For last 12 years I work as automotive design engineer and for last 4 years I work also as design engineer in domain of optoelectronics and optomechanics, nanotechnology, micro lens technology etc.I have some assemblies with more than 40K components at 6x6mm and guess what,I use advanced binned GTX1080ti..I use both QUADO and standard gaming cards but only difference is customer support and thats it.Long time ago we had some cards like Quadro FX 4800 with noticeable difference but right now the cards are more advanced with large amount of memory and there is no reason to buy QUADRO card unles you are a Pixar or you need someone to hold your balls in day to day work for that extra money.

@@MohamedSayed-vk9cp More than enough..You just need some good processor and at least 8GB of RAM, 16GB is some sweet spot..From my point of view,RAM is most important part.As engineering student, probably you will not have complex assemblies with 1500+ parts, you just need good piece of hardware for AutoCAD,Solidworks,Fortran,Basic or something like that,so just keep going and buy the best option for your pocket.

Dassault Systemes should know that a workstation is not affordable. I do have an 8 gen i7, 32 gb of RAM, but my GPU is a gaming one, a RX 570, not supported but nothing a couple of tweaks in the registry could not fix. Just a Quadro alone costs the same as the setup mentioned above or even more. That's just a complete madness. A very helpful video will be one in were you explain what's the bare minimum you'll need to build a decent and affordable semi-pro workstation. Hope you take that into consideration 👍

Some things that may be a bit newer than this video. AMD 5000 series does have better ipc performance, meaning better single threaded performance, as well as cpus with more cores (if you can buy any of the new chips). Not to mention, zen 2 (3000) and zen 3 (5000) AMD cpus support ecc memory if your motherboard as well supports it. That way you wont have buy an expensive xeon processor for ecc ability. Not to mention, gaming GPU's and work GPU's are only different in their drivers and quality. The nvidia quadros and amd wx pros are picked for the best silicon and refined drivers, that way the card is less likely to crash and works more smoothly. If you have a low budget and are doing light applications, then you could probably save money buying a "gaming" card as long as it has the right amount of memory or cores. The computer market is constantly changing so it's important to check for new products and research what is perfect for you.

Just an update, as of a few weeks ago, the AMD 5600x, 5800x, 5900x and 5950x CPUs have the fastest single core performance on the market. Intel was faster when this video was made and they will likely come back again one day, but AMDs newest CPUs are both the best possible option and the best value option. Also, while professional businesses should have Quadros, as a student or part time/hobbyist CAD designer you're far better off getting a GTX/RTX card than a Quadro. The only feature you'll miss out on is "trueview", which isn't very useful for students.

@@thecinephilefish9465 you don’t need a workstation card at all. It’s all marketing bullshit. The difference between a GeForce and Quadros is the way the heat is transferred. They are the exact same chip. Quadros or founders cards are engineered and made directly by the OEM. In this case is Nvidia. GeForce cards can be made by third party. MSI, Asus, gigabyte, PNY, list goes on. Heat transfer. For Quadros desktop cards, the heat is being rejected from the chip to the environment. GeForce the heat is being reject into the case, and you will need fans or liquid cooling to force it out into the environment. For laptops. Don’t both with a work station card. I’ve used a dell workstation, that fucker heats up and thottles like no tomorrow with large assemblies or high detailed assemblies. Just get a gaming laptop with GTX1660ti min if you plan on doing any analysis work. The integrate card works for design work just fine. Yes, you can run solid works on a surface pro. Fuck I’m play Diablo 3 on a surface pro with zero issue. With high pixel density too.

