Former AT owner and current GSA owner here. I agree that the AT is the best looking heavy weight adventure bike, but of course looks are subjective. IMHO these are the two best bikes in the segment but they hit in different ways. For the style of riding I do on a big bike the GSA is a better fit for me, at least at the moment. If I need to get more technical and aggressive off-road and require the use of a 21/18 wheel setup then I will be jumping on my KTM 500. For slabbing big miles on the highway with dirt and gravel roads throw in along the way the 19" front wheel is a better fit. While the AT is a great on road bike, it doesn't hold a candle to the GS/GSA in that department but that could change now with the 19" wheel on the AS model. I am not opposed to considering another AT in a few years when I am ready to trade out for a freshie especially since I am not really getting along with the looks of the new 1300 all that well.

A comment addition to my previous post on the model comparison . To me the perfect bike has yet to be invented and like a Crescent wrench , adjustable to the job but far from perfect . I have owned a large Adventure touring bike with a 19” front , hardened for the back country roads . A KTM SA-T but while it would get you to the gravel at warp speed , once there it was a front heavy ,big tank , long range fussy beast . It has been replaced with the AT AS manual which is so much better for the expressed purpose (see previous) with the 21 and 50:50 rubber . My long distance road runner is now a KTM SA-S outfitted for tarmac touring only . At the moment a complementary combination . Chose the destination , route , explore options and then the best tool (bike) to complete . My back yard is a very big interesting place to ride and discover . The AT is a great tool. I am the limiting factor in all situations . For me , I chose wisely . Now to fix that *##** throttle snatch ( any ideas out there ?) Cheers RS

The only problem is that you cannot get DCT basic model without electronic suspension. Thus it's super annoying because it suddenly becomes crazy expensive. I do love DCT, just did my first trip ever on DCT through Europe for 30 days. I doubt I'll ever want anything but DCT. I'm actually in need of a bike, but Transalp doesn't have DCT option, and AT is just too big, too heavy and too expensive (because you can't get basic version with JUST DCT).

DCT is probably annoying people with very good clutch skills when off road riding....I found the same annoyance with quick-shifters on road. You have to "re-learn" something you've been doing for decades to accommodate the new tech. It's annoying as heck. I found when rev matching on the road and using friction zone at low speeds(think squirting out of low speed corners) that quick shifters sometimes interfere with that process.... In fact, at a Suzuki demo day I found myself gravitating back towards non-quick-shifting optioned bikes.

Doing 98% on road and only wanting a polyvalent bike with the option of the occasionnal off road and being able to travel without much limitations, the AT makes much more sense to me now that it has a 19" front. However, I would have like to have both models be available with a 19 or a 21, as the Adventure Sports also comes with a lot of options that make the price go up a lot...

Did they make the air filters accessible without having to remove about 84 fasteners of various sizes with different tools and breaking a half dozen plastic fairing tabs? (That’s hyperbole fellas) ADV bikes are meant to be ridden in dirty & dusty off-road conditions, so easy air filter servicing is pretty important. That’s been a big fail in the Africa Twin’s design since day 1.

As far as DCT goes sales of Africa Twins in 2022 were split 50/50 between manual & DCT. Most people who try DCT find themselves loving it. I had huge problems trying to get my head around it at first but I reckon the best thing to do is just take it for a spin. After a couple of hours you'll likely love it. I did the Honda Adventure Experience back in March 2023, having bought a DCT AT in November but having way too much nerves to just get on & ride it. I wanted a day or two on a DCT AT with some supervision & instruction, and I got that along with a day off road on very dodgy ground, sliding around in mud, on shale, all sorts. Honestly within 15 minutes I was happy as I could be. Give it a go, folks. Take a test ride.

Just to add, you don't need a 21" front wheel off road for gravel - you need them for obstacles, for rock-hopping and getting over logs. It probably makes very little difference on gravel - look at supermoto bikes.

Great vid mate as an ATAS 2020 DCT variety owner - 62 years of age, I was bikeless from 1979 to 2019 (FORTY years) and rode only a couple of times in the 40 years on borrowed bikes. HOWEVER - for me as a Honda boy/man since I could talk, and riding again since 2019, I HATE the DCT when slow manoeuvring.... U turns etc. I WAS going to swap in 2024 for manual, with quick shift. Pricing is really interesting how it differs from country to country. In NZ, new GS's are close to 40K, the new 1300 probably more. Base model AT's are leaner, just picked up a brand new 2022 for $23K (got discounted for stock clearance - only difference between '22 & '23 is slightly more blue). Here this is only a few more grand than a new T7. The '24 upgrades are of course better, but for what probably will be close to $30K? Just refinement culture at this point. Fundamentally the same bike. Would love to have it but for many normal people the price will be the difference between having one and not. And am already kicking myself for spending this much... Would love to have seen them fix the 20 second dash and safety warning nanny on the '24 but I somehow doubt it... perfect bike if so.

