Watching Brian B, I know you can feed large Retics and Burms rabbits and small pigs. You could probably feed those species whole chickens too, although I don't know if they normally eat birds in the wild or if birds are even good for them. But, based purely on size (bot the snake and chicken) they're physically capable of eating a chicken.

If we're gonna be technical, green anacondas also eat capybaras. So... the largest living species of snake does indeed eat the largest living species of rodent. Go figure.

Thank you for clearing up the myth about egg eating snakes drinking whisked up eggs from a bowl. I found a baby egg eater at an expo, and the seller said it would drink whisked up eggs. Many people have gotten eggies, thinking they are easy - then watch them starve. They SOUND easy to care for (and an established adult female is pretty simple), but males, or juveniles, or heaven forbind hatchlings, are a real challenge. There are 3 reliable sellers of finch eggs in the US that will ship eggs - and this summer all 3 had a waiting list at the same time. I do have some eggies (2 females, 1 male, and 9 eggs in the incubator) and the facecbook group for their owners is full of people who got them assuming they could find small eggs, or who got them on a whim from a seller who claimed they could be fed scrambled egg from a dish. Tube feeding is hit or miss - sometimes it works well, but it is very easy to overfeed this way, and can cause more harm than good, and under the best of circumstances, it is still stressful for the snake.
@vincenttrigg4521
@vincenttrigg4521 4 жыл бұрын
@@karencostanzo2906 while tube feeding would be stressful for the snake it's better that then letting them starve to death right?
@karencostanzo2906
@karencostanzo2906 4 жыл бұрын
@@vincenttrigg4521 Of course - if you know how to do it. Sadly, if you do it incorrectly, or feed too much, you can kill the snake, and if you do it too often, they may not start to eat on their own. Anyone serious about keeping egg-eaters should prepare for the possibility of also keeping birds at some point in order to keep them fed.
@vincenttrigg4521
@vincenttrigg4521 4 жыл бұрын
Fairchild, as explained in the video, you would really only want an adult female unless you have access to finch eggs or bird eggs of similar size. Problem they also address is that if you get adults then you don't know how old they are. Basically better to get the finch birds and have them laying eggs before getting the snakes. Edit: originally said the males can eat quail eggs because I swear they said it in the video but many are saying they are still too big of eggs
@karencostanzo2906
@karencostanzo2906 4 жыл бұрын
@@vincenttrigg4521 Nope - need SMALLER than quail eggs for young or male snakes. But you are correct - having finches laying before getting these snakes would be a good idea. (And if yours can take quail eggs, there is a marlet to sell the finch eggs you no longer need.)

I keep aquatic snail as pets and there are several kinds that would work well as feeders for dekay's brown snake that are SUPPER easy to care for and breed such as malaysian trumpet snails and rams horn snail. So long as they have relatively clean water and some kind of food they will breed (I would recommend adding some cuddle bone to help with there shells if possible). That way you could rase your snakes food and know that it is pericite free and has been feed a good diet.

@@emmalou9067 I'd talk to a ball python breeder. ask if what they are feeding their hatchlings. make sure they are feeding fresh killed or frozen thawed rats (find one that is). this means they are already used to rats (it can be hard switching from mice) and it's already on killed (not live) and those are the biggest starting obstacles for a picky ball python. they also sometimes just go off food when your house gets a bit cooler in winter even tho they are not a brumating species

Something to note about snakes that eat worms/slugs and other inverts (including crawfish, though unsure about scorpions lol) is that they're relatively easy to create colonies of as feeders yourself. Obviously some people don't want to keep pets *for* their pets-- but especially earthworms and nightcrawlers are very easy to get a breeding colony going! They're essentially composters for all your food waste :) While it can be difficult to source food for snakes that are picky/unique eaters, just getting a couple to start and raising them as breeders yourself can be much simpler. It's a project for sure, but possible with less challenging feeders!

I was in the same boat as you. I had pet rats, mice, and hamsters all through middle school and high school. I finally got a snake 7 months ago, because I realized I could feed frozen thawed. Feeding rodents is a lot easier if you know they had a humane death. I buy from online rodent distributors with good reputations for treating their rodents humanely. Feeding dogs involves dead animals as well, it just doesn't look as bad since the dead animals are ground up into kibble. So really, as long as the rodent was culled humanely, it is no different from feeding a dog or a cat
@cawareyoudoin7379
@cawareyoudoin7379 4 жыл бұрын
@@Katie-xl8fd Yeah. My mother would never be able to have a snake, because you'd have to feed it mice or rats, but she's had a dog, and we have dogs now, and somehow she doesn't have a problem with feeding them meat, or eating meat herself. If she had to cut the pig up herself, it would probably be a different deal. Now I feed my dogs raw chicken wings, and I chop them up for them to be easier to eat. I think I could manage feeding a snake mice, or even having a colony of mice. You want pets, you have to deal with what they eat. If you want a herbivore, get a bunny, or a cow, or something.

if you're really committed to getting a snake, you do become desensitized to the rodents pretty quickly. I've had two snakes for years and I love my little dudes. The dead mice and rats were pretty gross at first, and tbh I still will only hold them with tongs and get super grossed out if I accidently touch them, but I hardly think about it anymore.

You know, I always find it funny to see how tarantula breeders react to my experience with tarantulas. I point to species that are for experienced keepers only and say "Oh hey, this is one of the first species I started with". It always shocks them and I have to explain I interned at an insectary, that being said I still had little training and it was a lot hands on experience right then and there, hit the ground running type deal. However I do have to say this, the only reason I could comfortably, confidently, and correctly care for the more advanced species right off the bat is because of my love for animals and years of studying different species (not necessarily care, but just generally), co-workers and other people ask me about good starter pets for kids and in all honesty, I always tell them that there is no good starter pet for kids. It should be more oriented as a family pet that the kid helps to take care of. AND ALWAYS DO YOUR RESEARCH! I hate when people want to get a pet and then know nothing about that animal.

As far as pet snakes that don't eat rodents I think one of the best is probably Northern, Brown, or Banded Water snakes. They get to a decent size, typically calm down after having/handling them for a while, and can eat only fish and worms. The largest problem with them is finding ones that are captive bread, but I know there are at least a few breeders out there, and honestly I might get into breeding them eventually.

I’m so excited you made this video. I got a rough green snake from from my local pet store because garter snakes are actually illegal to sell in Washington. I’ve only had Salazar about 3 weeks but I was so excited to see the other day a poop which means he’s eating at least! I didn’t know it was such a hard snake to keep as I couldn’t find almost any information on the internet which meant I had to rely on the local pet store which luckily is very good. He’s currently in a 29 gallon but I want to upgrade him once I know he’s reliably eating. He still has a lot of hides and trees and even substrate but I want to be able to find him quickly if need be. Since I’ve already made the mistake and brought the snake into my care I will do whatever I need to to give it the best chance. Do you have any tips at all?
