You're right of course but i had one from the late '60s, An Audition (Teisco) Jazz-alike, bought from my best friend for $12.00 in late '72 when i started playing for keeps (had acoustics around, never got anywhere). Wasn't easy to play but great to learn on. Gold Foils and yes i sold it back to him for the same price when i got a Harmony Rocket II a couple of years later. Bakers dozen here and i still I miss both.

My first guitar was in 1966 it was a domino Californian. With a silvertone amp. I don't think we ever set the guitars up we didn't know how. I thought the truss rod raised and lowered the strings. I know my fingers hurt. I found pictures of the band it looks really cool with all the cheap guitars and silvertone amps. We used to play "Gloria" 24/7. Then I went into the military. In the seventies I just drank. I didn't play much. My father sold all my stuff when I was in the military. My first real guitar was in 1980 when I got married and took a $400 loan and I bought a Westbury amp and a Gibson "the SG."

Met a nice gal in '77 and on my own at 20.Traded the Strat for a total POS LP Custom Copy and $40.00 (some history with the shop). I was courting. Still in love. Moved to an apt so really couldn't jam and sold everything, Great little Magnatone amp Big Muff,,,, '81, move to a bigger place. Neighbor played. Borrowed a guitar from him and an amp from a friend. He'd just bought a Westbury :) Even after the time passed, i plowed thru Yesterday And Today tunes. Next thing my wife greenlights a Aria CS250 and the amp i borrowed, a Moon 45 (later given back when i bought a Mace, '82). the rest is history. Been playing about a year and have a few acoustics and had and sold a Gibson SG due to it not quite being comfortable enough for me personally.Recently bought an Epiphone electro acoustic and it has made me realise how much I hate narrow necks,which Epiphone seem to have. My second hand fender squier acoustic is much more confortable to play but the body is too big. The point I'm making is that fretboard size or width,fretboard shape,body size etc, all become more important than price which you have hinted at in this video. I have a little 3/4 sized Yamaha and I like it and its made me take a look at the Yamaha Revstar which I thought might make the list given its similar in price range to the Gretsch.

The Pacifica line used to be much bigger back in the ‘90s, they had several very attractive, and great playing/sounding variations of Strat, and Tele designs. Mike, the builder is Bulgaria, i'm in Canada and you're in Australia Shane, what a connection 🙂 that was just impossible like 15 years ago. I think I bought my first electric guitar 16-17 years ago. It was a brand called "GK" cost me someting like 300$ the pickup were much worse than you can find at a guitar at half price today and the neck felt like a saw 🙂 imagine the guitars that you can find at that price today as a beginners guitar

One caveat for the Classic Vibe 60s Strat. Make sure you get an older one, the one with the tortoise shell pickguard. They changed the pickups in the newer versions and they do not sound the same at all. They are far more sterile and unappealing compared to the first iterations of the CVs.

What year models would that flow in? I have heard superb things about the early models. What type of pickups were in them? Thanks for the information ?
@thejoshbtv4 жыл бұрын
@@hlcotten6587 I do not know the exact model years. I believe the CV models were just changed for the 2020 model year. I do not know exactly what the pickups were versus what they are now, but there is a distinct difference from the first model compared to the current model. There is a lack of warmth that the originals had. The first run of CV 60s Strats were only available in 3 tone sunburst with a tortoise shell pick guard. The new model offers the 3 tone but with a white pick guard and they also added the lake placid blue color with a white pick guard. So unless someone has changed the pick guard, that can be your identifier of the different models. I had a 2017 and it was great. I think anything prior to 2020 should all be the same. You should research the year that the new ones were introduced, but I'm pretty sure its 2020.

You have made some great choices, i totaly agree with the Squire Classic Vibe and Yamaha Pacifica 112V. The Harley Benton's may not be a good idea for a beginner unless you have a friend that can set it up for you and upgrade the tuners, pots and pickups. The important point for any beginners guitar is that it is easy to play or you will not put in the all important practice. Buy the best you can afford, cheap starter guitars as best avoided.
@ces694 жыл бұрын
Totally disagree with you on the Harley Benton’s! I’ve had 3 and still have 2 of them! And although I have now done some upgrades to put the guitars in the “next” league up, none of them were essential with all of them playing great from the start! I actually had to do a lot more to my Epiphone Les Paul junior upon first acquiring than any of the Harley Benton’s! So anyone considering a Harley Benton, don’t be put off, buy with confidence! If you are in Europe their return policy is excellent if there should be any defects! From what I hear, not so good if you live further afield!

