I've been studying for almost the whole summer and got my score from a 680 to a 980, almost 1000. I have done Kaplan courses over the summer and everything was complicated and fast for me, and I'm now getting recommended these books when I have my SAT on October 2nd. How can effectively study with these books because I now have to cram everything in, and I've been doing a little bit of Khan Academy stuff too, but what can I do to manage my time and study effectively without wasting any more time??

Thanks for your support! The black book is great for learning overall strategy and is a good companion guide to the official practice exams. It can feel a bit long and repetitive at times, but I think most students will find his conversational tone easy to digest. I like Mike's emphasis on thinking about why answers are correct and what specifically makes one answer better than another. Just remember though, that it's still very important for you to think critically about each of your wrong answers rather than simply relying on his explanations.

@PrepwithJen

Hi Emily - the best reading exercises are those from real college board practice exams. You can also supplement them with practice passages from Khan Academy. Lastly, be sure you're reading whenever possible. Depending on how much time you have before the test, I would focus on scientific articles, current events, and literary works.

What are your views on Kaplan SAT math prep as well as Kaplan SAT Reading and Writing prep?
@PrepwithJen
@PrepwithJen 4 жыл бұрын
In general, I don't recommend books from big publishers (Kaplan, Princeton Review, etc.) as your primary source of practice material. The questions aren't usually representative of real SAT questions, so you risk developing bad habits. There is an exception though: if you are aiming for a 1500+ score and you have exhausted all of the College Board practice exams, then it may be OK to try a few practice tests from other publishers. At this point, you should be very familiar with how real SAT questions are structured, so you'll be able to recognize questions that are not realistic.

@PrepwithJen
@PrepwithJen 4 жыл бұрын
Based on your score, it sounds like you need to fill in some fundamental gaps. Start small by reading things you enjoy and learning grammar rules. For math, you'll want to review algebraic concepts, as those are heavily emphasized on the SAT. Log all of your missed questions and write down a detailed explanation for why your original thought process was incorrect and what makes the right answer the best choice. Whether you can get to a 1500 depends on how much time you devote to mastering the fundamentals and understanding the root cause of your mistakes. I hope this helps and good luck!

@PrepwithJen
@PrepwithJen 4 жыл бұрын
You can use the books I recommended in this video, but you will likely need to supplement them with other sources (e.g., Kuta Software and Khan Academy for math drills and lessons, news articles, etc.). I can't tell you exactly how many hours you need to study, but the key is consistency. A few hours each day will really add up. Also, make sure you are very focused when you study by clearing away as many distractions as possible.

If you don't already have the workbook, then I would get the newest edition, which will include some updates and corrections to things like formatting errors and typos. If you already have an earlier edition of the book, however, then I don't think you need to buy another copy just for the updates. Just make sure your version of the book targets the post-2016 SAT.

@PrepwithJen
@PrepwithJen 4 жыл бұрын
I can't speak to the specifics of why this is happening to you, but in general, one of the main reasons for this problem is you haven't yet figured out the root cause of your mistakes. Reading someone else's explanation will make sense, but the ability to conjure up a new solution under a different scenario requires a deep understanding of the problem and how the test works. One of my main goals for my students is to train them to think like the test writer.

What are your thoughts on PWN the SAT Math? This is a great video :)
@PrepwithJen

Thanks for watching, Arnav! My personal teaching philosophy is to strive for conceptual understanding. From there, I share shortcuts. While techniques such as plugging in answers and back solving have their place, I believe teaching for knowledge building and understanding has longer-term benefits. With that said, I know PWN the SAT Math is popular with many students. It comes down to your own learning style. Ultimately, committing to a book that works for you is the best thing you can do.

It depends on your knowledge gaps and how much time you spend studying, but I would say it's possible!
