it's noticeably glossy.
