One thing for secondaries is to still have confidence in your main. I've gone to a few tournaments and everytime I didn't feel to confident in my Mac even though I'm better with him and I practice more than him I switch to my secondary, Samus. And sometimes I'm not even warmed up with her or just haven't played her in a while but I still switch to her bc it's Samus and then I lose. I see a lot of top players struggle with this to like tweek. So practice being confident in your main as well 💪

Yonni is the one who goes for hard stuff and he has never achieved anything to the level of Acola. As Charles puts it, Acola is the fundies Steve. If someone with the patience to learn complicated tech and combos who also has his level of fundies decides to pick up the character, it's over for everyone. Or if Acola himself does decide to learn all of that stuff.

I've been debating between maining Joker and Sora for the longest time, but then I saw how Proto uses Min Min and Lucina as co mains for tempo. Even though my characters are harder on their own, Ive just decided to co main them and abuse the fact that the tempo between Joker being fast and slippery vs Sora which is slow and methodical can really throw people off

i just recently picked up rosa as a secondary for falco. you said how it’s good to have a tempo switch, and i completely agree. although rosa does counter a good bit of my bad MUs, i play her slow and campy while with falco i play super aggro. the rosa has helped me win multiple sets by taking it slow that i don’t think my main would have the tempo change is really important being something like a samus steve main people are going to be ready to play the camping game regardless

As a ROB main, I've had my fair share of ideas for secondaries such as Pikachu and Wolf since I think they're really fun. My biggest trouble as ROB has consistently been Bayonetta online and has made me put serious thought into who would work as a good secondary or co-main. Following Bayo's, G&W, Steve, and other's bad matchups I've always planned to play Shulk, which makes sense that you'd pick Cloud for Steve as a lot of what helps Cloud deal with Steve also helps with G&W/Bayo and fits in Shulk's toolkit. In Smash University's interview with Zomba on how to deal with G&W (as he'll obviously continue to run into Maister and Miya at the top level), he said he was choosing between Lucina and Shulk. Obviously, top-ranking sword characters seem to be the trend for ROB's bad matchups. He decided to go with Lucina as he felt his playstyle with ROB was fundamentals-heavy and would allow him to play Lucina at that top level more easily than trying to learn all of Shulk's tricks and abilities. He's also still learning and picking up ROB's own tricks as there are a plethora of gyro combos if you've ever seen a Lucretio video lol. I'm still learning fundamentals and ROB's toolkit myself so it'll be a while before I actually pick up another character but considering the lack of Shulk players providing an advantage as far as matchup checks go, I also feel his Meta hasn't fully developed because of this as well and I can see myself having better results long-term with him as opposed to Lucina or Ike. Cloud is definitely a potential though.

I main Wolf and it’s been pretty tricky finding a secondary for him given that you can pretty much play Wolf in a ton of ways. I feel like Wolf struggles against characters who can disrupt his game plan of controlling the tempo of the game and characters getting in his face. Currently I have Aegis as my secondary to deal with MUs like Steve, Sonic, R.O.B., Sheik, and the Shotos, but I’ve also been considering having the likes of Cloud, GnW, or even Terry as a secondary. What do you all think?

Been a solo rob main for most of ultimate’s life and I know that solo rob can handle anything even his few terrible matchups but recently the idea of having a second bracket ready character (and also just a character to help me better understand neutral) has felt really appealing to me. No idea who it should be though. Or more accurately, too many ideas. Mythra would be super easy, Ike as mentioned in the video is a possibility, even someone like Rosalina intrigues me even though she’s like the most secondary unfriendly character in the game, I don’t know maybe I’m overthinking it and I’ll just grind out the tough matchups with solo rob. fuck mario and game n watch

I disagree, I don’t think Ike actually does that good against gnw in the current meta because gnw advantage state has been RIDICULOUSLY improved since pre quarantine. I think a better pickup is lucina imo

Cloud is probably better for GaW, he’s kind of a powercrept Lucina. Lucina gets juggled crazy hard and GaW has good tools for dealing with her spacing poorly or jumping too much. Cloud being faster helps a lot too.

cloud minmin and aegis are all great choices, and you could go with someone like rob if you are worried about the recovery aspect

Isn't Cloud one of the most commonly played characters? Has Acola ever lost to any Cloud players besides Sparg0? Are you sure it's not that Sparg0 counters Acolo instead of Cloud? People keep saying Cloud is good vs Steve, but I never see other Clouds beating Acola besides Sparg0. Maybe I just miss all those sets where other Clouds knock Acola into losers.

A good example of what Benross is saying is a set between Nao and Acola at maesuma top 12. Acola won 3-1 without much trouble. Nao is far from being a bad player, but his Cloud is only a secondary. However, Nao's Cloud is plenty enough to deal with any Steve player he might encounter in pools, and it's good for other bad Mario matchups.

Well then it seems to me claiming Cloud counters Steve underplays Sparg0's skill. Cloud is one of the most popular characters in the game. Until another Cloud can start beating Acola, I say it's Sparg0 beating Acola, and not Cloud beating Steve. Seems to be a safer bet, and it happens to be more respectful to Sparg0. After all, there are a lot of Clouds, but there is only one player in the world that can consistently beat Acola.

Imo, I don't think Mii Brawler is an easy secondary. Typically, the "easy" secondaries are the ones with large hitboxes, like Cloud and other swordies. Mii Brawler has too small hitboxes and too complex combo routes (outside of the most simple of thrupper combos) to be an easy pick-up for most players. That said, if you already play complex combo characters or are used to having a more "up close and personal" gameplan, than Mii Brawler might be a great secondary for you!
