Visited the Cret Aquarium🐟🦀🦑🐚 (their spelling) in Gouves while visiting Crete; focus on local species and was different from usual touristy stops which we had already seen. Couldn’t take a photo of the Lions Fountain ⛲️in Heraklion as there were students protesting; photos of protests are a BIG No-No for tourists…. Great vid!

We didn't get the chance to visit the aquarium but sounds like a good place to go whilst on the island. Thank you for the love! :)

@@ToucanTravellers Thank you!! So yes if you don’t mind, I do have a couple questions: we’re headed there end of Sept- hoping #1. is it still warm to get into the ocean/pools? Also we were planning on staying in Chania. We were debating staying at a hotel in Elounda, but we have a group of 10, and I think from what I’ve gathered, Chania has more of an active vibe and there’s more to do/explore? Would love your opinion on that! And thirdly, We will be in Santorini 5 days and then Crete 5 days. I’d love to explore around Crete, but with only 5 days, and a larger group (and we will be staying at a resort), which other places in Crete would you recommend if you had to narrow it down to just a few? Xoxo
@ToucanTravellers2 жыл бұрын
@@Celeste-iq5hc Of course, that's no bother. We actually went around the same time last year (end of September) and Chania was actually lovely and warm during the day (averages of 25+ degrees Celsius) temperatures do drop during the evenings, so definitely bring a jacket as it can get quite chilly! In terms of where to stay, it depends on what you're after. Elounda is a very family-friendly peaceful town to stay that has great scenery and a lovely place to relax, however, Chania does have a lot more going on. Chania makes a great base to see others areas in Crete, so personally, if I had to choose between the two, I'd opt for Chania. Crete is a huge island and even spending 2 weeks there wasn't enough to see everything. We've actually written a blog post and given a list of the top things to see in Crete here: worldtraveltoucan.com/crete-itinerary- you can check out the top section (Chania 4 days) and we give a list of our hotel recommendations, as well as top things to do in the area. I hope this helps :) Susie x

What dates did you travel? I notice a lot of videos don’t mention when travel dates occur. Not sure if it’s done on purpose but it would be good to know that the reason it was not as crowded, water was not as warm etc occurred during this time….
@ToucanTravellers2 жыл бұрын
Hi Fernanda, we travelled to Crete mid-September in 2021 until the start of October. The weather was really pleasant during our stay and warm enough to swim the sea. The pools were quite cold though so we didn't go in them much. All in all, it was quite busy especially at the main attractions, but not overly crowded :) I hope this helps!

Informative video. Thanks . Did you fly in and out of Hania. We will be going to Crete in a couple of weeks and will rent a car, but thinking to avoid doubling back with our car and arriving in Hania and out of Heraklion. What did you do and do you have any suggestions . many thanks
@ToucanTravellers2 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, thanks for the comment! We flew both in and out of Heraklion. We spent 5 days exploring Chania and the drive took around 1hr45 from Heraklion. The drive was ok, as long as you spend a good few days in Chania to make the drive worthwhile. There are also some sights along the way to Chania that you can stop off at to break the journey also :)

Ancient history lovers should make the relatively short drive to Dikteon Cave (park your car in Psychro village, and then make the small hike up to the cave - wear good shoes as the path is not the easiest to navigate as you near the top! On the way back to the village take a drink and bite to eat in one of the village cafes/restaurants overlooking the valley). Dikteon Cave is purported to be the Cave in which Zeus was born (or, more specifically, one of two caves on Crete which purport to be the birthplace of Zeus - the other being Ideon Cave, though Dikteon Cave is the far more beautiful and interesting cave). Of special archeological interest is that many small statues and other religious items ("votive" offerings) were excavated at Dikteon and predate the emergence of the Zeus mythology by more than 1000 years. Because of the numerous religious offerings predating the classical Greek gods, this cave really DOES feel like the birthplace of Zeus. Couple this with a later trip to the island of Mykonos with a short day boat to the smaller religious sanctuary island of Delos and visit the lake in which Zeus' children, Apollo and Artemis, were born for a truly "family affair"!

@@revparsons3tl Hi Nick. As far as I'm aware, I don't think Stalis has a harbour, so you'd need to make your way to a nearby town and get a boat from there. We got to Spinalonga Island from Elounda. I think you can get to Elounda from Stalis by bus but will need to change as Agios Nikolaus.

@ToucanTravellers2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sophie. We chose two bases over 11 days. Chania first for 5 days and then the Heraklion resort area for 5 days, plus one night in Rethymno. It's a huge island so you'll see more if you travel around a little bit. If you prefer staying in one place or are visiting for a short amount of time, we recommend Chania or Rethymno as there's a good mix of attractions nearby. Hello there, you can refer to our guide on where to stay on the island here: worldtraveltoucan.com/where-to-stay-in-crete/ There's a section on Chania and we've included a few hotel options. In terms of beaches, the closest beach to the town is Nea Chora Beach that's really popular amongst tourists and locals :)

Any idea how easy it is to drive in Crete compared to uk?
@ToucanTravellers2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kieran! We found the driving pretty straight forward in Crete, but many of its roads aren't as developed as the UK, but as long as you're cautious and drive slowly, it's all fine. We didn't notice any crazy drivers whilst we were there and felt safe!

I'm visiting Greece next month. Is it a dangerous country to visit? How is regular crime (Pickpocketing, theft, etc...) and serious crime (kidnaps, murders)? Is it dangerous for a tourist? Thank you
@ToucanTravellers2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, we found Crete extremely safe and didn't experience or notice any minor theft issues at all. As always, there are areas everywhere where you need to be more careful, but the best thing to do is to check the official gov ernment website here www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/greece/safety-and-security

@@elizabethsaunders3249 Funny enough I just visited Mexico City last week and I found it extremely safe, modern, clean and more beautiful than almost all the American cities I know, nothing like what you see in movies or news. So, precisely because people like you, who speaks without knowledge is why I have to ask these kind of questions I would appreciate if you don't speak about a subject you don't know about and keep your opinions for yourself

@from Crete It's funny I just visited Mexico City last week and it is more beautiful than almost all the American cities I know and some European cities I visited 3 months ago when I asked this question, also it is very safe. You probably didn't know because movies and news give you a wrong idea of reality, that's precisely why I had to make this question and hear from a reliable source.
