When I pick up my 12 strings I’m inspired by The Byrds and the Beatles. Always wondered why George Harrison didn’t use a 12 on Here Comes The Sun. Love the sound of that guitar. Looking forward to your review.

I just found out that there is a 12-string on Norwegian Wood. It's barely there and it's only used for some accents, but it's definitely there. George also used and electric 12 on While My guitar Gently Weeps. He doubles Paul's bass line in the bridge. :)

I don't think George used a 12 string on anything the Beatles recorded after " If I needed someone " in late 1965. Lennon played 12 string on a few songs in the later years. Polythene Pam was the last recorded Beatle song to have a 12 string on it . I agree an Acoustic 12 string on Here Comes the Sun would have been Lovely to hear

Hey T. So...I TOTALLY MESSED UP. I forgot the most important part of the entire video. In my haste I omitted a hugely important detail. The guitar comes stock with the Baggs Anthem. I only played the Anthem one time and that was at NAMM on a very expensive Martin. It always gets the highest marks as far as sounding the most natural. Honestly, I think it's the ONLY pickup I've ever used that doesn't sound like crap. Anyway, everything I recorded here, I recorded direct. No miking. Amazing don't you think? Mark

Glad to see you back with another terrific video. I didn’t recognize a couple of the tunes, but they ALL sounded great. The guitar looks and sounds as good as any. Looking forward to your detailed review. I still don’t get the gold hardware as it always tarnishes, but man that’s a great sounding guitar.
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe Ай бұрын
it's so funny that you mention gold hardware. I was just looking on reverb to see how much my 88 Les Paul might be worth. I assume that it's in good condition at best because the gold hardware is all pity but apparently anybody that's ever on the guitar has the same problem therefore it's pretty much understood when you buy one that you're either gonna get a guitar that's not all original or you're going to get pits. Just don't swallow them. Ask Zachary Taylor

Hey Al. I found out about it by accident. Since I started selling the Rok-Lok I've been trying to watch a good amount of shark tank. I read that O'Leary and Herjavec got their start on the Canadian version of the show called Dragon's Den. I saw an episode of it come up on youtube. Coincidentally, in the episode M and M fool Kevin O'Leary into thinking that he's playing a $4000 Martin!

Mark, you were absolutely right about the sound! It's well-balanced without the usual boomy bass of a lot of acoustics, yet the highs sounded natural. I had only heard of this brand for their classical guitars, so I'm impressed. Kind of how I remember my long-ago Giannini Craviola 12 string back in the 70's. I'm definitely impressed with this one. Your playing helps a lot, too. Incredible as always!

Hey James. The one thing I totally forgot to mention, and it's VERY important...the guitar comes loaded with the baggs anthem pickup (the industry standard and not cheap at $400 plus installation). Everything I recorded was direct. I NEVER record acoustics direct but the darn thing sounds spectacular! Do you still have the Giannini? I remember that you have/had one. Page made some nice records with that guitar! Take care and be well. Mark

@@8MinuteAxe No, Mark, I stupidly got rid of the Giannini about 40 years ago. Missed it ever since. Had a neck like a 2x4, but sounded great. I like that Baggs pickup. Heard that on a few other guitars. That Algonquin, though, had to have the tone, or Baggs couldn't pick it up. Again, great video!

hey Michael. I actually had never heard of the company and I was just tooling around KZbin and I came upon a video for Dragon's den. Since I invented the rock lock I've been trying to Watch shark tank on a regular basis and I read that Kevin O'Leary and Robert Herjavec both got their start on dragons den. It's a Canadian show. MacKenzie and marr or a Canadian company. In the episode that they appear on O'Leary is fooled into thinking that they are guitar is a four thousand dollar Martin. The guitar really is incredible value. And you know I don't do paid reviews. I try to be as objective as possible although let's face it how objective can we really be when we actually have the instrument in our hands. Sometimes I want to scream "this time I REALLY mean it". I would put that moniker on this guitar and the Sire guitars. Truly great value. Thanks for always supporting. I truly appreciate your time. Be well. Mark

