My friend, I'm a 72 year old 1%er. I hung up my colors a long time ago. In my older years I have taken up the hobby of building motorized bicycles and my current project is an in tank frame, shocks forward and back, with an 80cc ported racing motor and a 21mm pwk carb and have been chasing down tutorials left and right and as of date I have found this video to be one of the best. Very comprehensive, to the point, and quite informative. Thank you for your time and effort. Outlaw Dog

Cameron....if you have trouble hearing the cutting out on the needle in the mid-range, try dragging the rear brake slightly or heading it up an incline. That will bring out the burbling in mid-range richness. Really a super video....best I've seen on jetting.

Hey Cameron. I have been working on and riding Dirtbikes almost 37 years. You by far have one of the best positive attitudes around. Your teachings on jetting throughout the video is spot on. Lots of people.do not know the correct way to jet amd blow top ends left n right. It truly is more than just replacing pilot n main. The needle is extremely important along with the air screw verse knowing when you need to up size or down size the Pilot. Also worn slide and other small air leaks go without being recognized as a possibility of cause. BBBRRRRRAAAAAAPPPPPPP!! BRAPPP

Thank You Cameron, What A Good Video. I Have Been A Motor Mechanic From 1993. & In 1995 Me & My Friend That Learned Me Motor Mechanic Bought Us Each A Yamaha DT175, 2 Stroke, 6volt Battery, Road Bikes On Higher Purchase. He Learned Me A Lot On Carburettors & How To Always Strip It In A Magnetic Bowl. Especially For Ball Bearings & Small Springs, Clips, Linkages, Screws Etc. & Showed Me How To Look For 1st Stage Main Jet & 2nd Stage Main Jet. & Also To Write The Sizes Down, As You Are Stripping. Like The 1st & 2nd Stage Air Jets & Imulsion Tubes, Idling Jets, Pump Jet, Especially To Keep The 1st Stage Imulsion Tube With The 1st Stage Air Jet, & The 2nd Stage Imulsion Tube With The 2nd Stage Air Jet. Because The 1 Imulsion Tube, Has Got A Bit More Holes Than The Other 1. I Used To Strip The Carburettor To Pieces, When We Used To Change The Carburettor Kit. & Cleaned Everything With Petrol, Thinners Mixed & With A Brush, Carb Cleaner To Clean Out The Channels Where The Jets Screws On & To Clean The Jets. & After That Took Air & Blew It Out Nicely So That Nothing Is Blocked. Normally The Carburettor Kit Came With Smaller Main Jets & Air Jets, Pump Jet, Idling Jets, Needle & Seed, Air Mixture Screw, Ball Bearings, Clips, Bottom Base Foot Gasket Between The Carb & The Foot Base, Top Bowl Gasket, O'Rings. Some Carbs Had Diaphragms To Open The 2nd Stage Butterfly On The Foot Base, That Comes With In The Kits. I Used To Lubricate The Linkages For The 1st & 2nd Stage Butterflies To Move More Freely. & All The Other Moving Parts As Well. You Had A Carb Spacer Between The Intake Manifold & Carburettor With 2 Gaskets Top & Bottom. I Always Used To Put 3 Screws To Hold The Top Bowl Cover. Fitted The Carb. Then When Starting The Vehicle, Let It Run For A Minute Or 2. Switch It Off & Took The Bowl Cover Off & Checked If There Is To Little Fuel In The Float Bowl, Or To Much That Can Flood It. Many Mechanic's Make That Mistake By Not Checking The Float Adjustment. & Then It Also Runs To Rich, If To Much Fuel. After That I Did The Adjustments & Put The Top Float Cover On & All The Screws & Hook Up All The Springs In Its Position. Now Days Everything Is Fuel Injection. Some Carbs Had A Run On Valve(Or Electric Idling) & Still A Idling Adjustment Screw. Others Just A Idling Screw. Then You Used To Get Manual Chokes Or Electric Chokes With A Bi-Metsl Spring That Heats Up & Opens The Choke Completely. & That Also Gets Adjusted The Right Tension & When Starting The Vehicle There Is A Choke Adjustment Screw, Near The Idling Screw, & While The Engine Is Still Cold, I Adjust The Choke To Run On 1100 Rpm. The Choke Opened In Stages On The Choke Link. As The Vehicle Heated Up, The Choke Opened More & The Idling Climbed, & I Then Adjusted The Rpm Right Adjustment. I Then Let The Vehicle Idled & The Co2 Machine Heating Up. I Revved The Vehicle Up To 3000 Rpm & Kept It There, So That The Vehicle Heats Up Quicker & Till The Electric Fan Kicked In. Then I Revved The Vehicle A Few Times Hard To Get The Water Out Of The Exhaust System. I Then Inserted The Co2 Tester Machine's Pipe Deep Enough Into The Tail Piece, & Then See If It Was Running To Rich Or To Lean. & Then Did My Adjustments, Till It Was On The Right Percentage, Wich Was Normally Between 1.5% To 2.0% Depending On The Condition Of The Carb & The Mileage On The Vehicle. I Then Took The Vehicle For A Good Ride & Came Back & Adjusted The Idling Right, While The Vehicle Was Hot, With The Lights Switched On & On Brights.Then Revved The Vehicle Up To 3000 Rpm, The Co2 Percentage Used To Go Up & Then It Comes Down To Lean Out. Then I Left The Vehicle To Idle & To See If It Is Still On The Right Percentage. Switched The Vehicle Off, Took The Spark Plugs Out To See If The Mixture Is Right. Believe Me, I Have Done Tons Of Different Carburettors & You Have To Know What You Doing. I Used To Look Up All The Jet Sizes & The 1's That Came In The Kit, Made The Vehicle Perform Much Better & Lighter On Fuel. I Was A Carburettor Specialist. Spares Shops Used To Sent Me Customers, That I Couldn't Keep Up. As Long As The Car Was Serviced & The Timing Was Right, Then The Adjustments On The Carb Is Easy. Just As You Explained In The Video What To Check & How To Adjust, I Explained What I Did. For Some It Will Sound A Mouth Full.