Hi, if you're looking to get the best out of SOLIDWORKS it's really important to get a graphics card that is dedicated for CAD modelling, for nvidia cards these will be part of the nvidia Quadro range and NOT the nvidia GeForce range. The other specs you have mentioned seem like they will be suitable, so you just need to check about the graphics card. If you'd like to read more about it, or check out some recommended machines then take a look at our hardware recommendations page here. www.solidsolutions.co.uk/solidworks/Hardware/default.aspx

@@TriMechGroup Would you please tell us post RTX2080 mobile release, if this is still true? I have noticed that most of the software companies have not updated their recommendations post RTX2080 release and the fact that NVIDIA now releases Studio graphics drivers for both the RTX quadro and RTX geforce cards. The move from Pascall to Turing architecture has changed the game, however, by how much is difficult to quantify without updated information from software providers. As an example, would a consumer be better off with the laptop versions of the older Pascall based Quadro P4200 or the new Turing based RTX2080 for solidworks? The Quadro P4200 is a year older and is designed for mobile workstations, whilst the Geforce is for High end gaming laptops but they share many similarities and the the geforce beats it in every benchmark except 2! Both of these configurations are now at similar price points, Both have 8GB of Ram, however the Quadro has the slower DDR5 to the 2080s DDR6 . GEforce 2080 Videocard is newer: launch date 11 month(s) later Around 12% higher core clock speed: 1380 MHz vs 1227 MHz Around 64% higher pipelines: 2944 vs 1792 A newer manufacturing process allows for a more powerful, yet cooler running videocard: 12 nm vs 16 nm 2x more memory clock speed: 12000 MHz vs 6008 MHz Around 9% better performance in PassMark - G2D Mark: 875 vs 801 Around 29% better performance in PassMark - G3D Mark: 13418 vs 10362 Around 27% better performance in GFXBench 4.0 - Car Chase Offscreen (Frames): 20327 vs 16043 Around 27% better performance in GFXBench 4.0 - Car Chase Offscreen (Fps): 20327 vs 16043 Then you have the older P4200 Quadro Around 4% higher boost clock speed: 1647 MHz vs 1590 MHz Around 50% lower typical power consumption: 100 Watt vs 150 Watt 2.5x better performance in GFXBench 4.0 - Manhattan (Frames): 3714 vs 1497 2.5x better performance in GFXBench 4.0 - Manhattan (Fps): 3714 vs 1497 2.2x better performance in GFXBench 4.0 - T-Rex (Frames): 3347 vs 1528 2.2x better performance in GFXBench 4.0 - T-Rex (Fps): 3347 vs 1528 Would you please explain to us how these two cards compare as you do not include Pascal based solutions in the above hardware link and they are now at very similar price points. (Quadro vs. GeForce) Can't use external monitor. I wrote to Nvidia support, but they wont support this kind of combination. Or can you somehow to affect Nvidia that they do somethig with drivers? No one will give me a Quadro P4000 for test, but there are no sense to by an ~1000$ Quadro P4000 GPU with this kind of driver issues and leave it on the shelve after failed test. Mobile chips are still not as powerful as their desktop counterparts. Mobile CPUs may have similar spec on paper however due to poor cooling they will thermothrottle and there is no way to keep max frequency for long. Another problem I have with your recommendation is stating that gaming GPU will cause issues with SW. This is simply untrue. Yes, gaming cards are not supported but they will be fine. They may not perform as well as their Quadro sisters, however as a lot of us do not have space for two machines, one for work/for entertainment, getting a high end gaming card will give you enough juice for quite complex assemblies. However if you stated that we need Xeon/Quadro for work, I would have not said anything as this makes sense, i.e. better stability (on paper). But recommending consumer grade CPU and professional GPU makes little sense, sorry. Talking from experience, I worked with Creo, Inventor, SW, ANSYS, Plant3D, Navisworks Manage. Bear in mind this is just an opinion :).

Quadro is ridiculously faster for solidworks specifically. They aren't hard to come by on laptops, you just have to look at the workstation ranges like hp zbooks and dell precision. You can find a ton of these used/refurb on ebay for way better prices as well and if you know how it's best to get a lower ram spec and buy some more you put in yourself to save more money. Buying new gives you a ton of great warranty compared with consumer gear though so for a business you 100% want to go that route.

Yeah I think so but you can also get the Threadripper wich is closer related to xeon but I’d say Ryzen 3rd gen is a good budget option due to the high core count.

Consider this: I7 8gen or more, 32 gb ram (for revit), Quadro p620 4gb, 500 SSD, 500 HDD. Do not consider a gaming latptop.
