As a former hairdresser and barber, I can confirm the buck. There's nothing better than really good tools for your trade. And while the Wahl is not particularly for your trade, I totally get all of the particulars on the barware. I even understand the flannel. It's good to have the proper tools for the job. The tools that fit right in your hands. Also, somebody who knows a bit about this once said, "... at the end of the day, if the drink you like is in the glass, you did it right." I feel like that applies to a lot in life. Thanks for all the videos, they're making 2020 a little bit easier to cope with.

As a Certified Bourbon Steward and aspiring whiskey somme, your commentary about gifting bottles is spot on - whatever you buy will be appreciated. Ask around for suggestions and ideas. Even if it's not the recipient's favorite, they will appreciate the thought and effort. I was once gifted a bottle of Beam black label and it holds an incredibly special place in in my heart, even against my bottles of Ardbeg Traigh Bhan, Knob Creek 15, Blood Oath Pact 6, or extremely limited cask strength barrel pick obscure craft stuff. Hell, I'll even buy another bottle of that Beam black and savor it just to have that reminder of that gift. Don't overthink it - booze is ultimately about indulgence and enjoyment.

I remember when I first heard of whiskey stones. I was dubious and not about to shell out $18 for some cubes of rock, so I just got some normal rocks, cleaned them, and put them in the freezer. It turns out that the specific heat capacity of rocks is very low. But I did look up the specific heat capacities of some other materials, and one of the highest is paraffin wax. I have not tried making wax cubes, but that could be an interesting thing to try.

Honestly, when it comes to gifted bottles, I'm always pleased to get one of the spirits I keep stocked at all times in the "well" portion of my home bar. I keep those eight bottles around for a reason: they're good in cocktails and I like them. I've been gifted Rittenhouse plenty of times for my birthday or Christmas and it always makes me happy, no matter how many times I've restocked it myself that year. My advice to home bartenders is to settle on the base spirits you want in your bar, decide which bottles you always want to have around, and then when people ask what to get you as gifts, point them in that direction.

I love your channel. For HighBall, .. I love glasses with a thick base of glass, .. b/c I love putting the glasses (with thick base) into the freezer .. so that when I make a cocktail, the thick glass base acts like one huge ice cube. So, one can take their time kissing their whiskey rather than rushing before the ice in the glass melts then dilutes. Also, .. I love finding cheap glasses that rich folk donate to such places as Value Village and Salvation Army (Sally Ann) etc. but one has to be real fast in the morning to coming across such a find. Sometimes glassware can be as cheap as 0.50 cents a glass which is a fraction of the original cost.

EXCELLENT video. What I’d love for Christmas is a garage setup like you have. It’s so awesome looking.

Really hilarious when talking about bar spoon lengths and you said it was long enough for you to “do the thing” and I knew exactly what you meant. “Yeah the bar spoon thing, got it.”

Thank you for this video. My husband has been interested in mixing drinks and some of this stuff would make some great gift items for him.

Belated Merry Happy. Great bit. Four books I recommend to novice bartenders (home or professional): The Official Mixers Manual, Patrick Gavin Duffy (out of print), The Bartenders Bible, "Gaz" Regan, Trader Vic' Bartenders Guide, and the Old Mr. Boston Bartenders Guide (pre-Sazerac, if possible).

I appreciated the barware section since you haven't talked too much on that in other books. I actually did watch your book recommendations video and put most if not all of them on my Christmas wishlist under something to read (those and Paul Hollywood's books on baking).

You're gonna have to burn that shirt like a flag when it finally wears out. And make a ridiculously dramatic video.

A relative did that with a signature ballcap they wore pretty much constantly as a kid. They actually kept the ash and melted plastic (from the brim) in a mason jar for a number of years. I had forgotten about this until scrolling past your comment just now. Wonder what they did with it when they moved out of town...

Thanks for this video, I feel I learned new useful things that I'll definetly keep in mind from now on when shopping! I'd rather find a good item that lasts than trial and error through multiple just because I don't know what I'm looking at. Marry Christmas to you :)

I'm glad to hear you say that about the razors. It lets us know that you won't endorse a product unless you actually use it. Now I'm on my way to get some Basil Hayden's to put in the Barfly shaker I'm ordering.

A little tip I've found using the leopold style jigger is you have to dip your hand and then turn to pour. Think of the curve of a J if you are left handed or just reverse for righties. You drop and pull away a little as you turn the the jigger. You want your pour to follow the line of a J. With a little practice the liquor will go pretty much where you want it. The tall jiggers are definitely easier but the leopolds are nice once you get the hang of it.
