The Pug 1.9 was and still is a looker. The Pininfarina design really stands out, also in 1993 I think, plus the "there is no substibute for cubic inches" recipe made it fast and reliable. Great choice that.

My hot hatch heyday! Having owned a Civic 1.6 VTi 3dr, Fiat Uno Turbo ie Antiskid, Clio 1.8 16V (Williams clone), then a Fiesta 1.6Si 3dr and a Pug 205CTi 1.9 in the 1990's. My pick - Uno Turbo ie Antiskid, then the Clio 1.8 16V if I *HAD* to buy new. If I could buy used it would be the Mazda 323 Turbo 4WD Lux. My most enjoyable hatch was the 1997 Civic Type-R 3dr in white (1.6/185hp) 🥰

What a brilliant series. I've driven all of these cars. Not necessarily in sports trim, but I have driven a version of each one. They're all fantastic, especially compared to modern rubbish, but let's get serious. There is only one true hero on this list, and that car is the Peugeot 205 GTi. I'd personally have it in 1.6 guise though, just because they're a bit lighter, and handle better as a result. Absolutely fabulous car.

Lee, back at that time I used to work for a Vauxhall dealership in London. I was lucky enough to have been given a Nova GSI, and made sure that it ran on four star petrol only (remember the days before unleaded, as it did not have a catalytic converter), an absolute bowl of fun and brilliant and the only card that I ever got caught speeding in. The copper stop being said " good evening sir is your name Nigel Mansell ?"... Also had a guy who came over from working for Peugeot, and he swore by the 205 GTi and I have to admit I would certainly agree with him, a legendary car and brilliant fun to drive...🚗🚗

I had a 205 1.9 GTi and hands down it has to be top of the list, always loved hot hatches, currently have an M140i which lets be honest isn’t a hot hatch really but if I had to pick between the two the 205 wins every time. Took an Uno in swap once and the guy had fitted a variable boost and it was hilarious, torque steer central but that little engine was a peach. The Clio’s were always great but the early ones including the Williams versions were quite heavy feeling controls for a tiny car I always found.
