Kevin should make a video on how he figures / establishes a new species in captivity. How he figures to correctly keep them , breed them and anything along those lines. Even talking about how he got in contact with some of the importers he works with.

Back when I used to breed different geckos (cresties, panthers and more), I started breeding lobster roaches and all the geckos just took off! More eggs and way faster growing babys. Nowadays I use it for different inverts and they seem to love them as well. Best feeder roach out there!

I love how you show both feeder and pet species! So it makes sense why some aren't feeders. It seems all can be a good pet but some are better at it. Glad to know some species are far less likely to reproduce which would be great for wanting to only keep a few as pets and not worrying about a colony forming.

Mabe only do that if you know your mate isn't going to just up n leave lol like if they have a true phobia to where they can't even look at photos of them without being dramatic. We must continue the good fight to change their perspectives'!! Haha

The big roach you have could be two types. B. Giganteus ( i think they are) or archimandrita tessellata. But I remember mine as more broad and more spotted. Some times I find weird hybrids at least I europe. Took me ages to actually get B. Craniferii. The one you need from Blaberus is discondalis. Smaller than craniferii and giganteus. But faster growing. Not as fast as Dubai but you will get a larger cockroach. I liked to feed with these to my larger animal.
@christianandersen5521
@christianandersen5521 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes B. Discondalis is called ghost cockroach or similar. Because the true one ( Also crazy amount of hybrids here in eu) will get very light almost white wings.

I am not a pet enthusiast or insect nut or anything along those lines, but I am a organic no till gardener and besides worms I use ivory head roaches to make frass and compost to add chiten and silica etc to my soil. In essence I keep several ivory head roach bins and throw food and garden waste in to feed them and they thrive for weeks without attention and multiply exponentially in warm temps like say a greenhouse or whatever. This is for breeding tho you can keep them and have some breeding at room temp indoors just inna closet. Anyway the point is I know nothing of roaches and reptiles as a hobby but I cannot imagine an easier and better feeder roach to raise than ivory head. Tbh idk why they have not replaced dubias as feeders since they don't climb smell or Wing bite. The only thing I can imagine is ppl wanting to sell them for $$ don't like they burrow because that complicates the matter regarding separating ages, but if you are keeping em for compost or feeders for your own animals be it chickens or reptiles then I assure you you cant beat ivory heads.

I use to keep dubia. Problem that i found about dubias is they like to play possum most of the time whenever they feel cornered by any of my Tarantulas, centipedes, or scorpions. So i don't tend to keep them anymore and i have since switched to orange heads and discoid roaches ever since because they don't play dead as much as dubias. In fact, orange heads and discoids tends to stand their ground which is better than playing dead lol I mean I can still use dubias but, I will literally have to crush their heads first in order for my Arachnids and myriapods to get a good feeding response because dubias will in fact twitch and fidget when their heads are crushed. Dubias IMO are only great for reptiles that can actually see the dubia move than a blind predator such as Ts, scorpions, and centipedes. Hissing roaches exoskeleton are way to hard for my pets too btw.. So i don't keep them as feeders as well.

My leos, all 7 DO NOT like the taste of lobsters. I can get them to take maybe one a piece then they turn up their noses. However, I offer them dubs and they'll each take 3, 4, 5 mediums- larges. They love them. I feed all my roach species the same diet(base is chick starter, with fish flakes, and some organic fruit powder(banana this time)). So the only thing I can think of is that they taste different, maybe something to do with the odor the lobsters produce when agitated? Any ideas or insights guys?

You mention that many species make for good components in a bioactive setup. I breed discoids for my animals. When feeding them off we do a few different things. We’ll either tong feed or we’ll place them within an escape proof dish. I also keep many bioactive enclosures in which we use several different species of isopods as our cleaner crews. We have had discoids escape into bioactives only to learn that they’ll eat any eggs that are present within the setup. Now this could be an exception to the rule or this may be an anomaly or perhaps that’s just what they do. So, when you’re suggesting that species are good for bioactives, are you not worried about them eating eggs? What’s your experience with this (any species of roach)? We keep about 30 groups of crested geckos, about 7 groups of gargoyle geckos, and about 11 groups of mainland and pine island chahoua in enclosures with a bioactive substrate only. We will implement the use of cork slabs/rounds and plastic plants just to give some background info...

I did this with my lobster roaches and my colony was thriving until my colony burned up. 1. When the substrate reduces by half, don’t just throw new substrate on top. New and old substrate should be integrated. 2. Mist twice daily. Do not let the substrate to dry out. 3. And do not put your colony in a plastic tub with a heat pad on the outside.
