The new construction clay situation is so frustrating and no one else online is talking about it. Really appreciate your videos on this issue.

It really is. I can't stand seeing new lawns destroyed because the soil is so bad. It's sad the amount of work that needs to be done to a new lawn to help ot thrive.

I noticed this when they built two houses in my neighborhood. Mine was built 40 years ago but it was the same process when I saw them lay sod on top of crappy construction grade dirt that had been graded or anything it made complete sense. My entire yard has washed away, nothing but sand and clay after 3-4 inches. This video is going to bring my yard back to life!

I built a new house in the Houston area 2 1/2 years ago on 3/4 acre. Builder filled lot with sand / clay mix. I had 18 wheel truck load of St Augustine installed around the perimeter of the house ( about half the yard). Also had irrigation installed in the same area. I had 5 dump truck loads of real topsoil from a local pasture spread over the clay / sand mix and leveled for the rest of the yard. The area where the topsoil is leveled is well maintained common Bermuda. Appears to be some of the same issues with ST Augustine you have demonstrated in some of your videos (thin, lots of bares spots ) . Where the topsoil and Bermuda live i have supplemented volunteer Bermuda with seed common Bermuda. It does just fine even with Texas heat and no irrigation. Trying to figure a way to fix the ST Augustine. Maybe an experiment with the soil mix is in order? I actually saw my neighbor throw down a dozen bags of compost /manure mix on a bunch of bare spots . My situation is worse than his though.

Watched your prior video on black kow and play sand. Used it on a few problem areas in my St. Augustine lawn. Reapplied twice (probably didn’t apply enough first time.) Grass is coming in well and no needless resodding. Thanks!

Chad is 100% right. I have used both of these products and it works. The Command is kind of expensive……..I paid around $16 a bag so I was mixing the black cow and play sand. I would put it down and then go over it with a lawn leveler to smooth out any bumps or dips in the grass.

These mixes work great. I'm glad they helped you in your lawn.

Anywhere there is construction there's going to be compaction. I love black kow but I use their topsoil which is sandy/loam like to fill in spots in my yard. The only vice I have for their topsoil is that it does have weed seed in it.
@bettercallchadd7 ай бұрын
Yess!! I need to check that out!! The original black kow can have some seeds in it as well.
@AntoineClaquin-cf2hd7 ай бұрын
Great video! New construction is mostly a plot of land that has been cleared, stump ground to a minimum, fill dirt brought in (clay included or not) first 1-6” fill dirt depending on wether previous low area. Horrible for lawns/gardens. Soil needs to be amended in order to have success. It takes time. Sod/ seeded is only a temporary solution. Soil needs attention
@bettercallchadd7 ай бұрын
Absolutely!! This is happening everywhere. Everyone has does the soil has great success.

How do you add sand to an established st Augustine lawn. Do you aerate? And put the sand in the holes? Or do you remove the current sod and lay down new soil the put down new sod?

I’m in south Texas and a new home owner. St Augustine grass got laid out about 3 months ago but there’s also other types of grass in patches and some weeds. I also have an uneven lawn that’s quite bumpy. I was wondering what should deal with first, the bumpy lawn or weeds/different grass?
@graysongrzybowski9432 ай бұрын
I started putting this grass into my back yard but the soil is really dry and compact. I dont think it’s going to make it. If i go and mix it with a soil it can grow in should i be okay ?
@christinebowen89763 ай бұрын
I added a very thin layer of black Kow to mt st Augustine grass to help thicken up a dew areas and now those spots have weed galore, but weeds were never an issue in thise spots 😖. Any ideas why? my local nursery sells command, thats going to be my next go too.
@DesignBuildFixReview4 ай бұрын
Is it normal for the Black Kow to have so many sticks and mostly compost in it? I was thinking more like mud in the past. I have a company do my lawn the past 8 months and had sod worms or something show up last month. St Augustine has like bald spots like a bald guys hair with a few hairs still there in some small areas. Will the sand and manure fill those areas back in. Its odd like the lawn guy missed a 3 foot section by 75 ft of the back of the yard. Looks brown and burnt.
@bettercallchadd3 ай бұрын
Yes, it is. That's why it's good to mix it with sand. If the area is bare, it won't help. I'd the area is thin it will. You need existing grass in the area to fill back in.

Hello, I would like to ask how to add sand to the soil. Should I spread the sand directly on the soil? If you have a video show, I would be very grateful.

My first question is whats causing the soil to be "wet" as you described?
@bettercallchadd7 ай бұрын
It's the bland of clay sand they use as well as compaction. All three of these factors cause the water to sit and not drain through as it should.
@hankwest56627 ай бұрын
How much comand would need to be added per 1k sq ft?
@bettercallchadd7 ай бұрын
It depends on how rough the lawn is. I would say, on average, 1 yard per 1,000 sqft.
@dannymartinez85227 ай бұрын
@bettercallchadd if it'd 1 yrd per 1000 sq ft how many bags of sand and compost of each would you need?

Should I be concerned about adding this mixture with sand to clay soil and it then turning cement like? I’ve seen a lot of opinions elsewhere and it is not advised. I’m in SE Texas.