Hey Don. Thanks so much for the encouragement. My wife and I checked out Jeff Lynne and ELO on Saturday night. Jeff is 76 but walks around like he's 106. I'm glad I was able to go to the show as I would be so very surprised if this isn't their final Tour. My wife is not a big music person. She recently discovered harvest moon and she absolutely loves it. You mention the French Canadian songs. Are you familiar with harmonium? I'm sure you are. Viewer turned me on to them several years ago. Their first album is one of the great examples 12-string use huge sounding guitars. You say you stumble through stuff. I'm sure you're being colloquial but here's a quick recommendation. Take one or two songs it doesn't matter how simple they are take them slowly and absolutely nail them. If you're like me and most of the students I've had over the years I think that will bring you the most satisfaction. Just my two cents and it's worth exactly that. Hey Steven. I believe you know this, but I am a huge Joni Mitchell fan. She is in my big 5. Beatles, Steely Dan, Joni, Van Morrison, and Led Zeppelin. it seems that many Rick Beato among them always point to her mid late 70s work where is she turned towards more jazz oriented style with Jaco and Pat but Hejira is the first album I'm not a huge fan of. I think that her run from Clouds to The Hissing of Summer Lawns is the third greatest streak of albums ever... After the Beatles 12 album run and Zep 1 through Physical Graffiti. Although when wouldn't know it by watching my videos I've been focusing on finger style in the traditional Chet Atkins style for the past five or six years. My Atkins reed Emmanuel buster B Jones boom chick is starting to get pretty good. Just when I was feeling pretty good about myself I started going into modern finger style i.e. Mike Dawes. Michael Hedges was a freak. Mike Dawes is from another planet. Be well and take care...and keep in touch! Mark

@@8MinuteAxe Now you see there? You've returned the favor, 'cause now I'm gonna have to go look into Ralph Towner . . . Anyway, (the late) Stan R. is one of my singer-songwriter heroes. From the Canadian Maritimes, he came onto the modern-folk scene in the early 70's, with his booming baritone and a bunch of original material, mostly focussed on his home region. He passed away in an airline crash in the mid-80's, at the height of his career. All that said, I won't be disappointed if his music isn't your style, but you might just like it. Another one of his songs to check out - _45 Years._ His kid brother Garnet, who played fiddle in Stan's band, became quite a talented singer-songwriter on his own, after his brother's death.

Sounds like you got a winner there, Mark! My son had purchased a Vangoa 12 string for me last year, since I couldn’t get lucky enough to win one 😂. If these are as good as you say? I may consider buying one!

Very interesting choice of 12 string songs. In looking at your list of 12 string guitars that you have I was just wondering what happened to your Reverend 12string?

Hey Lee. Great guitar. I've considered picking one up used but I currently own fifteen 12-string guitars and I'm going to have to knock down a wall before I buy another one. Thanks so much for checking out the video. My Reverend is still my go to electric BUT...I just got a Schecter TSH 12 and it required a lot of blood sweat and tears (the first time I ever did luthier type of work on anything) so I'm partial to it right now. You can't beat the Reverend for variety of sound. It makes a big difference when you build a guitar from the ground up to be a 12-string vs slapping 12-strings on a 6. Thanks so much for your time. Take care. Mark

Would love to see the tabs/Chords, I have an Ibanez 12 string that i purchased in 1981, still sounds great but need one or two new machine heads. Im going to see if i can work out the chords you are using, you sound great.

Thanks Mark, was the guitar plugged in or mic'd? Love the jumbo or mini jumbo body shape for a 12. Enjoying the fresh take on these tunes.

Hey Pete. That's a great question and honestly, I really messed up on the video in that I didn't mention the fact that everything was recorded direct with the Baggs Anthem pickup. The pickup is so good. The best acoustic pickup I've ever heard BY FAR (I just picked up a Fishman Rare Earth Blend so we shall see). I really appreciate you checking out the video and calling attention to that. I'm going to do a full review of the guitar soon so I'll have a chance to point out how great it sounds plugged in. Take care and have a great weekend. Mark

What is the guitar hanging on the wall over the rack in the background. Looks a lot like a Cole Clark I have.

