In this video I list the best antenna preamplifiers (aka signal amplifiers, signal boosters, ect) if you use an antenna for over the air TV. Keep in mind that preamps only make up for signal loss in a long coaxial cable. They won't magically bring in new channels that don't hit the antenna in the first place. Not everyone needs a preamp as setting one up in a strong signal area can lead to overload.

Just installed the $85 Televes pre amp and finally success bringing Philly channels in for my Bethlehem zip code 18017! After trying three differential antenna going bigger each time and limited success, so many trips up & down the ladder. Moved here 4 years ago and finally I can watch channels 3-6-10, NBC, ABC, CBS, 17, FOX, 29. Finally with help of Antenna Man I no longer can blame the nearby mountain for casting for a twilight zone when it came to receiving TV reception. 😊❤

I bought the Channel Master dual gain model a couple of years ago and it has been a solid build. I believe I’m running it on the high gain and haven’t had any issues. The only down side (if there is one) is that it tends to be harder to purchase because even when I bought it was frequently out of stock.

I have a longrange Telves antenna & the Telves preamp shown. Routinely receive signals from 87 miles with exact pin point alignment on a 20 foot pole which is the tallest allowed here. Best is that there are also within 30 & 40 miles strong signals which are not effected. I highly recommend Telves antenna's which are well manufactured & the Telves pre-amp. I live in a flat area huge amount of trees & with the earth curvature receiving these signals during the afternoon was once an impossible dream but since installation normal with only very occasional weather caused outages from the weakest stations.

I just got the televes single input model 560383 pre amp with the power distribution plug. I followed the directions and have the one line going to the pre amp from the antenna and the other going to the f connector/power distributor where it branches out to the tv. I turned the switch on and I don’t get a green light. If I hook up a small amplifier (no included in kit) with a coax cable and connect that to the pre amp then I get a green light. Can someone please tell me what the hell I’m doing wrong? 😂

spot on. I have the Televes pre-amp running the antenna to my den TV, and the RCA running to the Flex 4K in the upstairs guest room. both are working great. I always judged my pre-amps by how many channels they would pull in connected to an antenna off my deck mounted on a PVC pipe. The Televez won hands down. I liked Antenna Direct's JUICE pre-amp as well. During my trials, I ended up dropping it one time too many and it quit working. LOL.....

Another reason to amplify is if you intend to use a splitter to feed multiple TVs/DVRs. The common 2:1 splitter costs you about 3dB[1] of gain. You will often want to run a feed to the living room and one to a bedroom or something. From there, in the living room, there may be an additional split to feed a DVR along with the TV set. [1] the dB unit of gain is not a linear unit of measure. 3dB means the power got doubled. 6dB means the factor is 4 and 9 dB means a factor of 8. If you hook two splitters in series you get 3dB+3dB=6dB of signal loss AKA a factor of 4 on the power.

I made that mistake years ago with the old RadioShack preamps always thinking higher gain is better. I was wondering why the picture was wavy on certain channels back in the analog days. The answer back then was signal attenuators you could install inline just before the coax went into the TV. You could turn back the gain up to 20db. How nice it would have been to have a preamp with automatic gain adjustment.

Ideas for handling signal changes over different seasons? Even from day to day, morning to evening, some channels toggle between fine/perfect and marginal just by a 5 point HDHR signal shift. The signals become too strong in winter, after the solar equinox and the leaves fall, so I put attenuators in line - 3, 6, 9, 10dB, as needed.. Then in the spring, I remove them as leaves return. No attenuators used now (August). The required gaim-modification changes every few weeks in autumn and spring. Have an RCA pre-amp that seems to be adding too much gain. Think it is 20dB gain. With it, we get about 100 subchannels - a few are TOO strong for the HDHRs causing pixilation even with 1 splitter. Without the pre-amp we get about 15 subchannels total, so there's no question a pre-amp is needed. I've searched for reasonably priced variable attenuators or pre-amps. Looks like you get what you pay for.. Perhaps a pre-amp with fixed 10-15dB gain would better fit? Channels are between 17 and 52 miles away. Anyway, how do you handle seasonal signal changes as a professional?
@jpflu3754
@jpflu3754 Ай бұрын
Today I did some testing of different configurations. Initially, 133 subchannels were listed on the HDHR "scan" interface, but many of those were "iffy". Was using a DB4e pointed at 155deg and a yagi pointed at 335deg combined then used the $20 RCA pre-amp for a 50ft run to HDHR Quad and HDHR4 network tuners. Many of the signals were too strong, resulting in pixelated images. Of course, some were too week and also had pixelzation. About 50 subchannels were interesting. Remember, the RCA has about 20dB of gain. Got a Channel Master 7776u Pre-amp (11 dB gain) and installed it instead of the RCA. Reran the channel scan and got only 33 subchannels. A weaker amp definitely matters. Thought it could be the combiner so removed the yagi pointing for just 2 channels and did straight connections to only 1 of the HDHR tuners, the Quad. Recanned and got 50 channels with nearly all of them nearly perfect, if not perfect. Of course, ABC and the 4 sub-channels on it are bad. CW, CBS, Fox, NBC are excellent. Ion is completely gone. The too-strong signals are now perfect. I use the HDHR tuning android app. It has Signal Strength, SNR Quality and Sym Quality, which seem related to "enough" signal, but doesn't work for too strong a signal. Basically, when the SS is 100, that's likely to be too strong. Really desire 99 for the SS and steady 100 for both the SNR and SQ numbers. Around here, most of the stations broadcast on RF 18-29. Perhaps I need two antenna setups with 2 different amplifiers? One for the strong signals and 1 for the weaker signals. My media center software, Jellyfin, can choose which channel to get from which tuner, so it is just a matter of having another cable run from the attic to where the HDHR tuners are located. ABC (RF32) is just so bad. A local station "MyTV" on RF25 is pretty bad too. RF25 is a rebroadcast set of subchannels for affiliated stations of NBC, I think. Maybe next week I'll give up and go back to the RCA amp setup with the combiner. I have 3 antennas available - one is a custom, DIY, DB4 that I used for years. The whisker length was sized for the Hi-VHF channels here and works really well. Bought the Antennas Direct DB4e with Hi-VHF antenna and it is a little better - definitely better for an outdoor install than my DYI 2x4 and copper wire setup. ;) Some of the bad channels have huge swings in SQ and SNR going from 100 on each to 50 and 0 from second to second. This is during a sunny day, light breeze (under 2 mph). I just don't understand how the signals could vary THAT widely?

