What concerns me about these systems using proprietary bags is what happens if the manufacturer goes out of business, or comes out with a new system and stops support of the bags? Small companies do not always have a long life.

As these toilets become more popular, and I think they will, the bags will become cheaper. Modiwell makes a cheap knockoff sold on Amazon for $400-600. It looks like it uses similar plastic bags, but I don't know if they're interchangeable.

I've had a wrappon for 6 years now. They were in the USA before that as well and in Japan for even longer. They are a Japanese toilet and very common in Japan as a toilet for elder care or construction work and humanitarian aid. This is not a company that is just going to disappear one day.

Worth every penny! I was able to purchase just the working mechanism, it came with the toilet seat and we built it into a drawer in my van on 500Lb drawer slides so it's out of the way. My son rewired it so it plugs into a 12V outlet, we did not buy the adapter. I've seen this toilet built into vans in a drawer or placed set up, inside a bench with a top that opens and a door on the front so you can get access to used bag. You can leave it set up and just have it on the floor in your shower like any other toilet that is used in a van or RV and move it when you shower .If you are concerned about the price of bags, use a pee jug so you only use it for number two. I love that it's sanitary, it does NOT smell, and disposes of human waste in a responsible manner. I was sharing my toilet on a trip, long story short, I went on another trip 10 days after I got home and discovered a bag that had been left under the toilet.......there was absolutely NO smell or leakage and it was full of #2.. This toilet was developed in 2000 for disasters, healthcare, and construction etc. it is not one that was developed for the "Van Life" craze so getting bags should not be an issue. They also make a fold up version that is around $600 if $ and or space is an issue.

I love the large blackwater tanks with Macerator Pump System with Power Hose Reel. I had a rental camper van with a 16 gallon blackwater tank. It was comfortable to use and last almost two weeks in my case . Along the USA West Coast I found enough places to dump. But the blackwater tank size was good for two weeks of use off grid, if needed.

This product is just insultingly overpriced. $450 for the battery alone, then another $1,600 for the toilet...then the bags. I see a $500 product, anyone else?

You can buy the cheaper version for 600 usd. All of these toilet solutions are overpriced to begin with since you can poop and pee in a bucket. You are paying for convenience and "luxury". If you are already dropping 100k+ on a van why are you complaining about 2k usd? Makes zero sense to me.

Economies of scale, I highly doubt these companies are making enough profit to come down on price since RV/camping is still a very niche market. As someone already stated, this item is really marketed to individuals already spending over $100k

We have both the Laveo and Wrappon Trekker and absolutely love both. One we keep in our Van the other at our off-grid cabin. After trying every camping/RV toilet system available, from a hole in the ground to bucket to cassette to Porta potty to RV flush we found that for our particular usage and needs the Dry Flush system is the absolute best option. Obviously it’s definitely not for everyone because of initial cost and per flush cost. You’re paying for convenience, low maintenance/cleaning, excellent sanitary and a truly Flush and Forget experience. It’s definitely not a viable option for heavy use as the per flush cost will eat your wallet alive. We limit our use to nights and mornings and use campground bathrooms where available. On the road we use rest area and truck stop bathrooms etc. We end up spending an average of $20-25 bucks over a 3 day outing for two people which is tolerable for most. For perspective that’s one meal at a fast food restaurant, right? Surprisingly we’ve occasionally caught some flak from people about our toilet choice. Most centered over the costs associated with buying and running these things. The funny thing is during several of our outings a naysayers will come begging to use our “overpriced, over technical, fancy schmancy toilet” because nature sometimes calls when you least expect it to and the campground restroom is way across the campground and it’s a long cold dark walk. Sometimes it’s worth spending a buck and a half to use the facilities

We just spent a month living in a camper van in France. Had absolutely no problem with using a cassette potty. You dump it, and they have pressure hose stations to clean out the cassette if I spend five minutes doing it it was too long. In addition, if there is a level of water in the cassette, nothing really sticks too badly. I think your comment about the longevity of the unit, may be a bit premature. It uses a heating element to seal the bag those can burn out. And then you have a bag without a seal.

Very odd decision to make the flush button on a long wired remote like that...why not just a button on the side of the unit? And why so noisy? Night time deposits will not go unnoticed. :) Also, $1500 for the base unit when you have to pay for their proprietary bars at $1.50 per deposit. Seems like if they really want to make on-going money on the bags, they should make the base unit much cheaper.

