@patriciabourbon6534 жыл бұрын
socallawrence Hi! Lucky you to be going to Greece! Seriously, any taverna you eat at will be delicious. My favorite taverna was Blue Restaurant in Chania. Depending on whether you want easy access to the beach or city center, would determine where you would want to stay. In the city center, there are many great restaurants and local shops. You also have the harbor near the city center of Chania. All within walking distance. There are many great villages. There’s Rethymno, Heraklion and lots of smaller villages. I would suggest staying in an Air BnB vs a hotel. While in Europe, I always stayed in Air BnB’s and never had one problem. If in Crete and you have time, look up in Google- Andronikis Cretan House in the village of Loutra. Niki does greek cooking lessons in her home and it’s the best most authentic Greek food ever!! Her food is phenomenal. I promise you will not be disappointed! Your money will go a long way in Greece. Food is very, very affordable. We lived like millionaires in Greece with American salaries. Now back to my humble living in California 😥! Safe travels!

Greek cuisine is heaven. From the 36 countries I have visited in the world, I absolutely fell in love with Greece, for many things including it's cuisine. It's incredibly fresh/diverse but most of all, the flavours I had, was better than I have ever tasted anywhere else. From Turkey with it's massive hygiene problems and often enough mediocre food with even half rotten tomatoes that I have tasted, to Italy where 90% is pasta pizza with almost every "instalata" costing 8-11 euro's while it only consists of just some salad leaves or shaved carrot. I was so surprised, or their bakeries where 2 desserts costs 10 euro's and being pretty good, they where not heavenly. The point is. Ingredients in Greece are of the highest quality and taste, and their dishes are sublime, varying from very simple to very complex. It's the combination of all factors combined that makes Greek cuisine so great

True worlds from a person that you can tell visited places and tasted food. Every region in Greece has a different tradition , but the philosophy remains the same. Good quality raw ingredients. You can't go wrong with that. Greek cuisine is so diverse cause people will use local products everywhere. By the way Cretan diet (and not mediterranean diet as is mistakenly known) is the best diet in the word ,proven by scientists, consisting of amazing quality vegetables , Greek olive oil , lots of fish and great quality meat (in small doses). He should have also tried snails too. An amazing Cretan delicacy. To die for.

Haha yeah that was lamb intestines wrapped/stuffed with other chopped organs. They are called "gardoumpakia". Sometimes they have nothing inside, they are like mini kokoretsi. Depends on the dish. And they always made by hand. I really hope you ate sea urchin "salad" in Crete. Basically fresh urchin drenched in olive oil and a little lemon juice. You dip bread in it and its like tasting a butter made from the Aegean sea! Also the authentic cretian gyro pita(aka "souvlaki") is different from Athens. They are double the size, lots of fries in it and they put thick greek yogurt instead of tzatziki. What you ate is the more of the athenian version. You are right about the green lemons, they are like a big lime. Sharper taste. Last, i also hope you ate wedding pilaf (aka "gamopilafo"). Goat cooked for hours in a pot with rice. The rice is flavored from the meat and the meat melts in you mouth. Served traditionally in weddings thus its name. Love from Athens, Sofia 💙🙋

Keetu's Diary hahaha yeah it could be a great idea for a dish to serve in Halloween 😂 ! Greeks don't eat dishes with organs very often, too much work to make or they don't like the taste. The ones that are most consumed are kokoretsi and mageritsa (we eat it at a specific Easter day) .Its lamp chops, chopped organs and gardoumpakia with lettuce, dill, green onions and a couple other things cooked in a pot. The sause of the dish called augolemono, which means egg and lemon. Whipped egg whites with lemon juice and put in the magerista while still warm, so the egg cooks a little.