As a retired Navy TV repair man I can attest to much of what he said. I have a neighbor that has property in Palm Coast FL. He is not at this property enough to pay for cable. Sadly the closest TV signal is out of Daytona. He purchased an attic antenna and amplifier and is able to get 5 channels. I would like to get information on an antenna system that can bring on WiFi sources from open Wi-Fi networks. He is a Comcast customer and should be allowed to utilize one of Comcast's open Wi-Fi hotspot. He could then use that system with a streaming player for TV programming. I find it unacceptable that there are TV antenna's that can pick up signals 40 plus miles away but a open Wi-Fi connection that is 3 miles away is impossible to get. :(

I and a client have tested and found that the very low cost GE preamp is good. In my client’s situation he had both a strong station and a week one and after trying both Winegard and Channel Master the GE was the one that worked for him. I used to think that preamplifiers were only for compensating for cable and splitter signal loss but after testing the unique auto-gain adjusting Televes single-input preamp with a small Stellar Labs combination antenna and a short cable the difference in the antenna’s performance was so dramatic that I would not just think of it for compensating for signal loss.

Wondered why the antenna amp did not help. Discovered that the gain control is set by the strongest signal, and the amp covers VHF and UHF. So, because it had no FM trap, a strong FM station caused the amp to reduce gain, reducing the amplification of weak UHF channels for my digital TV stations. Unethical to sell amps today without FM traps.

I've watched a number of your videos and they are very informative. At home I mostly watch cable TV but I do have an OTA for back up when cable goes out. I also have a travel trailer that came with an OTA antenna and amplifier. I travel a lot up and down the east coast. What I have found out is that I get mostly the same content no matter where I travel. I usually get the locals, but get a lot and I me a lot of infomercials, Spanish speaking channels and duplicates, which I assume are both HD and non HD of the same channel. It doesn't matter how good an antenna works if the content your receiving is bad. Out of the 30 to 40 some channels I'll get, only one or two have something I want to watch. THIS, COZI, GRIT, Comet, LAFF, Newsy, QVC and HSN seem to be OTA everywhere. I don't see me giving up cable in the near future.

As someone who installed cable for 15 years Tyler really know his stuff. I lived near a mountain in Arizona a lot people in this one particular community would complain about poor signal for this one local channel and yet the antenna for this channel was less than 1/2 a mile away. The reason the signal was bad in this community was similar to someone with a microphone standing to close to the speaker causing feed back.. TV signal does the same thing. And just so you know WIFi can do the same also. So buy adding a TV amplifier can also cause problems. Think about what happens when you crank up the Amp when your listening to Led Zeppelin and Robert Plant’s voice in now causing your ears to bleed even more than they were before. The signal distorts and doesn’t improve the sound. Same applies to TV and wifi signal. 😂 Hope this analogy is appreciated. Thanks for all you do Tyler I have learn’t an incredible amount from your channel.