The diaper genie is more like the Laveo. The Wrappon produces individual bags that can immediately be disposed of. I've had a wrappon for 6 years now that I use for camping. So much easier when you have to go. I don't have to deal with cleaning out nasty tanks of mine & others poop. Each person using the wrappon gets to take their baggy & take it to the trash. The battery price is stupid when any 12V battery will work I just use a small battery 9Ah AGM or 10Ah LiFePO4 battery (nor more than $20) to make mine portable as at remote campsites I like pooping with a view.

This would work well for us. With way our van is setup , the laveo is too high and our legs dangle. This toilet seems to be almost half the height without the legs. However if you use it without the legs, how do you remove the waste bag?
@VanLand
@VanLand 5 ай бұрын
People who use it without the legs have usually built it into the cabinetry where there is room for the waste to drop.
@zenosabsurdum

You must have space below for teh bags to drop & seal. So using it without the legs means you have it in a built in bench seat with ledges for it to sit on.

I was excited to see that there was another design for a toilet on the market. But realistically this is a waste paper basket. With a garbage bag in it except that that wouldn't take batteries and doesn't need electricity and cost less per flush. And I've used that method before and it works fine. But I will stick with my cassette toilet because I can use it multiple times. And it cost me a bit of water but I have water with me anyway. And it doesn't take plastic bags which don't end up in the landfill and so on and so on. Personally I think this thing cost too much and $400 for a battery pack is Insanity. Nice video though. I will keep watching.

Great video. Question: I would like to retrofit my Ekko cassette toilet by replacing the “suitcase “ cassette with the Trekker “guts.” This way I have the regular toilet “look”, ability to swivel the seat, and the individual waste bags are easily retrieved from the outside of the van when convenient. Do you think my idea is doable or impossible? I need to see the “guts” of the trekker without the outside box cage . Thanks! Keep up the great videos!

There’s just no perfect option. I like the idea of throwing everything away instantly but when that bag closes and lets out the air the stench must be worse than while you’re sitting there with it in the bag waiting for it to be over. I stay with the composting because the ventilation makes for zero odor always.
@cheryl7917

I have this toilet, the way the bag closes it does not shoot stinky air out, in fact it's the opposite, it sucks the air in, there is air in the bag after it's sealed and there is zero smell with the sealed bags.

I have used a wrappon for 6 years. There is no additional smell other than the smelly dump you just released. You also don't sit on the toilet waiting for it to seal. In fact yu are not supposed to sit on the seat while flushing. Stand up, flush, step out when you hear the beep come back & grab your bag. I modified mine to run on a simple 9Ah AGM battery. you don't need the offered Lion battery. You can also plug into a 12v DC port as well.

Good idea, but still not ready for primetime (at least for us). Hate cassette toilets, had one, and never again. For now, I think the Separett Toilet brand where urine is collected in a separate container makes more sense since you might only go #2 a couple times a day, and you can still bag and dump your waste as needed. My wife would go through these expensive bags in no time since she hates using public rest rooms. Maybe someday a company will design something truly functional and affordable.

It seems not only are the bags overpriced, but the entire thing seems overpriced and overly complex. I've done heat sealing and while it is nominally reliable, it isn't perfect and sometimes you get a bag that leaks. Completely automatic "consumer" grade equipment and relying on that for a toilet? No thanks! There has to be a better way, and that way may be just waste basket liners from a big box store. After you've done it a few times, it takes 30 seconds to tie the top of the bag into a knot, and a knot is really, really, really reliable. Does no one make a toilet that simply holds a standard 5 to 10 gallon waste bag? (Of course they do.) costco: cheapest $14/500 or scented kitchen bags (13gal) $20/200 -or- at home depot in stock near me: $7/50 or scented (13gal) $9/50 . While at the HD you might pick up an orange Homer bucket for $5 and a basic round toilet seat for $12. Some assembly required. I suggest a bungee strap around the outside of the bucket to hold the bag near the top. You can also pick up a 3lb bag of spill absorber for $7 and put a little scoop of that in the bag to soak up the liquid. A bucket is rather tippy, and etc, so you might consider that the HD website lists a portable camp toilet that uses trash bags, that for $80 looks more comfortable. (It folds up pretty compact.)

Junk…anything that has the chance of breaking down on you is not worth buying. When you do your business in this thing and it ends up not working, you sure don’t wanna have to clean up your own waist and try to fix this thing. Get a bucket, some biodegradable bags, coconut husks or kitty litter and make a nice cover for the bucket so you could sit comfortably on it. Do your business, throw some extra husks or kitty litter on top twist and seal the bag and throw it away at your next stop. After about 12 months, the whole thing will degrade out in the landfill and you won’t have to worry about it…stop overthinking something so simple.
