Based on my experience I feel confident having installed this shower pan with thinset, however Tile Redi recomends installing this shower pan (with the ribs) with mortar. @tilecoach has a great tutorial on how to install according to the brands recomendation 👉🏼kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqClmHaYhrt9aMk I spoke with the brand, they will be releasing new flat bottom shower pans in 2025 which you will be able to install using my method. I’m looking forward to testing it out, it will be an easier install for the DIYer, eliminating the use of mortar and tar paper. I will add links to the product when it becomes available. Cheers!

I'd recommend Tile Redi shower base for professionals to use too. These are awesome with the base pre-sloped to the drain. I've set the ribbed shower base over roofing paper with type N or S mortar, level it, come back the next day and the base is rock hard and ready for tiling.

A variation on your build...I'm making a second floor bathroom shower in a very old house (northern Saskatchewan) with floors sloping every which way, built on rough 2"x5.5" joists, 24" centers spanning, in most areas, 12 feet. What were those oldtimers thinking, but I digress! The owners originally wanted a tiled, linear drain shower floor (pebble), but were necessarily convinced of the need to have a solid preformed base. Purchased was an Ove Decor 36x48 acrylic base with a linear drain of sorts. Installation: the base was leveled using a wood screw under each corner. Then a 1" high 'form' (floor variation up to 5/8") was placed tight to the base on 2 sides (corner shower) and the drain isolated using styrofoam. For 'mortar', I used Mapei PlaniPatch (quick drying, but not truly self leveling) in an amount to be just proud of the screws. The base was set back in, now resting level on the screws with a small excess of Plani oozing up into the webbing underneath. All good. GK

I think I’m gonna install one of those tile ready pans at my house on a remodel problem is it is built on a slab so quite a bit harder to line up the drain. This is the one time I wish I had a subfloor.😂

I just watched the video. Not sure if there’s multiple ways to install but I used a barrier underneath to stop moisture from being absorbed into the wood and I placed 3 inches of thinset before putting the shower in place. “Today I work on” had a great video on it too. When I placed it it felt flimsy and cheap but next day was strong. I placed it first. Let it set for a few days due to having large amounts of thin set, so I worked on other parts of the bathroom during that time. U know more than me so u can go faster but anyone else doing this first time, going slow is way less frustrating
@HomeRenoVisionDIY2 ай бұрын
using the adhesive property of modified thinset means no need for a barrier and rock solid after 12 hrs. Cheers!

You didn’t put any blocking or support on the edges of that subfloor, especially along the right side opposite the drain? That had to be springy as heck. Would have failed inspection in my area. I was taught to always add blocking around any unsupported perimeter areas of the subfloor you replaced. Any time you cut out a section of subfloor you disrupt the structural integrity of the floor. Even between the joists I would add at least a 2x4 to support the edges of the subfloor you are replacing and under the edge of the existing floor where it was cut; that would be springy too. Bad news if it is tiled there and that’s where people step out of the shower. I know the floor is being covered by a shower base in this case, but that base needs support from underneath to be structurally sound, hence the mortar support that is required.

not enough thin/allset for that pan. Needs to be at a minimum, like 2 inches deep. Set a few dozen of these. That amount of allset is not going to bind that pan in place well.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY2 ай бұрын
I totally disagree. the manufacturer calls for mortar so of course they need to have way moe material since it does not bond to the product or the floor. Modified thinset is actually a bonding agent and since the pan is already structurally sound it makes more sense to simply bond it to a level base. Cheers!
@Jermz19792 ай бұрын
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY That's not the issue. The issue is that due to the way the pan is made, less than 10% is making contact when you use a thin bed of allset. It needs to be thicker so it adheres more up the walls of the ridges under the pan to make up for that. If you don't and you have even a slight shift between your walls and your pan, that minimal adhesion is going to break.

@HomeRenoVisionDIY3 ай бұрын
the flex was in thinset which pulls back to peak and make contact when dried. no problem.
@deriquez3 ай бұрын
It looked like the last 8 to 12 inches of the plywood base on the right side was overhanging the joist and completely unsupported. I would have taken a few extra minutes to support the right edge in order to avoid possible flex and future cracking.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY2 ай бұрын
this shower base is already a structural element so it was not needed. as long as there is ma joist every 16" you are fine, especially when using an adhesive thinset to bond tom the floor. Cheers!
@alex.mason77744 ай бұрын
Which morter you put
@HomeRenoVisionDIY3 ай бұрын
I didn't use a mortar. Mortar is used in installs that require additional structural support. since this base is so strong and solid I decided to improve on the installation and used schluter AllSet to bed the pan with. My base is level strong and not moving anywhere.

I definitely would have added another floor joist along the back end, (far right in the video) and some blocking just right of the drain area. Your plywood is cantilevering too far to have tile going on it even in that pan and not have it flex and crack the grout. Just my opinion but you can't take any chances on the floor flexing when it comes to tile, ESPECIALLY in a shower floor!
@rahlholm27 күн бұрын
You installed that base wrong ,you're supposed to use mortar ,so it fill all the channel underneath the pan