Almost 20 years ago I bought a Channel Master model 4221 4-bay UHF antenna and a Channel Master cheap preamp model that had built-in 300ohm to 75ohm balun. I believe that preamp gets about 15dB or so gain which is plenty for my setup with just under 100feet RG6 coax from the antenna in the back of the house to my garage where I have a 4way splitter and the preamp power supply. The splitter feeds the existing RG59 coax lines inside the house walls to 4 rooms, that was originally used for years with cable TV, but now after switching to cable internet only I use that instead for the split antenna signal to three TVs internal digital tuner and also to my PC which has a wintv tuner card. I figure the loss of the outdoor RG6 coax cable and 4 way splitter plus shorter runs of the indoor old RG59 cable is about or under the 15dB gain of the preamp so I get good signal strength and SNR at the TVs. Also my old 4221 antenna is able to receive the two high VHF signals in my area (channel 8 and 10) fairly well even with one hill that causes those VHF signals to have to bounce over it, compared to the UHF signals in my area that are further away but have line of sight so they come in stronger. My VHF channels I get 28-30dB SNR and the UHF channels I get 33+dB SNR and no dropouts or other issues. Luckily my house is at the top of a hill and near the highest elevation in my area about 800ft above sea level. Other houses nearby are way down the hill and would probably have very poor reception compared to mine. Because of my house's high elevation I've found I don't need a tall mast above the house, I get great signal with the low profile 4-bay UHF antenna mounted stealthily under the eaves of my house in the back using a Channel Master universal antenna mount that has a 44" mast included that I have mounted up-side down. In my area of north San Diego county, the two VHF channels come from slightly west of south while all the local UHF channels come from south east so I have almost 60degrees between those two TV broadcast locations. The 4-bay UHF antenna handles that wide coverage well without a rotor!

Have a Winegard flatwave air on my home and it performs flawlessly, but I recently purchased the winegard rvw sensar IV and it is pathetic at best even at 17' old the ground and 10 miles closer to stations than my home. My question is whether I should replace the thin cheap feeling coax that came with the antenna or just try to but something better? Thanks.

after a a prior model channel master got corroded and quit in less than two years, i disconnected it and connected the cables to each other to bypass the booster box on the aerial mast for a while. i think with the channel master i only got about 40 channels on a good day (in tampa bay area). after watching this vid i got that RCA booster and i now have over 70 channels clear as a bell. i had no idea there were this many channels available.

Tyler I have a problem with my rv antenna (no signal). It worked fine and then one day it would not work at all. I confirmed that I had 12 volts from the power booster to the antenna. I replaced the power booster and it started working. I thought the problem was solved until I tried to use it again and it would not pickup a channel as before. So I replaced the antenna still didn’t work. I temporarily hooked up a regular residential style antenna on the roof bypassing the booster going straight into the tv and it worked fine. I replaced Omni directional antenna, replaced power booster, confirmed proper voltage and still nothing. I really need someone smarter than me to help locate the problem?

Tyler,. I have a Channel Master CM -2020 directional antenna mounted on a 30' telescoping pole. The pole is mounted about 30' from the entry point of the house, close to ground level. It then goes up to the attic and across the attic about about 25' to a two way distribution amplifier CM-3412 ultra mini distribution amp. Then output #1 about 20' to one TV, and output 2 about 30 feet to a second TV. About a month ago, the signal strength meter on the TV dropped all of the signal strengths from about 1/2 of the available channels from 3,4,or 5 bars down to one bar out of 5. The ones that were one bar, remained at one bar, or dropped off to zero bars. Should I try replacing the distribution amplifier, or the preamp? Or what do you recommend? Thanks for a great channel. Your videos have helped me get about 65 channels. I live about 1/2 way between San Antonio and Austin Texas in the Texas Hill Country. About 50 miles or more to most of the broadcast channels. The antenna is facing toward the S.A. towers, but receives pretty well from Austin off the back of the antenna. Thanks Tyler, great information!

Amplifiers usually don't do anything for indoor antennas. If some channels aren't picked up reliably, you will need to either adjust the antenna or replace it with a better model. Most indoor antennas do not have VHF elements needed for 6ABC in Philadelphia. You can find a list of recommended antennas or sign up for an antenna recommendation from me below: www.antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

I use the channel master titan 2 model CM-7777. It's been a very good performer, not exactly cheap as some but we'll worth the cost. I wouldn't advise using it though if you're close enough to TV stations. My guess is 30 miles or less away with little to no interference and you probably wouldn't need it, a lower powered one, or no amp at all and you'd probably be ok if your antenna is high enough in the air. I agree, you over power a signal and it's actually worse than no extra power at all. You'd think these manufacturers would put a db gain adjuster on these amps? I think some might have it?... I just don't recall any that does have one.

As in a lot of things "it depends" is a good answer. If the transmitters are nearby and scattered around you, the omni directional antenna is a good idea. If they are all in one direction, pointing a directional antenna at them is better. Generally, the higher you can mount the antenna the better.

No, preamps like the ones mentioned in this video can be powered through a power inserter. You would place the preamp up in the attic and then the power inserter gets connected after the long cable from the preamp in the attic to some place where there is power.