Great video, Shane. Thank you. I consider myself an advanced guitarist. One of my gigging guitars is a Squier Bullet hard tail Strat. I just added a rails humbucker in the bridge and wired the middle tone pot to go to the bridge pickup so smooth out the bridge pickup tone. I love the guitar very much. Lightweight. And for someone like me with arthritis in my left shoulder it’s so comfortable. There were no sharp fret ends and the stock tuners keep the guitar in tune.

Over the past couple of years I've gone 'down market', and I love it. Some of the best guitars I have are in the lower end of the mid price range, mainly Epiphones, before you part with £2,000+ for the name, play them side by side through the same amp, you'll be surprised that 10x the price doesn't get you 10 times the guitar. I should know, been there many times.

I have to laugh when I see people say: 'This is a beginner guitar' like that's the only people who would use them. The existence of Jack Pearson (Allman Brothers) playing Squiers off the shelf (with a full setup, obviously), and many other people - including Jimmy Page - playing budget instruments in famous bands destroys the claim of the 'beginner' instrument. Sure, if one is talking affordability, yes. But, MANY professionals play these 'beginner' instruments - and do so on a regular basis. I'm NOT referring to Shane here. I'm referring to others who dump on 'beginner' instruments because of their bloated egos.

I agree with you completely. I've played since the mid sixties, and according to my fortunes, I have had expensive guitars and budget guitars. Through it all, I have found that it was me, not the guitars, that made the music sound good, or bad. One of the best guitars I have is also the cheapest. Anyway I think it's mostly a matter of what you can afford.
@Axess-sv8nq4 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanhandsmusic Yeah, I've had the same experiences. My favorite Les Paul I'd owned while gigging was my Cort. I was young and foolish. So, I traded it away for something different. My favorite Strat-type was my Squier II HSS Strat. It was awesome! I've played Gibsons and Fenders (and owned them) in my career. But, the ones that performed great all-around were the copies and budget models!

Thanks Shane for another great video. I feel pretty good about the second hand Yamaha Pacifica 112J that I bought last week to learn on. But I wouldn't say I'm enjoying it quite yet as my fingers are crying for mercy every time I pick it up. (>。

This is a fantastic list!!! And are you more tan or is that new cam lol? I would love a similar version on used buys. My experience is at least in the USA I can get a used MIM strat for quite a bit less than a new squier classic vibe. I also feel like Ibanez has a strong offering for beginners but their terrible naming system makes it really hard to figure out.

I actually got some sun for a change. Well, I got a little bit burnt, but it went brown thankfully haha.

If you like the SX try Agile, same company just better quality. My Agile is 9 years old and still plays and sounds excellent.

it would be so easy to sand the point off that sx headstock, and it would make it look really cool imo, but if it sounds good at that price point, i'm really not bothered about a small gripe like that anyway.

I think the SXheadstock looks better than most knockoffs, and I like the tinted gloss much better than the pale straight off the sander look a lot of the copies have.r

If John Mayer played one people would probably go mad for it, point is a tiny piece of wood on the end is really inconsequential to tone, which is the most important thing. If people are bothered that much by the look, or brand name they should be parading the catwalk like a vain supermodel. Ask yourself this people who manage to express themselves through music so brilliantly and inspire us with a great riff or solo, at the point where they write something inspiring and are channelling something etherically beautiful and timeless are they at that very point thinking about how good they look with their fender strat and marshal stack? , of course they aren’t because to be in a place of musical genius that kind of thinking is irrelevant and inhibitory to the creative process.

Hi Shane, Is it okay if I request a review of Tagima guitars. I mean if you have access to any, because they seem good based on other people's testament. I just want to get your point of view on them. Thank you
