The only way to hold such a empire together is doing feasts regularly, doing the obvious grand tours and creating a hook on the strongest of them. Also you either have to change into a republic or create kingdoms which have only split inheritance.

She's much better than Haesteinn long term. Hasteinn is better at gaining quick land at the start, but he dies quickly and his son isn't too special. Matilda is younger and doesn't have enemies who want to kill her, she has a cool buff that makes all the clergy like her plus temple buffs plus a farmland and university which means money making machine. And then you just get hooks on the Pope and ask him to give you everything.