Finally I had the time to watch your Crete videos, and I'm stunned. You bring me back to the island where I was some summers ago, and had my best time because of all the heartwarming people. We visited Chania, and Rethymnon, but stayed more outside on the countryside, away from the main cities and the crazy amount of people. But they both were beautiful of course ^^ Ohh and luckely we met a super taxidriver, such a gorgeous olderly man, didn's spoke any english but we had so much fun try to communicate with hand and feet, and I had a translation book with me and tried to speak with it haha. So at the end of the holidays (we always called him to ask if he drives us to gorges or monastrys, outside in the country side) we landed at a small tavern next the ocean, run by a familymember of him, and he invited us(!what!) Had such tasty Gavros(small grilled fish,eaten the whole) Raki, and a incredible time, laughing, talking to the people. He gave us a sight on the hospitality and friendlyness I've never imagined, if someone visit Crete try to get in touch with locals, it will incrase the experience 1000times because they will overwhelm you ... and you bring me back all those feelings. Thank you. Would love to go back as soon as I can ^^ lovely greetings to you, your family and everyone from Crete

@plejade4125 Apparently you are a lovely and hospitable person yourself. Greek people were always egger to learn new things, meet new people and make friends. You said it yourself, you didn't speak the same language! Making a friend is because you are a friendly person too. What some visitors of Greece misunderstand is that hospitality and friendliness does not come with the vacation package they have bought. We are very tolerant and kind with rude people that visit us and believe me they are a lot. But i believe it is in our dna to help. Even me as a very introverted and not so friendly person when i see some foreigner who needs directions or help i try to help because i immediately think, oh he is away from home. So do not mistake the Greek spirit with subservience. People who visit the same destinations in Greece again and again can tell you why they do it.

Being 68 years old its wonderful to be taken back to the Greek Islands where I had my first overseas holiday when I was 18 in Rhodes...considering I live in Scotland it was a complete culture and weather shock as it is so warm but I still travel there to visit and sample the fabulous food and the Greek hospitality which is unmatched anywhere...

Mark, I have to say that I am really excited to see you in Chania, not so much cause its my city but because you are really going out of your way to discover the authentic food of Crete that represents the culture, the people and the island itself not like most tourists who usually go for the ubiquitous paste-like mousaka, frozen pizzas, fries and lousy souvlaki before binge - drinking. If I had seen you anywhere you would had come for dinner to my place. Next time!

As a Brit expat in USA, I was raised on meat n potatoes, fish and chips but having lived in 4 countries and travelled 8; I've expanded my cooking, cuisine knowledge to international foods. I so love cheese and lamb is my favourite meat. Did rosemary roasted leg of lamb with homemade mint sauce for my family Xmas dinner. Too wimpy to try lamb stomach though. Lol Thanks for further enlightening me on world cuisine. Bless you and your family. Treasure every moment with your beautiful son. Life is fragile. Lost the first of my 4 sons. My favorite food on earth is Greek. I was salivating watching you eat the pork gyro! Greeks use fresh, delicious ingredients---lots of wonderful vegetables that are so fresh, I love the homemade pitas, the pork, spanakopita, moussaka, pastichio, souvlaki, baba ganoush........I had some Greek men in my family by marriage, and there is nothing on earth that makes them happier, than to feed family! Superior. OH MARK.....kudos to you, for you to not vomit after eating that colon and the undigested remains.......you have a STRONG stomach!

Hello, I'm a Greek woman truck driver in America. Thank you for loving Greece and Greek food. Babba ganush is Turkish. It's the eggplant dip, "melitzano- salata", easy to make: bake a whole eggplant in the oven (better wrapped in aluminum foil) then let it cool, peel it and throw the peel away (it has... nicotine in it) then smash the interior with a fork, add salt pepper, olive oil, vinegar, garlic. It goes well with tzatziki dip and grilled bread. Good luck 😋😀

The local people in Crete are so hospitable and friendly and the island is so amazing! ❤ The local food are also DELICIOUS AND FRESH! (Seafoods and all!). The tastiest frozen greek yoghurt i can't get enough is from Yogrec in Heraklion made of combo sheep and cow's milk they said. I always walk and buy it while i was there even if the store is nearly 1km away from the hotel. One of my best travel experience is Greece! ❤❤❤

I love the smile on Mark's face, it really cheers me up when watching his videos. His passion for food makes me want to take a dive in the dishes ahaha.. barbecued fish like the two dishes at the end of the video is usually eaten in Greece with bread along with the ' ladolemono" , the olive oil and lemon sauce it was served with.. it was so funny and cute and non Greek to see Mark eat on its own using a spoon.. The bougatsa place he went to for breakfast seems like a true jem of a place!
