There is no better season to have your best days of fishing than in the spring! In the spring the smallmouth can eat just about anything. The fishing can be so good that sometimes it is difficult too narrow it down to a couple of baits. In this video I break down some of our favorite smallmouth spring/spawn baits in the shop that catch fish day in and day out this time of year! Coming from a midwest smallmouth guy when they get turned off on the swimbait dont forget about the old curly tail grub. Some of my best days have been on a 4 inch curly tail just slowly reeling it on bottom.

On the great lakes/other open water scenarios I love to put a straight shank worm hook on a Ryugi swimming sinker TG football head to make a tungsten exposed hook wobble head. Add a swimbait like a 3 or 4” spark shad or rythm wave and you now have a badass goby/sculpin/perch dragging lure that they absolutely crush. Sometimes I even slide a 2 or 3” tube over the swimbait before rigging it on the hook for an ever bulkier presentation. Obviously craw trailers work too, and you can use EWG hooks if you need more weedless presentation as well

I agree Ben ... The Drop Shot has allowed me to catch some great bed fish , especially Largemouth . I came across a flat last year that was like a Smallmouth orgy retreat lol ... Every 20 ft we came across a Smallie locked on . The males started to pick up our weight and move it off the bed or they would suck it in and blow it right back out . I tied on a finesse 3/16 Tokyo Rig and I started hooking up . I was wondering if you have had kinda the same experience ?

Here in Northeast Ohio besides going out on a boat in lake Erie (which I don't even have lol) We have almost all of our smallies in the rivers. Those fish are a different breed and fight incredibly hard !! love throwing a 1.5 squarebill, and starting last year I know cautiously throw my jackhammers in and around the rocks for some chunky river small jaws.... Don't underestimate the whopper plopper for them either my friends. 110 has caught me many good quality fish. ✌☮

As much as I love a rigs, I’m not a fan this time of the year for smallmouth. I see it having the opposite effect on them until they’re through spawn. But that’s just me 👊🍻