Just got an update from Honda NZ today. We will have both options. Manual and DCT on the ADV Sport. We unfortunately have to wait till September 2024. NZ is always way behind with most brands except with the Triumph 2024 models. They are already on the showroom floor. I was hoping for the 19" front wheel. I will be on gravels roads maybe 30% at most so this suites me perfectly. The question I have to ask myself : is the 2024 AT ADV S with a much higher price tag(app 5.3k-5.9k really worth it?... comparing to the 2024 Tiger 900 GT Pro/Rally Pro. a GR8 PLUS POINT FOR BOTH BIKES (Honda and Triumph) ARE THE INCREDIBALY "FAST" CHIPS THEY USE IN THE DISPLAYS. I been street riding for 55 years and trail riding for 40 years. A reverse gear would be so helpful when you get crossed up in some deep ruts or stuck in a mud hole. Honda put a reverse gear in the Goldwing, why the F would they put it in the big heavy trail riding African Twin? On a side note, MotoBob, for us older (71) guys here in the U.S. of A. when your say or list the specs for bikes in your video reviews will you please list the specs also inches and pounds in your videos, we don't speak the metic system here.

Absolutely fantastic. Very intuitive and a lot of fun. Different of course but good different. Love this clip. Very informative and, as always, well balanced information.

I see the AS 2024 is available in either black or white/tricolour for 2024. I want to go for the black with manual gearbox model with quickshifter but I see it comes with black wheels only, the tricolour model comes with gold wheels, I wonder why they don't offer the gold wheels on the black bike? pity.

I just put a custom Corbin seat on my 2022 Africa Twin AS ES. The factory seat is for the showroom only. The new Corbin supports my 250 lb. much better than the bent plastic from the factory.

If the Honda offered DCT and 150 hp it would be a no brainer for me. The dct is awesome, just wish it had more power. But literally everything else about the bike i absolutely love, and the dct is definitely one of the things to love. Others are looks, sound, handling, comfort, feel of quality. Just want moaaarrr powerrrrr

I personally dont like the way adv bikes look, fr looks like they all dove head first off a cliff into a wall and just went "every adv bike should look like this" The only one that doesnt is the BMW GS and the KTM 790/890R's every other ADV bike looks dumb as hell

99,99% of all ADV riders are on the road anyway... They just don't want to sincere with themself. Honda, BMW etc. knows their customers very well. 🤣

I LOVE my DCT. People need to get over themselves, so many people think they are professional rally riders. I have taken my Africa Twin through Moab and the Mid Atlantic BDR and can say I am glad I had the DCT and did not have to devote brain cells to shifting and could concentrate on all the other things trying to kill me instead. Its a fantastic bike and I was only able to tackle such a challenging ride because of the DCT not in spite of it. Try a DCT first before you turn your noses up to it. I love the new color schemes too.

The biggest reason I have never bought an AT is the tubed tires (the AS felt too big), I think the new tubeless is a big upgrade. IMO CC is a really nice thing in the US with the highways but here in Asia with the road conditions I can't use CC or heated grips. I'd like a stripped down base model. Tubeless, MT, and priced cheaper without CC and heated grips.

When the Honda 4 wheelers break, Which is not often, its usually the electronic shift push buttons. I cannot stand the tech and blinking lights on the dash when you turn TC ABS off. They can keep this tech junk wagon. Need a basic dirt bias model, hold the tech junk.

There are 2 versions, honda haven’t ruined it, buy the one that suits you best, tbh the standard AT which is lighter and now has the adjustable screen, electronic suspension, cruise control and tubeless wheels will be the pick of the models now. 19” front wheel, I don’t hear anyone moaning about the GS front wheel offroad, why don’t people just wait and see what it’s like before whinging about it, it may well be just as good, it will almost certainly be a big bonus for most riders who spend most their time on a tarmac road.

CRF1100 engine should be exhibited in a museum for how bad one can make an engine in 2023, it has the world record for least number of HP and torque compared to engine displacement

Why tf you calling it "Honder"? Its "Honda" my guy. There's precisely zero 'R's in the name "Honda".

If anything it should be a damn choice. I like shifting my own gears in a traditional fashion. I'd go base model is it had the bigger tank.... f-me

Did Honda not notice yet that people are not seven foot tall and able to lift v8 engines out without a winch. Seen so many of these go over in camping fields because people can not hold them up on off camber slopes.

After 2019, Honda lost its way with the AT or ATAS, they tried to chase the upper tech market without balancing it with more power yet the price jumped and left it in a weird space compared to Ducati or BMW. On top of all that, they added menus, tech and buttons galore to the thing which seemed very advanced but in all their thinking……someone forget to ask the motorcycle rider how to use all of it. There are plenty of review videos of people trying to figure out how to use all those buttons and features, some of the reviewers pointing out they had to get the manual out and spending 30-40minutes changing modes and turning the ABS off……🤦🏻‍♂️ Making it even more lost when you compare it to the new Transalp. Basically the current T-Alp is lighter, simpler, almost as much power and what the AT should have been. The Current crop of AT’s are a mixed bag of non focused bikes that don’t define themselves well in a crowded space, both by marketing or price , and seem to exist for someone who “just likes a Honda” instead of a bike that defines itself poignantly by several traits. Now……before someone flamethrows me to the ground, I’ve owned two AT’s, a 2016 standard and 2018 DCT, (at the same time) years ago. I love Honda and the AT’s, I still have my 2018 ATAS model and it will be the bike I will never sell. I hope Honda finds its way back with a better AT in the future, a simpler, lighter, basic, well balanced bike better positioned by price and simplicity……in today’s terms, the TransAlp?! 😮