Hey Pete. The koa guitar? It's a Taylor GS Mini custom. It's a regular GS mini but it has an upgraded pickup, koa bridge pins, koa tuner caps, and an original truss rod cover that the guy that owned it before me had handmade by an artist in Nashville. I played the smaller Cole Clark at NAMM last year. What a great sounding guitar. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time. I hope you have a great week. Mark

Not really familiar with McKenzie and Marr. For a moment from the video thumbnail, there was a part of me that thought to my eyes that it was a classical or nylon string 12 string due to the body shape.

Hey Zach. It's definitely a unique shape. It's jumbo-esque but more compact. It plays almost as easily as the Taylor 452 which is the short scale 12.

You asked the most important question of all. I messed up. The entire reason for making the video was to show off the fact that the Algonquin comes with a STOCK Baggs Anthem! This is the FIRST TIME EVER that I recorded an acoustic (12 string or otherwise) by using the pickup direct and not a mic. I meant to make that big part of the video and I ended up not mentioning it at all. Dumb mistake. I've heard great things about the anthem. The only time I ever played one before was that the name show and it was loaded into a very high-end Martin so it was tough to tell what was responsible for the amazing sound. I'm pretty picky when it comes to acoustic pick ups and I rarely use them. As much as I love Taylor guitars and as much as I think the ES2 is an improvement over the old Fishman system they used to use it still doesn't do their are guitars justice. Thanks for bringing that up. Very important. I sincerely appreciate your time and comment. Have a great week and please take care. Mark

I did a search afterwards and found pickups were an additional option. Very helpful to know they're worth having. Lovely sound.

Hi Mark. Have you played Martin HD 12-28? Getting ready to buy one and am curious how you think it compares to the Algonquin. Thanks! Great video buy the way!! Bill.

Simple answer - standard shape instead of a dreadnaut. For the life of me, I don't understand why dreads are so popular. The sound is unbalance and bass heavy. A concert or standard shape is simply sweeter sounding.
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe Ай бұрын
I agree with you. Martin loves to dreadnaut/dreadnought everything. LOL. I believe it's closest to an Orchestra. Whatever it is, it's super comfortable. My Takamine jumbo is very difficult for a small person to play (I'm 5 6). I really struggle with it even when I set the action in the sweet spot. You are 100% correct. Thanks for checking the video out and for weighing in. Take care and have a great week. Mark

I have one of each type. My mahogany parlor is really suited for finger picking and my dread is usually used for accompaniment strumming. Each one has a purpose and excels in a specific sound.

Hi Mark, nice video as usual…I know you are familiar with many brands of 12-strings. I am interested in a couple I haven’t seen on your channel yet…the Hagstrom Viking 12, Guild Starfire IV 12 with minihumbuckers, and the Rivolta Combinata 12. Though the Hag is less expensive than the other 2, interested because it has a wider neck than most electrics. Any interest in reviewing these?

It's not actually a jumbo. I need to measure it. It's a unique shape. I'm only 5 6 and the Takamine is murder to play (it's so big it's almost not worth even breaking it out). This guitar is almost as comfortable as the 452.

I play Norwegian Wood on my Martin 12 string but I use a capo that can just bar the bottom (A down to E) strings leaving the 11/12th strings open so they can play the bass D note. Try it, you'll never go back.
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe Ай бұрын
You're kinda playing in drop d the hard way. I play it in drop tuning as well. If you get greater tuning stability capoing all six and dropping. When I'm playing live I'll usually do rocky mountain high (also capo2 drop), never going back again (capo 4 drop), ooh la la (7 drop). I use partial capos for a couple of Leo Kottke songs. And you're absolutely right, the low d allows for a pedal that's very much like George's sitar. Thanks for the tip. I appreciate the support. Take care. Msrk

@@8MinuteAxe Great to talk to you. I've been playing on stage for over 55 years so we're "birds of a feather". One other thing I've noticed (which makes sense once I discovered it) is that if you capo a 12 string anywhere near the nut, the low E string will go sharp because it's thicker so the tension on it is a bit higher than the 11th E string. Same goes for the A strings but not so much. As a matter of habit, when I'm on stage with the 12 string and put the capo on near the nut, I automatically flatten the low E string a bit. Saves time. Cheers Mate.
