Maybe Hawk was just able to tell right away that the old man in the helmet couldn't fight for shit, felt really bad for him, and was just letting the old man believe that he was putting up a fight before killing him. Like trying to fool the valkyries to let this old bastard go to Valhalla or some shit.

Ah yes Hawk the Slayer. A classic of modern cinema. I submit that these should no longer be called sword fights. They should be called Buffle Flaps. They only seem to hire Buffles and Dancers for TV so we should call them as we see them. A bunch of thugish buffles flapping their swords at each other to make cool sound effects. Cling.

Whether or not Westley and Inigo's duel is good kind of depends on your definition. If that's "Kill your opponent as quickly and efficiently as possible", as per a real fight to the death, then...it's kind of terrible. But if you recognize that the characters are both supposed to be masters, more concerned with testing each other than actually finishing the fight, then it becomes a lot better. So, a lot hinges on your viewpoint going in.
@chicoarraes8 жыл бұрын
sure, plus, there is a lot of moves that are shoehorned in just for cinematic effect, even a couple of spins, I guess. Of course, any actual fight to the death would have been over a lot quicker. But still, the technique is pretty excellent, considering both guys are just actors. They dont telegraph their moves and the foot work is pretty spot on. I dont think we can expect true realism in any Hollywood fight, but we should expect something believable and well polished, which is the point this channel is trying to make, I think. And something believable in a movie such as The Princess Bride, could be actually more stylized than most things, considering its a fantasy for kids or young adults. But the choreography ends up being more grounded than a lot of stuff in Game of Thrones, for example.

Ah Hawk the Slayer, the movie where the elf shoots the same arrow over and over again. The film where every single fight has a lot of smoke in the background to hide the fact that they're blatantly recycling footage from earlier fights in virtually every group fight scene. I remember it well (although well isn't possibly the best way to describe it). It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on the sword fighting in Ladyhawke in which apparently one handed swords are supposed to be sued two handed, crossbows are a melee weapon (as are crossbow bolts you just ripped out your own gut) and two handed swords are designed exclusively for throwing at people and things. Yeah....... That craziness aside it was the closest to gritty brawling that we got in a fantasy film from Conan 'til the Lord of the Rings trilogy so it does stand out on that front.
@raphaelperry81598 жыл бұрын
From what I can remember I think the two characters fighting are brothers and the hero really doesn't want to kill the villain. It's a pity he doesn't look reluctant throughout the fight, just wooden and emotionless. The man standing and watching is, I believe, letting them get on with their personal feud out of (wait for it) .... respect for the hero's skill as a swordsman. Or something like that.
@KnightSquire8 жыл бұрын
Just found Ladyhawke the other day, and if I have a chance I'd love to make a video about it.

I want to ask a question. I want to write a book with at least semi-realistic swordmanship. Is there such a thing as a high guard with the sword held high and in front.
@galumir8 жыл бұрын
There is ox, that is rising your sword above the head with the point targeting your opponents head, so your blade is parallel to the ground (roughly). Something more aggressive would be "vom Tag" (German, literally from the day, I don't know any English translation for this), where you rise your sword directly above the head in a striking position for powerful downward cuts.
@galumir8 жыл бұрын
Also I would be very interested to read your writing :D
@axeltenveils68168 жыл бұрын
+GandogarFS For a better context imagine a guy 20 centimetres taller than the average man at least, very fast and strong, used to either over power through brute strength the defence of his opponents or slapping away their weapons. (That is portrayed as a bit of a bad habit. Also it will be fantasy, so sometimes there will be stupid instances in the fights. Like throwing a sword, in a moment of madness against an opponent with a magic at our and a terrible explosion happening because of the enchantment on both armour and sword destroying each other. I hope to get it published sometime.)
@connorjaneu30218 жыл бұрын
Ochs, or Ox guard. The sword is held slightly above the head with the hilt near the head and the blade point outward toward your opponent.
@galumir8 жыл бұрын
+Axel Tenveils against very powerful blows a hanging guard would be more recommended, just take the image that Connor describes and imagine the sword point being dropped so it is more on a 40 degrees angle in front of you. By that you can try to evade hard parrys that could occur with ox against a speedy brute you described. For some more visual reference I would recommend The Swords Path channel, he shows of the various guards very well ;-)

The Hexer movie, which is actually a chopped up Wiedzmin (Witcher) series, is bad. Witcher series in itself is not bad at all. I actually found it more enjoyable then The Legend of the Seeker series, not to mention the latest Shannara series. It's mostly getting flak from fans who read the Witcher books prior to watching the series, because it changed certain things in the overall story. I think, it is best to watch episodes based on the Witcher short stories. IMO they are really good. Word of warning - don't expect Game of Thrones quality. If you're up to it, review the fight scene from the Witcher series I linked in my previous comment. In the end, if you ever make up your mind about watching the Witcher series start from episode 4. Episodes 4-9 are not that much interconnected, they can be watched individually with no problem.
@kamilszadkowski88648 жыл бұрын
+KnightSquire Never I repeat NEVER watch that shit. It's a complete abomination. No only the acting is horrible but also movie wasn't really based upon books, it was rather loose adaptation of the old comic series. It's better wait for new Witcher movie, it'll come out in 2017.