Excellent video and masterful instruction. There have been a couple other KZbin videos trying to explain carb jetting. But just when they finish telling what the jet or needle looks like or how it can be removed, they stop. That extra effort you made to give examples and explain why each does what they do and how both correct and incorrect jets and settings will act puts this video to the top. Thank You!!

IDLE: If you turn up the idle speed to a "fast idle" and if you have the idle "air" screw out, say, three turns (just to get set up) then you can begin turning the air screw in until you hear the idle noticeably slow - the turn out the air screw back out 1/4 turn. Return idle speed to a normal speed and you are all set.

Good video. Couple of things to add, some comment refer to AF ratio of 14.7:1 That is the AF ratio that will hold and engine at a constant RPM, to accelerate requires a richer mixture. 2 strokes don't run at that AF ratio anyway, they require an even richer mixture at constant RPM to help cooling of the piston and lubrication, if you set a 2 stroke to same as a 4 stroke using an AF gauge or Lambda sensor you'll seize it in a heart beat. Also the idle mixture screw, there are 2 types, the one Cameron is adjusting is an air idle screw and screwing it in is richer, the other usually under the throat is a fuel idle screw that screws out for richer, more common on 4 strokes though. Both are tuned using the same principle he describes. If you need to run other than centre needle clip position it is indicating you need to change the nozzle size and or slide cutaway. In general jetting always set the Main jet first and work your way down to needle and then idle, a rich MJ will cause some over run of fuel and effect lower end jetting on a quick back off and re acceleration at corners.
@sidecarbod1441
@sidecarbod1441 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. people bang on about 14.7:1 as being a magical ratio, it has no place in any engine! It is just the ratio that you could burn a fairly standard petrol (gas) in a chemistry lab and have no free oxygen left or no unburnt petrol. Even in a 4 stroke you can run the ratio leaner than 14.7 under cruise conditions and you would run richer than this when the engine is under load. 12.8-13:1 being about right for WOT condition at high RPM. I doubt that a 2 stroke would ever want to run leaner than 13:1 under any condition.

Its an 07 CR -The guys at Lectron are way cool, they will tune your carb real close to the specs required for your bike and answer all your questions in detail, Go to their website and go to offroad, click on Cr250 and get the Metering rod adjustment tool kit for the extra $17, I couldnt get enough play on my throttle with the metering rod cap it came with, couldnt get my bike to idle correctly so they sent me a low profile cap that worked out perfect, the carb is so easy to tune, turn the metering rod to the left to lean it out and right to richen, I did mine a 1/4 turn at a time and just looked at my spark plug to get it perfectly where i wanted it,.there are plenty of how to videos from lectron on tuning. I think this carb should come factory on all bikes!

Very informative video, I wish this was out when I got my first two stroke. One thing I didn't hear before making jetting changes is along with having a new plug and clean air filter I to check the intake boot for cracks, especially in older bikes and also ensure the clamps are tight before you do a preliminary test. I also have to say the Lectron is awesome. I got tired of messing with jetting because of the extreme elevation and temp changes I ride in. This this is awesome, I only made a small initial adjustment when I got it last summer and have ridden it through the winter and from 3000 ft to over 10000 feet with no adjustment and no sponge. Thanks for the video, I'm sure that took alot of effort to make.

My 2000 YZ 125 fouled a lot of plugs when new. After the motor got broken in, less so. Going 1 heat range hotter on the spark plug helped with the fouling issue as well, as does making sure you don't add too much oil to the foam air filter (which can choke air supply).

The lectron was hands down the best mod we ever did to the Ktm 300 better than porting or milling the head. It made the bike run soo good felt like it was getting perfect fueling everywhere in the throttle range.
