Deadlines plus the devs operated under the assumption that Pokemon was a bit of a fad that wouldn't have much staying power, so they weren't worried too much about balancing the new 'mons like the first batch

Honestly, I think Pokémon Red’s development is extremely impressive. They chose the piece of shit GameBoy (I love it to death, and played Pokémon Red on it for hundreds of hours, but it’s not exactly the best console) and created a massive world with 151 Pokémon, tons of NPCs, all of the battle mechanics (some were flawed, to say the least), programming what moves each Pokémon learn, their stats, programming evolutions, and every move animation, etc. They did all that on a game smaller than a PNG picture on Bulbapedia. People like to shit on the game for its seemingly endless flaws, but I find it extremely impressive for a development team that probably didn’t even know how to make it at first. What’s more impressive is how much Gen 2 improved on Gen 1. Basically every bug and glitch was fixed, they added 2 new types, 100 more Pokémon, a whole new region, the region from the PREVIOUS game, etc. The GameBoy games are probably very outdated now but I really feel like they’re the most authentic games in the series.

@@aappaapp6627 Yeah, the second part is extremely apparent. Gen 2 Pokémon that aren’t connected to Gen 1 are mostly FUCKING AWFUL. They’re either unfinished, like Sneasel, Yanma, or Gligar, are just pure shit, like Sunflora, or are just outclassed by Kanto Pokémon, like Mantine. It’s probably easier to beat the game with all Kanto Pokémon and no Johto starter than it is to beat it with only Johto Pokémon (no Kanto-related Pokémon).
