Springbank is my favorite. They still have the malting floor you can walk on, let you taste the beer, and of course the Washback bar is the best place to have a dram of their product.

That's actually a really great point, there's not many distilleries left with onsite maltings!

For a Whisky lover who wants to experience the complete process of Whisky making I would recommend Balvenie. Not for the Whisky but for the tour. It is quite expensive but well worth it since one gets aldo 6 drams at the end. You have to book the tour in advance.

Sounds like a good one too, what makes the tour stand out to you?
@jasonpetch144910 ай бұрын
I'll second that! What makes is stand out is that it's a small, very personal tour. Balvenie, like a few others on this list (Springbank, Laphroaig) still have a working malt floor, and they take you through every stage of the production process in a no rush tour (incl. coopering). The tasting at the end feels exclusive. Highly recommended (book months in advance).

Loved Laphroaig distillery!! The tour felt warm, friendly and just like family taking you around the distillery.

Nothing beats a great tour guide, that can make the world of difference alone!

The distillery from the wee town, Springbank.

Loved visiting Dunphail and would highly recommend. A tour that really starts at the start as well: the malting floor. Cheers

Lindores Abbey! Reach across the centuries to Friar Jon Cor in 1494, through a modern distillery in an ancient site.

Lindores is fantastic for its whisky history, and what a setting!

100% - another of my favourites, and Glen Scotia also a fantastic experience nowadays. More distilleries to come, making a trip to Campbeltown essential.

I would say that there are two big factors that will affect a tour experience: who is doing the tour and who is guiding it. Enthusiastic beginners, long-term whisky nerds and mixed groups (containing people not interested in whisky at all) may find that their favourite distilleries are quite different. Being able to have one parent take the children around spotting hidden carved animals in the gardens may make Glen Grant a particular family favourite, for instance, whereas in-depth discussions of fermentation times, barley varieties and yeast strains at Holyrood may work better for geeks. (It has been so long since I was a beginner, I can't think of a good one for them...) Not wishing to shame anyone in particular, I won't say where, but I have been disappointed more than once by tours where the guide seemed under-trained or even downright bored! On the other hand, I was very pleasantly surprised at Clynelish, where the guide was able to cover the full range of questions from myself (a 'whisky spotter' of many years experience) and also my designated driver, who is teetotal, but interested in science and engineering. Just to give some other personal favourites: Laphroaig, Springbank, Glenfarclas, Wolfburn and Glengoyne all come readily to mind, for various reasons.

Good points Andrew - a lot of it depends on how geeky you want to get! I also loved my visit to Wolfburn, it's a long way and isn't the most traditionally scenic but a fantastic visitor experience - also handy if you're on the NC500...

Macallan put more money in stone then in their casks unfortunately. It is more a marketing hype these days.

Interesting perspective, it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea that's for sure
